U.S. SENATE: Control of the U.S. Senate is still to be determined. As of Wednesday morning, Democrats have won Arizona and Colorado but lost Alabama. Several races including Maine, North Carolina, and Michigan are still too close to call. U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES: The Democrat Party will retain control of the House but with a slimmer majority. Currently, Republicans have picked-up a net of four seats with many races still too close to call. OHIO CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATION: All members of the Ohio Congressional delegation were re-elected. • Rep. Troy Balderson (R-OH-12) defeated Democrat Alaina Shearer and Libertarian John Stewart. • Rep. Joyce Beatty (D-OH-3) defeated Republican Mark Richardson. • Rep. Steve Stivers (R-OH-15), an Ohio State alum, defeated Democrat Joel Newby. Neither of Ohio’s Senators were up for re-election. OHIO STATE CONGRESSIONAL ALUMNI: • Representative Alma Adams (D-NC-3), who received a PhD in 1981, won re-election. • Representative Alan Lowenthal (D-CA-47), who received a MA in 1965 and PhD in 1967, won re-election. • Representative Harley Rouda (D-CA-48), who received his MBA in 2002, is currently trailing his opponent with 93 percent of the estimated vote total reported.

Legislative Report 11/4/2019 BALLOT ISSUES While the federal government does provide protections against foreign entities gaining control of critical infrastructure in Ohio and across the U.S., the Buckeye State should adopt a constitutional amendment to better protect its power plants, electric transmission lines, oil and gas pipelines and water treatment plants, Reps. Don Manning (R-New Middletown) and Jamie Callender (R-Concord) said Wednesday. Speaking to the House Energy and Natural Resources Committee during the panel's first hearing on HJR2, Manning said they have been "troubled by the growing trend of foreign entities acquiring or financing some of our country's most critical infrastructure," so they'd like to place the "Ohio Critical Infrastructure Protection Amendment" (OCIPA) on the November 2020 ballot. FirstEnergy Solutions (FES) says the state must quash the referendum campaign against HB6 (Callender-Wilkin) energy subsidies once and for all or risk losing its two nuclear power plants and their half billion dollars in annual gross domestic product (GDP). The company lodged a second request this week for expedited briefings in State ex rel. FES v. Ohioans Against Corporate Bailouts after its first attempt failed in early September. The Ohio Supreme Court answered Thursday by ordering the campaign and Secretary of State Frank LaRose to respond to FirstEnergy's "new exigencies" no later than Tuesday, Nov. 5. BUSINESS/CORPORATE Cleveland will be the home of the new Americas headquarters for the London Stock Exchange's ELITE initiative and the site of its "Global ELITE Day 2020" conference next year, according to a Monday announcement.

  • Election 2016: Recap from a Historic Night
November 14, 2016 Election 2016: Recap from a Historic Night As we digest the 2016 election, it was again clear that the old adage “to win the presidency you must win Ohio” held true. Donald Trump will become the 45th President of the United States following one of the wildest election nights our nation has ever seen. Here in Ohio, Mr. Trump held on to a 52.6-43.0 percent victory. This is the largest victory margin in an Ohio presidential election since 1988 when George H.W. Bush defeated Michael Dukakis by 10.9 percent. Rob Portman wins second term in U.S. Senate; all incumbents win U.S. Congressional races In Ohio’s Senate race, Sen. Rob Portman routed former Gov. Ted Strickland in what was a crucial battleground state. While national Democrats initially had high hopes that they would be able to oust Portman with a high profile challenger such as Strickland, they quickly faced insurmountable fundraising deficits and outside spending on behalf of Portman’s campaign. Portman ultimately came out on top 58.3-36.9 percent. There were no surprises in any of the 16 Ohio Congressional districts, as all of the incumbent members won by comfortable margins. In Washington, our state is now represented by one Republican and one Democrat Senator and 12 Republican members and four Democrat House members. DeWine wins open seat for Ohio Supreme Court; Fischer ahead; O’Connor unopposed It was the race between Ohio Appellate Judge Pat Fischer and Cuyahoga Common Pleas Judge John O’Donnell that got the most attention down the stretch.

  • Statehouse Report
March 31, 2017 Big step forward for permissive county authority to levy additional $5 motor vehicle license fee Thank you to CCAO members & partners for your awesome advocacy efforts! Thanks to the General Assembly approving the Transportation Budget Conference Committee Report, counties are a BIG step closer to being able to levy an additional $5 motor vehicle license fee to fund local road and bridge infrastructure. The Conference Committee, tasked with ironing out the differences between the Ohio House and Senate, on Monday picked the House-passed provision that gave a board of county commissioners or county council the permissive authority to pass a resolution enacting the fee, though subject to voter referendum. County commissioners, county executives and county council members along with their staff and CCAO’s policy team worked with a coalition of advocates, including the County Engineers Association of Ohio (CEAO), regional planning agencies and several business organizations, to support the proposed additional $5 motor vehicle license tag fee, which hasn’t been adjusted since 1987. Thank you to CCAO’s members and our partners for your advocacy efforts that made an enormous difference! Several elected officials along with county staff provided testimony and attended statehouse hearings. Moreover, many contacted lawmakers expressing support for a board of commissioners and council members to exercise funding decisions, subject to referendum, that reflect the needs of their counties. The measure is before the Governor for his consideration and is expected to take action on the bill soon. Details on other provisions in the bill and the Governor’s action will be reported in next week’s CCAO Statehouse Report.
