Expansion….FAQ’s 44-45

SFCRA AGM Information 48 Page 2 Page 47 A Message From The President of the SFCRA Board, Simone Mersereau My recent messages in this newsletter have provided you with updates on our plans for the SFCRA expansion project. To quickly recap, we are continuing with our plans to add two additional ice surfaces to the existing SFCRA rinks at an estimated total cost of $30 million. In late 2007, we received a commitment from the City of for $14 million of Provincial MSI funds towards this goal. On the heels of this commitment, we made a grant request to the Province of for an additional $10 million and we intend to raise the remaining $6 million from corporate and community sources. We have raised $589,000 in private funding to date including a $10,000 commitment from the SFCRA staff. Projects of this magnitude often face challenges along the way. The SFCRA expansion project is currently facing a number of challenges. The key challenges are: • A delay in receiving a decision from the Province of Alberta regarding our request for a $10 million grant from the Major Community Facilities Program. • The delay in starting construction results in additional inflationary costs that will have to be raised by the community. A belief in the marketplace that open air or lightly covered (rink-in-a-box) concepts are better and more timely solutions to the covered arena solutions proposed by SFCRA, Centennial, TRICO Centre, and others. These challenges have a number of ripple-down effects including: • Hesitation among our potential corporate and community donors to commit to a project that does not yet have a critical mass of funding. • A lack of engagement by the community in the expansion project for the same reasons our corporate and community partners are hesitant to make a financial commitment to the project. A belief among our potential corporate and community donors that timelier and more cost-effective solutions are to be found in the open air and lightly covered ice surfaces.

The SFCRA Board along with our two aldermen, Linda Fox-Mellway and Dianne Colley-Urquhart, our two MLAs, Cindy Ady and Dave Rodney, the Building Committee, led by Lew Hayes, and our campaign team, led by Vincent Duckworth are all working very hard to meet and surmount these challenges. Specifically, we are working on the following strategies: • We are working very closely with our City representatives to hasten the design process for the expansion as the inflationary costs are a real challenge. • We are working very closely with our Provincial representatives to hasten a positive decision around our $10 million grant request. • Our building expansion committee is looking at possible scaled back versions based on money raised and estimated project costs • We are preparing a number of messaging strategies to address the positive role permanent covered arenas like ours play in the addressing the ‘ice crisis’ in Calgary. We are ramping up our expansion project awareness activities. These activities will include expansion project signage and a campaign office at the SFC Complex. How can you help? We cannot overcome these challenges alone. We need your help. We have heard time and time again, from our City representatives and our Provincial representatives, that a high level of community engagement or involvement in our project is very important. Your help can make a significant difference in the following areas: Attend the SFCRA Annual General Meeting on November 20 (7 pm, SFC Complex). We have invited both of our City Representatives and both of our Provincial representatives and we expect one or more of them to speak at the AGM. We need at least 200 members of our community to attend this meeting. By attending this meeting, you will send a strong signal that this project has a high level of community engagement.

We need volunteers for every stage of the campaign. Currently, we need volunteers for our Campaign Communications Committee (“Getting the message out”) and our Leadership Gifts Committee (“Getting gifts of $100,000 and greater”). Please call or email Vincent Duckworth at 403-973-9696.([email protected]) to volunteer today.

We need members of the community with personal, high-level corporate contacts to help us make our case to potential donors and sponsors for the project. Please call or email Vincent Duckworth at (403) 973-9696 ([email protected]). The ultimate success of this project belongs in all of our hands. Our project is at a crossroads. With your help, we will navigate these challenges and jointly celebrate the opening of two new arenas at SFC.

President, South Fish Creek Recreation Association Page 46 Simone Mersereau Page 3 The “rink-in-a-box” concept should not be characterized as a replacement for permanent facilities. We feel the two types of facilities are complementary and that the need for additional ice surfaces beyond the 12 mentioned is critical for Calgarians. WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP? We cannot overcome the challenges to build these 2 new arenas alone. We need your help. We have heard time and time again, from our City representatives and our Provincial representatives, that we do not appear to have a high level of community engagement or involvement in our project. WHAT ADVANTAGES DO COVERED ARENAS LIKE THE SFCRA EXPANSION PROJECT OFFER OVER THE RINK-IN- A-BOX CONCEPTS? The “rink-in-a-box” concept described by Hockey Calgary provides a unique and economical solution to ice needs however this concept should not be construed as a “replacement” for fully equipped ice facilities. What a fully equipped indoor facility offers is the potential for 12 months operation and availability of ice, full-scale dressing/ change rooms for users, much needed storage facilities, spectator capacity, community meeting spaces, the highest quality ice that is not dependent on weather, and a facility that will be easily and inexpensively maintained for multiple decades. Page 34 Page 15 Introducing Elaine Hall, SFCRA’s Amazing Play School Instructor!

I’m Elaine and I have worked at S.F.C.R.A as the playschool instructor for the last two years. I really enjoy working with young children and watching their enthusiasm and willingness to learn new skills. It is great to see their growth and progression from timidly attending parented classes through to the independence and confidence of ‘All grown up’ playschool classes.

I have worked with children and youth of all ages, both in a school environment and with church groups. I gained most of my school experience working as a teaching assistant in a school for hearing impaired children in Durban South Africa. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and gained a lot of knowledge and insight.

I came to Calgary with my family five years ago Drop In Fees At SFCRA after living in South Africa for seven years, although we are originally from England. I have been married to my wonderful husband for 27 years and we have four great children, the oldest two of which are both married and I am ‘gra’mum’ to the Public Skate Shinny & Figure Skating Rates cutest little 10 month old boy. Page 22 Page 27 Page 26 Page 23 Bishop O’Byrne News By Sandy Brown, Vice-Principal The fall has been busy at Bishop O’Byrne. We welcomed all students back to school, including a great bunch of grade 10s, with a barbeque lunch. All our seasonal sports are well underway and the warm temperatures have been appreciated.

We are proud of our new mural above the theatre which was paid for by our graduating class of 2008 and our School Council. Created by Al Geritson, the theme is “You are the Light for the World.”

Our Bishop O’Byrne Bobcat team once again joined the fight against Breast Cancer on October 5th. For the 5th year in a row our school won the Top High School Award with over 80 students participating and raising over $7,000.00!

For our Main Stage drama performance this spring, we are excited to be presenting “The Wizard of Oz.”

In the spring, students from French classes are going to the Quebec Winter Carnival and band and choir students are going to Anaheim, California for a festival.
