Of the total of 87 types, 5 holotypes and 12 isotypes are identified while 11 lectotypes, 52 isolectotypes, 1 neotype, and 6 isoneotypes are designated. Introduction Acoelorraphe is a monotypic genus of fan palms with clustered stems, and its sole species, A. wrightii (Griseb. & H. Wendl.) H. Wendl. ex Becc., occurs in seasonally wet or flooded conditions, often in brackish water in coastal swamps and marshes or in savanna thickets or pine forests, typically at low elevations, from southern Florida through the northern Bahamas and central and western Cuba (Fig. 1) to the Caribbean coasts of southern Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama (Dransfield et al. 2008, Henderson et al. 1995, Zona 1997), and Providencia Island of Colombia (Galeano and Bernal 2010). Leaf blades are typically green adaxially and green with a slightly glaucous bloom abaxially although a form with strikingly silvery gray leaf blades has recently been reported from western Cuba (Craft 2017). Dransfield et al. (2008) placed Acoelorraphe in the Trachycarpeae tribe of the subfamily Coryphoideae.

Wagner ABSTRACT TRACHYCARPEAE PALMS AS MODELS TO UNDERSTAND PATTERNS OF ISLAND BIOGEOGRAPHY AND DIVERSIFICATION Palms are iconic members of tropical flora and are representative of the vast diversity found in rain forests across the world. Outside of being fundamental for forest structure and function and for human well-being in many tropical countries, palms also emerge as models for evolutionary studies. Because of their long history, rich fossil record, and dispersal ability, palms have been suggested to track forest evolution and change through time. In this dissertation, I use various molecular and analytical techniques to show that palms are an excellent model for understanding patterns of biogeography and diversification in tropical forests. Results show that Miocene dispersal was a driving force in island diversification across the world from the Caribbean, to Southeast Asia, to Hawaii. Data also support that differential shifts in diversification are key to shaping diversity patterns on Southeast Asian islands and across Wallace's Line. At finer scales, results show the importance of hybridization in the diversification of island lineages. Our activities as an organization include tours of nurseries or notable yards to let members see which palms are being grown successfully in our region and how they can be used to enhance landscapes. The Fall Tour on October 17 took us to Plant Creations, Gary Wilkins, and To-Be Farms. Among the highlights was the rare chance to see a large Cuban Petticoat Palm in the late stages of the lengthy process of being root-pruned for relocation. We also have a long history of supporting worthy research and other palm-related activities. With respect to our 2015 theme, Palms of Madagascar, I’m reminded that the South Florida Palm Society had a role in driving research on those species. We made two significant donations toward the publication by Drs. John Dransfield and Natalie Uhl of their outstanding volume, Genera Palmarum: A Classification of Palms Based on the Work of Harold E. Moore, Jr. That study introduced a major reclassification of Malagasy species, a topic that had been of special interest to Dr.

En 193 1 se graduó de Licenciado en Medicina en la Universidad Santo Tomás de Aquino, hoy Autónoma de Santo Domingo, UASD. 2 Moscosoa 19, 2015 Desde muy temprana edad sintió afición por la naturaleza; ya en 1 936 su inclina- ción por la Botánica era manifiesta; esto quedó en evidencia en uno de los artículos periodísticos que frecuentemente publicaba el Dr. Arturo Grullón en el periódico La Información de Santiago, quién lo describió con estas palabras: Un futuro gran botánico en la República Dominicana, refiriéndose al Dr. Jiménez. En el año 1934 contrajo matrimonio con la distinguida dama Ana Julia Olavarrieta, con quien procreó dos hijos: José de Jesús, fallecido, y Julia Dolores.
