On the playing front we had a wonderful performance by our Under 17 team who were in the top two sides for most of the season but slipped at the business end of the season when they were missing a number of key players. To play finals cricket was a creditable effort and the players, parents and coaches should be congratulated. The efforts of our whole junior network was outstanding and again this year the performance has been outstanding. The Colts had an outstanding year and capped it off with a great premiership. Well done to all the boys involved and to the skipper Tim Monteleone. The only down side of the win was that the boys got to burn my much loved Five Finger “toe” shoes. The Third grade side played good cricket all season and capped it off by beating highly fancied opponents to win the grand final. A terrific effort by the whole team and a tribute to the strong leadership of the skipper Luke McShane. Our First Grade finished outside the finals but only by one game. A couple of disappointing days during the season cost us badly. The second grade started the season poorly but stormed home to make the finals. Adam Bolton did an excellent job throughout the season and should be congratulated. The Fourth Grade had a patchy season. They suffered from having to change captain during the season and the usual high player rotation. The number of young players blooded should hold us in good stead for next season. By the end of the season it was clear that we will have a couple of very significant changes for 2010/2011. Don Weir indicated that he would be moving on after eight seasons. He has been a great contributor to the Club and we wish him well in his future endeavours. Steve Glew has also indicated he will not be seeking the captaincy of the First Grade. Another extraordinary contributor to our Club. We still look forward to Steve’s continued contribution in a different role and still expecting lots of runs from him. These changes represent a significant challenge for the players and the Club as a whole. A new approach and new personnel will be required. It should be taken as an opportunity to establish a new chapter in a very proud Club history. Jim Ryan’s efforts in attracting and servicing second eleven cricket at Floreat Oval were again at a high level and appreciated both by the WACA and the Club. Thanks Jim. To all the other Committee members

Below are details of the Boys’ 1st XI Cricket 1938 to 1969. Complete teams’ names are available from 1949 onwards. Information regarding early photographs in this section is somewhat sketchy. As with the other sports featured in this archive, the number preceding the pupil name is the school registration number of that particular pupil. If the number does not appear then that is either because there is no surviving school report in school detailing that pupil’s activities or the activity is not recorded on their report. The only other information we have therefore is from the school magazine, Roesian. Words in italics are drawn directly from Roesian. We had a team composed mostly of hard hitters with a few cautious batsmen to steady them in a crisis. The matches were, therefore, all the more exciting and there were few drawn games. While the younger members of the team were inclined to be rather venturous, their enthusiasm augurs well for our success in the coming season.’ ‘The Old Boys’ played the School 1st XI at cricket on 23rd June 1938.

In the second half of the nineteenth century, driven by the public school ideology of muscular Christianity, participation in team sports, principally football and cricket, came to be viewed by social commentators as a central characteristic of the ideal English man. The ideology of muscular Christianity then spread throughout the rest of Britain and its Empire via schools and imperial institutions such as the army and civil service. By the end of the century the practice of sport was central to the conception of the manly imperial Briton. At the same time subjects of British rule began to participate in British sports in increasing numbers, leading to a public debate on their ability to embody imperial manliness.

Above, Dave at work preparing the Shore Road pitch for our Reserves’ 2nd day of their last game of the season, 1 April. Note the strong covering of grass remaining, and a couple of spare strips, despite us hosting an Auckland A match and a couple of social games during the season. The pitch was a credit to Dave who has worked tirelessly, not only on this block but also on the grass pitches at Orakei Domain and Thos.
