CKUA broadcasts throughout Alberta, over a terrestrial network of 17 transmitters that are fed via Telesat satellite from Edmonton studio facilities. CKUA is also currently available in much of Canada as part of the radio bundles on Starchoice Satellite and in parts of Alberta and British Columbia, as part of the radio bundles of select cable providers. CKUA is also heard around the world on the internet, at www.ckua.com For years, CKUA has received numerous requests from across Canada and elsewhere about the possibility of accessing CKUA's unique programming via satellite. Making CKUA available throughout the nation via satellite would greatly benefit Canadians by providing access to and meeting demand for CKUA's unique content and programming. In addition, making CKUA - a licensed Community broadcaster - available in this way would appropriately provide on satellite, the complete spectrum of radio services mandated by the Broadcasting act; that is, private, commercial radio, public broadcasting, as represented by the CBC, and Cornmunity-based broadcasting, represented by CKUA. CKUA is also the carrier and primary provider of Alberta's internationally acclaimed Emergency Public Warning System (EPWS), in co-operation with the Alberta Government. This service also relies on Telesat's facilities to activate individual receivers in areas of immanent danger. CKUA is extremely interested in expanding this vital public alerting service to make it available on a national basis for the protection and benefit of all Canadians. However, without access to proposed new satellite spectrum, CKUA is unable to do so, thus restricting availability to one the world's proven and renowned public alerting systems. 53 Date: August 15, 2006 .
