LELAND - No, you haven’t missed an indoor track facility being built in south- eastern North Carolina. There are state championships held by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association in boys and girls indoor track on Feb. 12-13. Any individual/team may compete IF they meet the criteria set by the NCHSAA for minimum times in track and distance in field events. The qualifying events may take place outdoors if at least five teams are pres- ent and the proper forms are submitted to the NCHSAA. Such an event took place at North Brunswick Wednesday. North Brunswick’s girls and boys easily won the team competition. Whiteville’s boys finished second and the Wolfpack girls finished third. It marked Whiteville High’s first-ever appearance in a state-sanctioned indoor qualifying meet. Most of the meet was run in temperatures in the low 40s accom- panied by a steady wind. Coach Will Dorn’s Wolfpack teams did not have an individual winner, but sev- eral relay teams captured top spots. The girls 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams each took first place.
