Its true scale and achievement was more widely appreciated. This sequence oT reactions resembled tlioso originally given the hook -- the whimsy oT the first few chapters repelling readers then unlikely to sample the more mature Imagination oT the later parts. Only with a full study oT the saga was Its worth better understood. Nonetheless, both novel and serial have produced the most polarised reactions concerning technique and content. With Its fourth broadcast in the Spring of 1907, this radio dramatisation Is now regarded as one of the finest of the decade, surpassing past productions In scope and ambition. Ihe strongest tribute from within the BBC Is the serial's present release on audio cassette. The first broadcast had a profound effect on the Tolkien Society. Radio limes published a colour feature on the serial, discussing the book and the Society. A Tolkien Society address was printed, prompting a flood of enquiries and new members, until the total membership reached an unprecedented high oT around 1000, a number which has since declined. A number oT subjective criticisms were printed in Amon Hen, but nothing resembling any kind of appraisal of the full serial. A one-off magazine was published. ABSTRACT: Military dictatorships, guerrillas and geopolitical conflicts in Latin- American countries like Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Mexico, Nicaragua and El Salvador have been the object of analysis in various Canadian and American fictional films and documentaries in the last decades. Innumerable films and documentaries produced in Canada and the U.S. with institutional have depicted geopolitical conflicts in Latin America. Within this context of filmic production, this paper analyzes Oliver Stone´s documentary “South of the Border”, produced in 2009. Stone presents various interviews by former Latin American presidents. The film focuses on political differences between Latin America national politics and US foreign policies, as well as on US major TV Channels and its manipulation of the media, regarding Latin American political arena. The paper analyzes the conflicting discourses imbued in the film: its denouncing tone of neoliberalism and the erasure of Latin American national differences in the aesthetics choices and narrative techniques of the film. -

Subcultural Appropriation of Disney Normative Characters in Countercultural Performance Responses Brady Mcdonough, Communicating Arts Dr
Subcultural Appropriation of Disney Normative Characters in Countercultural Performance Responses Brady McDonough, Communicating Arts Dr. Alison Wielgus, Department of Communicating Arts University of Wisconsin Superior Introduction Walt Disney is remembered fondly as “Uncle Walt” who re-told fairy tales in ways that were less gruesome than their originals and moved audiences to laughter and tears. Disney’s hard upbringing led to his strict personal belief system that reinforced proper behavior and a heterosexual, nuclear family structure. Fantasy was Disney’s favorite escape as a child, and he loved telling stories as an adult so much that he made it a wildly successful business. Starting in 1923 as Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio, Walt Disney began with animated shorts before eventually moving into feature-length productions. The power to reach audiences comes with the ability to convey a worldview to the public. Disney used his adaptations of fairy tales from authors such as the Brothers Grimm, Charles Perrault, and Hans Christian Anderson to entertain and teach children and adults what the perfect fantasy world could be. Disney’s versions of classic fairy tales supported a white, heterosexual, Judeo-Christian worldview known as heteronormativity. This heteronormative culture maintains a dominant status in American society called hegemony. Dominant cultures often inspire the formation of subcultures whose members do not fit the hegemonic normative culture. This paper will incorporate the work of Dick Hebdige and Judith Butler to explain subcultural creation and modes of response to hegemony, specifically through drag’s appropriation of characters. Character traits being normalized or vilified is in issue of semiotics, meaning the signs of characters and traits signify one as “good” or “evil” dependent on their performance of certain characteristics.
