EVEN BEFORE WE WELCOME YOU TO THE FIRST NEWSLETTER OF THE YEAR WE NEED TO CLEAR UP SOME MISINFORMATION WHICH WAS CIRCULATING OVER THE CHRISTMAS PERIOD.

We refute, in the strongest possible terms, the presumptuous claims made on commercial television that Santa got through all his deliveries so quickly because he “bought a Jeep” !!!

Feedback from both the north pole and our agents at Mawson overwhelmingly endorsed the new distribution system devised by us and outlined in the last newsletter. Santa has provided indisputable advice that the new system provided far greater efficiency in timely delivery and markedly reduced stress levels as the major outcomes.

He was particularly impressed with the shortened stages saying it was a real bonus being able to freshen up with a wee nip of something warming while the fresh fleet of reindeer were being harnessed. He said for the first time ever he was able to share a nightcap with Mrs Claus just after 1a.m. and was exuberant in his thanks for our gift of Mt Carmel and Muscadelle but confirmed that was still his firm favourite.

VINTAGE 2015 BEGINS he sun’s shining, the crickets are singing and as you can see the first Muscat grapes of the season look pretty darn good and the air is full of heady aromas that have been wowing generations of drinkers since the the ancient Greeks and Romans enjoyed a challice or two.

The green ones are not unripe, they are commonly referred to as White Muscat and are seen here with the bluey/purply along with the most famous of all, the Muscat à Petits Grains grapes grown here at Rosewood, the Brown Muscat.

We were grateful for a relatively mild January then some soaking rain early in the New Year which of course meant the crew had to be all the more vigilant when we experienced a string of high humidity days… ideal conditions for the spread of disease in the vines.

Visitors keep commenting on how lush and green the area looks at the moment as all the vegetation, particularly the weeds, have taken off. It will start to dry off now that some hotter days are forecast. We’ll have to see if a national radio commentator is right, when he said that the warmer temperatures will stay with us well into April.

“Alcohol consumption is cyclical by nature. Believe it or not, we tend to drink what our grandparents drank, not what our parents drank.” Spiros Malandrakis FEMME FATALE OF GRAPE VARIETIES BACK IN THE HEADLINES

You’d think it would be very difficult to convince a band of DNA fingerprinting established that a member of the Pinot volunteers to not only contribute to the cost of buying an family (probably ) got together with Gouais abandoned vineyard but also carry out restoration work on to give us and the researchers believe the more than two dozen stone walled terraces wouldn’t you? Romans brought the variety into France from Croatia 2,000 years ago. Thanks to the passion and persistence of Grapevine Geneticist José Vouillamoz and his helpers, more We were understandably excited when we first heard of the information will become available as they explore these amazing heritage of this ancient variety from researchers at ancient vines. February 2015 edition Wine & Spirits magazine (USA) 96 pts Chambers Rosewood Rare Muscat. S tephen Chambers is the sixth generation of the family to tend vineyards in Rutherglen, as well as their ‐like cellar that includes wines dating back more than 100 years. His Rare Muscat focuses on those oldest lots, an ebony, glass‐coating liquid that seems to have captured the sun. What’s extraordinary about this wine is how something so dark can be so vibrant, how flavors of figs, dates and all‐spice can feel fresh. One taster described it in parallel to “really good dark chocolate that has a fruitiness to it.” Sophisticated and powerful, this is a glorious wine. 95 pts Chambers Rosewood Rare Muscadelle Heady ginger scents drive an arrow of acidity through this remarkably rich wine. It tastes of plumped prunes and rose petals, carried along on a silken texture, a gentle sensation that lasts for minutes after a sip. Complex and beautifully balanced, this reveals layers of time, scent memories from a century in the cellar. 92 pts Chambers Rosewood Grand Muscat Stephen Chambers blends this wine from his family’s collection of stocks reaching back more than 100 years. It’s luscious and ripe, with scents of candied orange rind and baking spices. The fruit feels succulent, the texture broad and rich. Though the wine is sweet, it’s balanced by refreshing acidity, making it compellingly drinkable long into the evening.

TODAY’S STOCK MARKET REPORT

Helium was up, feathers were down. Paper was stationery. Fluorescent tubing was dimmed in light trading. Knives were up sharply. Cows steered into a bull market. Pencils lost a few points. Hiking equipment was trailing....Elevators rose, while escalators continued their slow decline. Weights were up in heavy trading. Light switches were off. Mining equipment hit rock bottom. Diapers remain unchanged. Shipping lines stayed at an even keel. The market for raisins dried up. Coca Cola fizzled. Caterpillar stock inched up a bit. Sun peaked at midday. Balloon prices were inflated and batteries exploded in an attempt to recharge the market... A RARE TREAT

Ever since Grady Greene and his lovely wife Audrey Ann visited us in early 2002 and were lucky enough to meet Rosewood’s 5th generation Bill, they have been ardent fans of our fortified wines and, I might add, our newsletters.

However, when they wished to purchase another bottle of the “ unforgettable” Rare Muscat they’d taken home with them to North Florida, they ran into a few roadblocks. Grady had been able to enjoy some Chambers Muscadelle mid-Atlantic while on a Delta flight after a visit to Spain but it was that special elixir for sipping on special occasions, for which he was yearning.

Now, as you can see in this photograph our wonderful American distributors, Old Bridge Cellars, have rectified the situation and all is as it should be down on the Suwannee River. Different spelling but yes, this is the same river as in the song Way Down on the Swanee River.

YOU KNOW YOU’RE AUSTRALIAN WHEN:

• You believe that stubbies can either be drunk or worn. • You pronounce Melbourne as ‘Mel-bin’. • You believe that the letter ‘I’ in Australia is optional, and it’s perfectly reasonable to call it ‘Straya’. • You think ‘Woolloomooloo’ is a perfectly reasonable name for a place. • You’re secretly proud of our killer wildlife. • You believe it makes perfect sense for a country to have a $1 coin that’s twice as big as a $2 coin. • You understand that ‘Wagga Wagga’ can be abbreviated to ‘Wagga’ but ‘Woy Woy’ cannot be just ‘Woy’. • Beetroot with your hamburger … of course! • You wear ugg boots outside the house. • You believe that the more you shorten someone’s name, the more you like them. • You understand that ‘excuse me’ can sound rude, but ‘scuse me’ is always polite. • You know what it’s like to swallow a fly, on occasion via your nose. • You know how to abbreviate every word, all of which usually end in ‘o’ : arvo, convo, garbo, lezzo, metho, milko, muso, servo, smoko, rego, speedo, righto, etc. • You know there is a universal place called ‘Woop Woop’ located in the middle of nowhere, no matter where you actually are! • And you can understand all of this, have a giggle and tell all your friends I Iove Australia!!!

“No drug, not even alcohol, causes the fundamental ills of society. If we’re looking for the source of our troubles, we shouldn’t test people for drugs,we should test them for stupidity, ignorance, greed, and love of power.” P J O’Rourke AS BIG AS TEXAS

As you will no doubt understand, we rarely engage in self-promotion but we just had to share some exciting news!

One of America’s oldest performing arts organisations, The Houston Symphony, will host a very prestigious donor dinner and Chambers Rutherglen Muscat has been selected to accompany the dessert course.

About 500 people will enjoy the menu designed by chef extraordinaire Wolfgang Puck and presented by Houston’s preeminent caterers, Jackson and Company. A big vote of thanks to Gina and Dr Devinder Bhatia as well as John and Lindy Rydman of Spec’s Wines, Spirits & Finer Foods as they are the ones who put the wine selection together.

The orchestra, which was founded in 1913, enjoys a wonderful history of philanthropic work and will use the proceeds from the evening, to be held on Friday March 13, 2015, to raise funds to support their education and community engagement activities which reach 160,000 people, including 87,000 children annually.

It’s hard to say which of the family members it was Henri Malakunas encountered when he visited our cellar door in the late 1960s on a tour organised by his wife’s netball team but the gentleman, (probably Bill) made quite an impression.

After tasting a couple of wines siphoned out of barrels with a plastic hose Henri, who describes himself as an almost teetotaller, was convinced enough to buy a 1967 Port accompanied by some free advice … “ put it down for some years , it’s going to be good “ .

Something went awry with his plans to open the bottle on his first child’s 21st birthday because it was on Melanie Malakunas’s 43rd birthday on the 9th September last year that he finally opened the bottle...Henry reported his aged investment was “MAGNIFICENT” so there’ll be no stopping him now he’s planning another buying trip!

“One wine rule that doesn’t apply in Australia is should be served at room temperature — red wines should only be served at 18-20C.” Winemaker Chris Hatcher
