TEAM NOTES:

THE CROSBY FACTOR Penguins captain Sidney Crosby has quietly put together an excellent 2020-21 campaign. Crosby enters tonight’s game tied for eighth in league scoring, but second among all East Division skaters (BOS – Brad Marchand, 48) with 47 points (16G-31A) in 40 games. The captain has more multi point games this season (14) than games without a point (12).

Crosby’s defensive numbers have been equally as impressive as his offensive output. He enters tonight’s game:

• With the third-most faceoff wins in the NHL (500)

• Ranked sixth in the NHL with a win percentage of 58.0% on defensive zone faceoffs (min. 100 DFO)

• With the second-most (tied) takeaways in the league (39)

• With the second-most blocked shots (22) among Pittsburgh forwards

Crosby has 18 points (5G-13A) over his last 11 games, helping Pittsburgh to an 8-2-1 record during that span.

41 DOWN, 15 TO GO Friday night was Pittsburgh’s 41st game of the season, which in a normal year would mark the halfway point in the season. This season, the Penguins have compiled a 26-13-2 record and 54 points, good for the eighth-most points (tied) in the NHL. Pittsburgh’s 54 points are the 10th-most points it has accumulated through 41 games in franchise history, while the 26 wins are tied for fifth most.

LOCK IT DOWN The Penguins have been one of the league’s best third-period teams this season. Pittsburgh is 16-1-0 when leading after two periods of play, and big reason for that has been their ability to light the lamp while also putting forth a solid defensive effort to close out games. The team’s 47 third-period goals for are tied for third-most in the league (Nashville and Vegas, 49), while they’ve also allowed the seventh-fewest (tied) goals against (35). The Penguins plus-12 third-period goal differential is tied for fifth in the NHL.

Only Arizona’s Phil Kessel (10) has more goals in the third period this season than Jake Guentzel (9).

PROSPEROUS POWER PLAY The Penguins delivered on the power play yet again in Friday’s win, scoring two goals on the man advantage. Pittsburgh has tallied a power-play goal in four straight games (5 PPG) and seven of the last eight games (10 PPG) dating back to March 25.

Since March 25, the Penguins have the highest power-play percentage (38.5%) in the league and are tied for the most power-play goals (10):

Team PPG PP % Pittsburgh 10 38.5% Dallas 7 36.4% Minnesota 9 34.6% NY Rangers 10 34.5% Edmonton 5 25.0%

MCCAN’T STOP WON’T STOP Jared McCann scored another power-play goal on Friday night, giving him a team-leading, and career high, six on the season. Five of his six power- play goals have come over his last eight games (6G-3A total) and since March 25, McCann has the most man-advantage tallies in the league.

Player PPG Jared McCann 5 Mika Zibanejad 4 T.J. Oshie 3 3 Kirill Kaprizov 3

McCann’s two-point night (1G-1A) on Friday helped him eclipse the 20-point plateau for the fourth-straight season. His .71 points-per-game average this year is on pace to be the highest of his career.

OFFENSIVE DEFENSEMAN Defenseman Kris Letang continues to be an offensive factor for the Penguins as he registered his third multi-point effort (2A) in as many games, helping Pittsburgh to a 6-4 win on Friday night. It marked Letang’s 11th multi-point effort of the season, the most in the NHL among defensemen:

Player Multi-Point Games Kris Letang 11 Tyson Barrie 10 Victor Hedman 10 Adam Fox 9 John Carlson 9

Letang has 11 points (1G-10A) over his last eight games dating back to March 25th. During that span, he has the second-most points in the league among defensemen behind Adam Fox (16). He is three points behind Fox (37) and Victor Hedman (37) for the NHL lead in points among defensemen.
