  • Salisbury, Wiltshire: Archaeology and History (Notes for Visitors, Prepared by the Royal Archaeological Institute, 2017)
Salisbury, Wiltshire: archaeology and history (notes for visitors, prepared by the Royal Archaeological institute, 2017) New Salisbury is the successor to Old Sarum (see separate on-line entry), resulting from the relocation of the cathedral to the more spacious and quieter site by the River Avon. There are five parts in these notes: Part 1 is on the cathedral itself, Part 2 on the surrounding Close, Part 3 on the city, Part 4 on recent research and Part 5 on the water-meadows. Part 1: Salisbury Cathedral The laying-out of a new cathedral close in the bishop’s manor of Milford was probably undertaken in the later 1190s under Bishop Herbert Poore (1194-1217). A rectangular area, surrounded by a wall, was first created for the consecrated ground of the churchyard, to contain the cathedral, cloister, chapter-house and cemetery. Because of the chaos of King John’s reign, no work was started on the cathedral until a Papal licence was given to Bishop Richard Poore (1217-28) on 29th March, 1218. Work on laying out the plan of the vast new cathedral (c. 475 feet long) and the digging of its foundations down to the gravel bed 5 feet below the ground surface was almost certainly started immediately, and on 28th April 1220 five or more main foundation stones were laid, possibly those with consecration crosses (photograph: Tatton-Brown and Crook 2014, 39; a brass cross would have been in the inset, and the stone painted). Work then continued rapidly on the eastern chapels, and they were consecrated on 28th September 1225.

The album contains nearly 200 original photographs (numbered sequentially at the top), most of which were autographed by their subjects. The photo- graphs were collected by John Hay, an author and statesman who was Lin- coln's private secretary from 1860 to 1865. PREFACE To Abraham Lincoln, the Civil War was essentially a people's contest over the maintenance of a government dedi- cated to the elevation of man and the right of every citizen to an unfettered start in the race of life. President Lincoln believed that most Americans understood this, for he liked to boast that while large numbers of Army and Navy officers had resigned their commissions to take up arms against the government, not one common soldier or sailor was known to have deserted his post to fight for the Confederacy.

It contains the Marriage Registers of thirteen parishes, besides additional Marriages at Castleacre for the seven- teenth century, taken from the Bishop's Transcripts. The eighteenth century Registers of Castleacre were printed in the first volume of this Series. It will be noticed that the Registers of several parishes are brought down to 1837 instead of 1812 and the Editors hope in the future volumes of the Norfolk Series to print all the Registers down to 1837, which, being the date when Civil Registration began, seems a more appropriate and convenient stopping place than 18 12. It has not been thought needful to print the entries verbatim. They are reduced to a common form, and the following contractions have been freely used : w.=widower or widow. p.=of the parish of. co.=in the county of.

  • Elegit Domum Sibi Placabilem: Choice and the Twelfth-Century
ELEGIT DOMUM SIBI PLACABILEM: CHOICE AND THE TWELFTH-CENTURY RELIGIOUS WOMAN A DISSERTATION IN History And English Presented to the Faculty of the University of Missouri-Kansas City in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY by LINDA DOROTHY BROWN B.A., Southern Methodist University, 1985 M.A., University of Kent at Canterbury, 1988 Kansas City, Missouri 2015 © 2015 LINDA DOROTHY BROWN ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ELEGIT DOMUM SIBI PLACABILEM: CHOICE AND THE TWELFTH-CENTURY RELIGIOUS WOMAN Linda Dorothy Brown, Candidate for the Doctor of Philosophy University of Missouri-Kansas City, 2015 ABSTRACT This dissertation probes medieval sources to identify how and why women made transformative choices in their own lives and analyzes the consequences of those choices. The major case study investigates the life of Marie of Blois-Boulogne, a twelfth-century abbess, countess, wife, and mother. Marie experienced change and tragedy, provoking the need to make choices with religious and political ramifications. As such, her story enables us to examine decision-making in the context of controversy on the one hand and family obligations and personal ambition on the other. Relevant themes—such a child oblation, the holy veil and enclosure, legal and illegal marriage—frame Marie and create a microhistory of the world that she inhabited. Other historical women and literary characters from the eleventh through thirteenth centuries flesh out more of the discussion. These case studies and presentations fit into three body chapters that examine the power exercised by parents, complications of the enclosure, and the end of marital relationships. Medieval chronicle accounts, charters, monastic cartularies, seals, and letters, provide the material evidence for this study.

  • Church Records
CHURCH RECORDS WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA CONFERENCE OF THE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH COMPILED AND EDITED BY REV. NORMAN CARLYSLE YOUNG, M.Div.; M.Ed. AND NAOMI KATHLEEN IVEY HORNER UPDATED June 30, 2021 AN HISTORICAL RECORDS VOLUME PUBLISHED UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE ARCHIVES & HISTORY MINISTRY TEAM Printed by McElvany & Company Printing and Publishing 1 Copyright © 2021 by The Western Pennsylvania Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church All Rights Reserved 2 PREFACE The Historical Volume Church Records Western Pennsylvania Conference of The United Methodist Church was last printed in 2003. In order to keep the Church Records current, Janet & Norman C. Young were retained to update the more recent appointments and make necessary corrections as new information became available. Since their death, Naomi Horner has graciously volunteered to continue updating the volume. New information comes from the readers making corrections and suggestions. New information also comes from Naomi’s continued research on the companion volume Pastoral Records. The Western Pennsylvania Commission on Archives & History decided to make this revision and update available on these webpages www.wpaumc.org0H so that the most current information remains accessible and for corrections to continue to refine the document. This volume has had long history of Revision. Described by Herbert E. Boyd in his 1957 volume on the Erie Methodist Preface as a “compendium…intended primarily as an administrative tool.” He then credits forerunners back to 1898. At that time, this primarily contained Pastoral Records. Grafton T. Reynolds edited for the Pittsburgh Methodist Episcopal Church a similar volume through 1927. W. Guy Smeltzer divided his 1969 revision between chapters on Pastoral Records and Church Records.
