À cette époque, Pánfilo de Narváez (1528) puis Hernando de Soto (1539) défilent dans les environs, mais ne s’y installent pas, rebutés par l’accueil « inhospitalier » des populations autochtones présentes et la rudesse d’un territoire alors infesté de moustiques voraces. Aussi faudra-t-il attendre trois siècles avant que ne débute vraiment la colonisation des environs. À la fin du XIXe siècle, Henry Bradley Plant devient pour la côte ouest de la Floride ce qu’Henry Flagler est pour la côte est. Il implante alors une voie ferroviaire qui contribue de manière décisive au développement de la région. Témoin des réussites spectaculaires de son rival sur la côte Atlantique, Plant, convaincu que la côte du golfe du Mexique possède un intérêt récréatif et un climat tout aussi favorable, lance son projet de chemin de fer. Celui-ci atteint Tampa en 1884, où sera construit le somptueux Tampa Bay Hotel en 1891. Puis, au début du XXe siècle, Plant inaugure son Belleview Hotel à Clearwater. Le tourisme a donc un impact majeur sur le développement de Tampa, auparavant habité seulement par une poignée de colons. Parallèlement toutefois, la ville s’industrialise rapi- dement, notamment avec l’arrivée de Vicente Martínez Ybor, exilé cubain qui déplace sa vaste usine de tabac de Key West à Tampa en 1886, prélude à la venue d’une centaine d’autres fabriques de cigares dans le quartier qui sera baptisé « Ybor City » en son honneur. Aujourd’hui, les villes de Tampa et de St. Petersburg, qui se font face de chaque côté de l’immense baie de Tampa, sont indissociables et forment ensemble la deuxième agglomé- ration métropolitaine en importance de la Floride. Tampa, avec ses gratte-ciel, est la cité des affaires, alors que St. Petersburg, grâce à ses musées remarquables, est la ville des arts et de la culture. Mais il faut bien l’admettre, c’est d’abord pour les larges et sablonneuses plages des îles-barrières qui longent la côte, entre St. Pete Beach et Clearwater, que les visiteurs se pressent chaque année en si grand nombre dans la région. DICAS GERAIS DO BUSCH GARDENS Se programe Como eu falei antes, o Busch Gardens fica em Tampa então não deixe de sair com bastante antecedência do seu hotel se quiser chegar lá para as primeiras horas do parque aberto (quando está tudo mais vazio e você consegue aproveitar as atrações praticamente sem fila). Vá por partes O Busch Gardens é um parque extremamente grande e cortado por uma enorme Savana Africana, chamada Serengeti Plain, o que deixa as atrações um pouco afastadas entre si. Assim, é aconselhável que esse parque seja realizado por blocos, esgotando-se cada uma das áreas temáticas do parque, uma por vez. Aproveite as opções de transporte Use e abuse do Skyride (uma espécie de teleférico) e do trenzinho (chamado Serengeti Railway), que cortam o parque, para locomoção. Além de serem ótimas oportunidades para visualização dos animais e do belo visual do parque, ainda poupa um pouco suas pernas. Pode parecer bobagem, mas acredite: poupar um pouquinho que seja suas pernas em uma viagem à Orlando, é uma enorme vantagem. O Skyride possui estações no Egito, bem pertinho da entrada da Cheetah Hunt e em Stanleyville, bem na metade do caminho entre a Kumba e a Sheikra.

Our train - the one our family boarded in the midst of a Nairobian desert - is snaking dangerously close to some fierce and hungry- looking lions. But all is well. My three-year-old daughter is delighted by the pink of the very pink flamingos. And somehow the sight of giraffes ripping leaves off trees strikes my seven-year-old son as extremely funny. No, we're not in Africa. We're in Florida, at Busch Gardens. Or, as my kids call it, Beach Gardens. We're 10 in total, with kids ranging in age from three to 15 - an excellent test of the family fun at Tampa Bay's African- themed attraction. Without hesitation, the teenaged boys and men of our group head directly for the coaster.
