Introduction: This material represents the contribution of a rather small number of active individuals to the Clan Gregor Centre over many years of collecting and compiling. It represent both traditional knowledge and many years of research. It has occasionally been possible to attribute a file to a named individual but in most cases the folders are composite collections from many sources and these are attributed to me in my capacity as curator and general editor. The members of the Clan as a whole, who are extremely numerous, owe the active few a great deal since they have been among the very few to keep hold of their real past and to avoid the romantic escapism that pervades modern Highland culture, if that is the right word. It has been possible, with the support of these few active members and the willing collaboration of the National Library of Scotland, not only to preserve their knowledge but often to extend it since modern research tools have made it sometimes possible to find solutions to long-standing problems. -

2.1 Rob Roy and the Jacobites
12 2.1 Rob Roy and the Jacobites Rob Roy MacGregor, the third son of Donald Glas MacGregor of Glengyle and Margaret Campbell, was born in Glengyle, on Loch Katrine-side, in 1671. He spent much of his life in the Trossachs, the area of lochs and rugged hills lying east of Loch Lomond. From Aberfoyle to Killin, the Way skirts the eastern edge of the Trossachs. Rob Roy was a man of property and was involved in large-scale cattle droving and dealing. He and his brother Iain developed the Lennox Watch, a body that offered ‘protection’ to cattle owners in return for money. When protection money was not paid, cattle tended mysteriously to ‘disappear’. Activities like this by the MacGregors and some other clans gave us the word ‘blackmail’, black for nefarious deeds and the colour of most of the cattle of past times; mail from Scots and Gaelic words for rent or payment. (The larger, and mainly red-brown Highland cows that we see today are a 19th century cross-breed.) After his father was captured and imprisoned, at the age of only 30 Rob Roy effectively became the Chief of a leading section of his pugnacious and persecuted clan. In those days the powerful Duke of Montrose was his patron. His luck changed and his business collapsed when his drover Duncan MacDonald disappeared, taking with him the enormous sum of £1000 intended for cattle purchase. In 1712 the Duke of Montrose (to whom he owed money) turned against him and had him bankrupted and outlawed. His wife and family were evicted, and several of his houses were burned or ransacked. -

The Jacobite Rebellion of 1719: Revenge and Regrets by PJ Klinger October, 2013 Director of Thesis: Dr. Jonathan Reid Major Department: History The Jacobite Rebellion of 1719 was an ambitious failed attempt by Spain and the Jacobites to restore the exiled Stuart king James III to the British throne. Because of its failure, the 1719 rebellion has received little attention from scholars. This thesis examines the Jacobite Rebellion of 1719 and the roles that Spain and the Jacobites had during this rebellion and creates a full narrative of the planning and execution of the rebellion. In examining these roles this thesis traces the origins of the rebellion, determines fault for the rebellion’s failure, and for the first time reconstructs the weather that played a pivotal role in the failure of the rebellion. This thesis argues that the 1719 rebellion was in fact a significant Jacobite rebellion that could have potentially shifted the balance of power in Europe during the early eighteenth century had it not been for the intervention of the weather. Women, Representation, and Politics in Walter Scott's Rob
Neither Full nor Flat: Women, Representation, and Politics in Walter Scott’s Rob Roy Bronte Wells Scott’s Rob Roy is a novel that comments on the contemporary politics of its publication, as well as the issues of the past. Just as Scott’s novel is commenting on the political emotions of the age of revolution, Rob Roy, intentionally or unintentionally, allows for the readers to analyze aspects of Romantic gender politics through the novel’s female characters and how they are framed in the plot. Though there are few female characters amongst the cast in Scott’s Rob Roy, Diana Vernon and Helen MacGregor are two of the more memorable. Both women are dynamic, exciting, and their bold actions and thoughts are enticing to readers. However, they still suffer from similar trappings that other female characters in literature have fallen into and, while they appear and feel dynamic, the characters are also flat. Female bodies and characteristics have been repetitively used for the purposes of allegory or metaphor; women as characters are not simply women, but are embodiments of fear, ridicule, ideals, and a whole host of politics. While Helen and Diana are not fully allegorical characters, there are politics and fears that they are meant to represent and that prevents them from fully actualized human characters within Rob Roy. Helen MacGregor is arguably the most threatening character in the novel. She is not painted as a character to be reviled; however, she is meant to be feared and be read as such by the audience. While her husband plays the role of Robin Hood-reborn, Helen plays the wronged, merciless, and violent revolutionary. -

Through the analysis of various acts of hospitality in the Waverley Novels, this thesis intends to examine how the notion of hospitality is represented as one of the most significant, ancient Scottish traditions defended and performed by people who have less power in society, but is abused by those (often the ruling class) who intend to use it as a mechanism to increase their existing power. Therefore, through the analysis of power relations between various host and guest characters, this thesis attempts to demonstrate the ways in which those groups who are under the rule of hegemonic power are constructed as the subaltern, a postcolonial term derived from the Italian Marxist Antonio Gramsci’s usage in the Prison Notebooks. -

Using the concept of remediation, Chapter 2 focuses on Scott’s procreativity in other media, especially the theatre, in order to explain the apparent paradox that novelistic adaptation was linked both to the desire for new forms of immediacy and to the pleasure of reiteration. After a brief survey of the adaptations of his work to the visual arts and material culture, the chapter turns to dramatizations of the Waverley novels, focusing in particular on the repeated productions of Rob Roy (1817) whose popularity on stage is explained as a way of performing Scottishness ‘live’. The later adaptations of the novel to the screen show how Scott’s novel helped relay popular culture into the twentieth century. WALTER SCOTT IN COMICS Christopher Murray There is a long history of visual interpretations and adaptations of Walter Scott’s writings. From illustrations and frontispieces, to chapbooks, paintings interpreting scenes from the stories, theatrical performances, illustrated children’s editions, and, eventually, film adaptations, these remediations of Scott’s work have informed and influenced one another.1 In her article “The Illustration of Sir Walter Scott: Nineteenth-Century Enthusiasm and Adaptation” (1971), Catherine Gordon observes that hundreds of painters and sculptors produced and exhibited over a thousand works inspired by Scott at the Royal Academy and British Institution, and what she refers to as “Scott mania” resulted in Minton and Wedgwood producing Scott inspired -
