Di Pinatawad Sa Holdap WEDNESDAY MAY 20, 2009 PHILIPPINES “If a person made you smile and laugh for how many times already… for sure, that person can make you cry real tears, too.” “What I remember, kasama ‘yan (kasunduan) when he was given an absolute pardon,” pahayag ni Tañada. May gusto tapos biglang ayaw, ‘yung ayaw tapos biglang gusto. There are so many things that are floating in the political atmosphere, so lalo ako nag- aalala kung ano talaga ang mensaheng pinapaabot d’yan. There’s a lot of acoustics going 2 on, and until it’s over, it ain’t over,” pagdududa ni Gordon.

  • On Lav Diaz‟S a Lullaby to the Sorrowful Mystery
―Textual Mobilities: Diaspora, Migration, Transnationalism and Multiculturalism‖ | Lullaby of Diasporic Time: On Lav Diaz‟s A Lullaby to the Sorrowful Mystery Christian Jil R. Benitez Ateneo de Manila University Philippines [email protected] Abstract Lav Diaz is a Filipino independent filmmaker notable as a key figure in the contemporary slow cinema movement. Of his oeuvre, one of the longest is A Lullaby to the Sorrowful Mystery (Filipino: Hele sa Higawang Hapis), a 2016 epic film that runs for 8 hours, orchestrating narratives derived from what are conveniently sung as mythology (i.e., Jose Rizal‘s El filibusterismo and Philippine folklore) and history (i.e., Philippine history and artifacts). The movie competed in the 66th Berlin International Film Festival, where it won the Alfred Bauer Prize. This success has earned Diaz‘s the spotlight in the Filipino mainstream culture, enabling the film to be distributed to and showcased in mainstream platforms, albeit primarily garnering attention from the Filipino audience for its runtime and international attention. The movement of the film, as a text, from the local Philippines toward the international and returning home, incurs in it a textuality that disrupts the phenomenology of time diasporically, scatteringly: that as much as its 8-hour languor ―opens new perspective in the cinematic arts‖ according to the international rendition of this time, it is also the 8-hour whose value in the Philippine time is that of a day‘s labor, and thus the exoticization of its cinematic experience as a ―challenge,‖ having to endure an entire working day of slow cinematography. This diaspora of time is of no cacophony; on the contrary, it is the lullaby, sorrowful and mysterious, that finally slows Diaz in to become a filmmaker attuned to both the spaces of the local and the international.

Campos / Ghostly Allegories 611 GHOSTLY ALLEGORIES: HAUNTING AS CONSTITUTION OF PHILIPPINE (TRANS) NATIONAL (CINEMA) HISTORY Patrick Campos University of the Philippines Film Institute [email protected] Abstract By reading through the con–texts of Yam Laranas’s The Echo (2008) and Kelvin Tong’s The Maid (2005), the essay considers three Filipino genres that ironically gathered momentum at the time of the Philippine film industry’s crisis and decline in the 1990s up to the 2000s – the historical drama, the OFW (overseas Filipino worker) film, and horror. In the process, the essay constitutes an alternative map of Philippine cinema premised on inter-national transactions across states and film industries, on the one hand, and on the nodal and spectral bodies of Filipinas that network these states and industries, on the other hand. Dwelling on multiform hauntings, it ultimately focuses on how nations/cinemas – through (de)localized genres – are constituted and called into account by specters of (cinema) histories. Keywords Philippine cinema, Singapore cinema, transnational cinema, Asian horror, OFW film About the Author Patrick Campos is Assistant Professor at the University of the Philippines Film Institute. • Fall of Grace: Nora Aunor As Cinema 46
Flores / Fall of Grace: Nora Aunor as Cinema 46 FALL OF GRACE: NORA AUNOR AS CINEMA Patrick D. Flores University of the Philippines [email protected] Abstract Nora Aunor is enlisted in this speculation as a medium in the register of both the cinema and the transmission of spirit. The key trajectory is the oft-cited film Himala, which opens up a conceptual space for mediumship, the technology of the actress, her biography and corpus of art, and the devotion to her person. The essay constellates a set of texts including the sculpture in honor of Elsa, the main character of Himala, the film Silip, and the life of a fan. Nora, the performative vessel of Elsa, becomes fundamentally cinematic. It is through her that Elsa is fleshed out as a miracle worker of vexing potency. Nora is herself a testament to the transformative potential of the technology of the cinema. Keywords devotion, film, image, medium, spirit, voice About the Author Patrick D. Nanyang Technological University Library WORKING PAPER ONLY NOT FOR PUBLICATION \> ' [He* Portraits of Youth in Philippine Films Isagani R. Cruz, Ph.D. De La Salle University Manila, Philippines In classical literary theory, art was usually viewed as a mirror of reality. Modern literary theory has modified this classical view somewhat. It is today more customary to talk of art as a mirror in which people see themselves. Instead of merely passively reflecting reality, art is more often seen today as an active participant, or at least a catalyst, in the way people define themselves. In many ways, people behave according to the way art portrays them. ft Such theorizing, of course, is almost always couched in the impractical jargon of literary theory, which is today caught in the fashions of deconstructive and post—structuralist thought.
