The Vocaloid Phenomenon of Vocal Synthesis and Sample Concatenation Cole Masaitis University of Mary Washington Department of Music Dr. Mark Snyder January 30, 2017 Masaitis, 1 Imagine a future where a singing voice synthesizer sang to you, instead of a real human. Instead of imagining that, what if I told you that this particular future has been around for quite some time? Vocaloid, or computer software that matches this exact description has been blowing up in Japan for over a decade, with other areas including the West being largely in the dark about it. In reality, Vocaloid has been slowly but surely seeping into pop-culture in other countries as well and was created all the way back in the early 2000’s. Vocaloid originated in the early 2000’s and was developed by a man named Hideki Kenmochi who some refer to as “the father” of the software, for a research project at Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, Spain. Following his time at university, Yamaha Corporation funded his research which allowed for the further development of his creation and since then, the software has evolved into the worldwide phenomenon called Vocaloid that exists today. Vocaloid employs sample concatenation or sequence that replicates the human voice, based on actual recordings of different individuals for each voicebank found in the Vocaloid editor programs. Originally, it was only capable of pronouncing vowels, and by the year 2003, the team released their product which was now able to sing simplistic words. Over the years the product went through several iterations before it reached the modern version of vocal synthesis it exemplifies today, in the form of Yamaha’s Vocaloid 4 software with more advanced phonetic, linguistic, and vocal than ever before. -

PRODUKSI FANS IDOLA VIRTUAL HATSUNE MIKU : STUDI DESKRIPTIF TERHADAP AKTIFITAS PRODUKSI KONTEN OLEH FANS HATSUNE MIKU Disusun oleh: Anandias Satrya Putra ABSTRACT This study focuses on the description of production activities conducted by Hatsune Miku fans, find out what the content is produced and why they do the production. This research takes the fans as the subject of research, the object of research is the production of contents conducted by fans, this research see the activities of Hatsune Miku’s fans. Fans who were chosen as informants are domiciled in Surabaya and have different special skills and are contributing to the community. This research was conducted by interviewing three informants and then collecting additional data from the internet. The significance of this research is that the activities of virtual idol fans have different activities and have different productions with the fans of conventional idols, and virtual idols is considered a very rare topic to be discussed. The method used in this study is an interview to perform work and activity analysis and by collecting additional observation data from the internet. This research focuses at the phenomenon by using pop culture and japanese pop culture, Japanese Idol and virtual Idola, augmented reality and fandom. The research concludes that fans's production can be seen from aspects such as music production, virtual concerts and others such as fan art, fanfic, and cosplay. They produces the content with various technical phases and they do so to fulfil their hobbies and also to seek personal satisfaction. Author Examining the Rise of Hatsune Miku: The First International Virtual Idol Linh K. Le Political Science, Anthropology Linh Le hopes to pursue a Abstract career as a diplomat and feels that his work on this research irtual idol Hatsune Miku represents a unique phenomenon in the twenty-first project has given him tremen- Vcentury. For fans, this virtual idol represents a new wave of entertainment and dous insight into facilitating engagement. Within academia, Miku represents an opportunity to explore new mod- collaborations between dif- els for global collaboration. With the proliferation of the Internet, society has had ferent cultures. He has also a glimpse of the power that comes from the combined forces of globalization and enjoyed the opportunity to social media such as Facebook and Twitter. However, in looking at those cases, what explore an area of Internet we have seen is how real life events facilitate actions in social media. On the other culture that he considers not hand, Hatsune Miku provides a case study for the exact opposite: how an event/ to have been widely known or persona created by social media inspires actions in real life. The goal of this paper researched. Outside of aca- is to look at the Hatsune Miku Phenomenon from the perspectives of the fans, the demia, Linh enjoys reading, media, the creators, etc., in order to understand how this virtual singer has inspired a playing basketball and talking new wave of creativity that is changing not only Japan but the entire world, especially to people on the Internet. in how we understand copyright and engagement. -

GILLIAN SMITH, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, USA Vocaodoru is a virtual reality rhythm game centered around two novel components. The gameplay of Vocaodoru is a never- before-seen pose-based gameplay system that uses a player’s measurements to adapt gameplay to their needs. Tied to the gameplay is a human-in-the-loop utility AI that controls a cinematographic camera to allow streamers to broadcast a more interesting, dynamic view of the player. We discuss our efforts to develop and connect these components and how we planto continue development after the conclusion of the WPI MQP. Prof. Daniela Moro Laureanda Alessia Cimini 857138 Anno Accademico 2017/2018 1 2 要旨 初音ミクは 2007 年 8 月にクリプトン・フューチャー・メディアが発売した合成音声 で DTM 用ソフトウェアの名称である。DTM とはデスクトップ・ミュージックの略 称でパソコンとバーチャル楽器などで作られた音楽である。 しかし、初音ミクはソフトウェアだけじゃなくて、インターネットのタレントのお かげで本物の歌い手になった。アイドルと同じように、初音ミクはコンサートを開 いて、ファンに褒められる。 この論文を書く前に「どうしてホログラムはそんなに感動させるか」と自分に聞い た。この問題を解決するために、「DTM がどのように変化してきたか」から始める のが必要である。 初めてのボカロイド「LEON」と「LOLA」が売された日、ボカロイドに興味はほと んどなかった。しかし、2007 年に何かが変わったから初音ミクの時代が始まった。 他のボカロイドに対して、初音ミクはなぜそんなに違うかと聞かれた。 世界中のクリエイターは初音ミクを使って、ニコニコ動画でオリジナル曲を投稿す る。その結果、ボーカル音源ソフトウェアはバーチャルアイドルになった。 本論文は初音ミクの成功の理由を説明して、初音ミクのライブの感動の正体を深め ることを目的とする。 第一章で DTM の発展を明らかにして合成音声の実験とボカロイドの発端を説明する。 3 第二章で初音ミクの成功を提示する。ニコニコ動画は初音ミクのクリエイターの 「遊び場」になった。そして、二次創作と同人文化を広げていく。ミクの成功の理 由を深めて、ネットの利用者の反応を説明する。 第三章で初音ミクに対する人々の認識を深める。観客はバーチャルアイドルになっ たボカロイドがどう見えるかどう思うかと提示する。アイドルになる方法を明らか にしてアイドルオタクとの絆を説明する。その背景で初音ミクの役割を提示する。 最後に、第四章でボカロイドオペラ「THE END」のテーマを提示する。初音ミクは 「THE END」の主人公が死んでしまうということを見つける。バーチャルキャラク ターのミクは「死亡」のことを全然思わなくて、「人生」の意味は何かと自分に聞 く。 「今死んでしまうということになるか」と聞くミクを通し、谷慶一郎の「THE END」はバーチャルキャラクターの「存在」を深めるオペラである。 本論文の目的は初音ミクの存在とバーチャルアイドルとして人々がそれをどのよう に認識しているかを明らかにする。どうしてミクは事実的に見えるかと解き明かし て、観客が音ミクに感動させられる理由を説明する。 4 INTRODUZIONE Il 31 agosto 2007 viene rilasciato un nuovo programma per il computer destinato a cambiare il concetto di musica, virtualità
