About the Project Minnesota Power and Dairyland Power Cooperative are proposing to build a 525-550 megawatt natural gas generation facility in Superior, Wisconsin, called the Nemadji Trail Energy Center. This center will use flexible and efficient natural gas to enable the addition of more renewable energy resources such as wind and solar, and to deliver affordable and reliable power to consumers in the region. The Facility This project will be a combined-cycle gas generation facility that burns natural gas in a combustion turbine. 2 HOW IT WORKS Natural Gas Fuel Supply Natural gas is burned to produce high-pressure, 1 high-temperature gas that spins a turbine. 1 Steam Turbine Equipment in this building captures waste heat to Gas Turbine 2 create steam that spins a second turbine. Energy from the turbines flows to a transformer 3 and continues through the electric grid to power Transformer homes and businesses. 3 Nemadji Trail Energy Center Facility Location The proposed project is located in an industrial area and has access to existing electrical and natural gas infrastructure. The project will require these additional components: Approximately seven-mile natural gas pipeline using existing right-of-way 2 N 42nd St Approximately four-mile, 345kV transmission line parallel to existing right-of-way Z Approximately 10-acre substation associated with the transmission line Legend The Wisconsin permitting process requires two Preferred Facility Site proposed alternatives; however, only one facility site, Alternate Facility Site transmission line route, and substation location are Existing Pipeline Right-of-Way preferred by Minnesota Power and Dairyland Power - Preferred Transmission Route & Substation C as shown on the map. Alternate Transmission Route & Substation Project Benefits Schedule Public participation/comment period. Supports customer load Regulatory Permit Supports renewable energy resources 2018-2019 Applications Development & Submittal Reduces carbon emissions Regulatory 2019-2020 Review & Largest private investment in Douglas County Approval Over $1 billion in regional economic benefit over 20 years Engineering & 2020 Construction Creates 260 jobs during peak construction and up to 25 full-time permanent jobs Provides approximately $1 million in annual, local tax benefit 2025 Operation Reach out, we’re here. Energy Resource Components Agreements with some of our customers to interrupt service at times of peak load—also used to balance resources and maintain reliability. Energy Efficiency Demand Response Market Energy Natural gas and purchases from energy markets are used to fill in Natural Gas the gaps between the peaks and valleys of variable wind and solar power. Natural gas provides reliable power while buffering the volatility of energy market prices. Intermittent Renewables Our traditional coal-fired units provide consistent, Base Load Resources dependable baseload power.
