This seems evident to the casual visitor, and it is confirmed by more systematic evidence. For example, table 8.1 shows that, even after the 20 percent depreciation of the krona in 1992, Swedish con- sumer prices remain higher than in most developed countries. Moreover, avail- able data indicate that Sweden’s high-price status goes back at least to the late 1960s (Lipsey and Swedenborg 1993), a period encompassing considerable exchange rate fluctuations. These high prices cannot be entirely explained by Sweden’s income level (see fig. 8.1) or by its high indirect taxes (Lipsey and Swedenborg 1993). In this paper, we will try to assess the contribution of Swedish competition and regulatory policy to these high prices. To an outsider, especially an American conditioned by that country’s anti- trust laws, Swedish policy on competition has been remarkably lax. -

Presented at the 87th Annual Meeting of the Transportation Research Board, January 2008 ABSTRACT Vehicle externality costs include emissions of greenhouse and other gases (affecting global warming and human health), crash costs (imposed on crash partners), roadway congestion, and space consumption, among others. These five sources of external costs by vehicle make and model were estimated for the top-selling passenger cars and light-duty trucks in the U.S. Among these external costs, those associated with crashes and congestion are estimated to be the most practically significant. When crash costs are included, the worst offenders (in terms of highest external costs) were found to be pickups. If crash costs are removed from the comparisons, the worst offenders tend to be four pickups and a very large SUV: the Ford F-350 and F-250, Chevrolet Silverado 3500, Dodge Ram 3500, and Hummer H2, respectively. Regardless of how the costs are estimated, they are considerable in magnitude, and nearly on par with vehicle purchase prices. -

The Marginal Cost of Traffic Congestion and Road Pricing: Evidence from a Natural Experiment in Beijing Shanjun Li Avralt-Od Purevjav Jun Yang1 Preliminary and Comments Welcome December 2016 ABSTRACT Leveraging a natural experiment and big data, this study examines road pricing, the first-best policy to address traffic congestion in Beijing. Based on fine-scale traffic data from over 1500 monitoring stations throughout the city, this paper provides the first empirical estimate of the marginal external cost of traffic congestion (MECC) and optimal congestion charges based on the causal effect of traffic density on speed, a key input for measuring the MECC. The identification of the causal effect relies on the plausibly exogenous variation in traffic density induced by the driving restriction policy. Our analysis shows that the MECC during rush hours is about 92 cents (or $0.15) per km on average, nearly three times as much as what OLS regressions would imply and larger than estimates from transportation engineering models. The optimal congestion charges range from 5 to 38 cents per km depending on time and location. Road pricing would increase traffic speed by 10 percent within the city center and lead to a welfare gain of 1.4 billion and revenue of 40 billion Yuan per year. It is very interesting to see that a lot of people can be transported by public transport very efficiently in enormous cities like Paris and London. When I studied economics, I learned that price is very important in the market system of demand and supply. On first sight, delivering something ‘free’ may therefore sound strange for an economist and also for me. Nothing is ‘free’, only the rising of the sun. However, the capitalistic economic market system is not functioning perfectly, especially because of the existence of externalities, which are not incurred by the individual decision, but harm society as a whole. This is the reason for the existence of a government. Especially in transport economics, a lot of externalities exist. Because of this, ‘free’ public transport could be an interesting policy. ‘Free’ public transport has strong advocates and opponents. During my research, I discovered that not a lot of economic academic work was produced about this interesting subject. It was hard to make a start with it, but the results are as interesting as the concept of ‘free’ public transport is. Today, in times of the credit crunch, we are thinking and reviewing economic theories. The pure market driven laisser faire policies are on its return. -

List and Haiwen Zhou NBER Technical Working Paper No. 336 March 2007 JEL No. E10,E22,O41 ABSTRACT This study develops a model of endogenous growth based on increasing returns due to firms? technology choices. Particular attention is paid to the implications of these choices, combined with the substitution of capital for labor, on economic growth in a general equilibrium model in which the R&D sector produces machines to be used for the sector producing final goods. We show that incorporating oligopolistic competition in the sector producing finals goods into a general equilibrium model with endogenous technology choice is tractable, and we explore the equilibrium path analytically. The model illustrates a novel manner in which sustained per capita growth of consumption can be achieved?through continuous adoption of new technologies featuring the substitution between capital and labor. Further insights of the model are that during the growth process, the size of firms producing final goods increases over time, the real interest rate is constant, and the real wage rate increases over time. -

Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation Staff Studies Report No. 2020-06 Economies of Scale in Community Banks December 2020 Staff Studies Staff www.fdic.gov/cfr • @FDICgov • #FDICCFR • #FDICResearch Economies of Scale in Community Banks Stefan Jacewitz, Troy Kravitz, and George Shoukry December 2020 Abstract: Using financial and supervisory data from the past 20 years, we show that scale economies in community banks with less than $10 billion in assets emerged during the run-up to the 2008 financial crisis due to declines in interest expenses and provisions for losses on loans and leases at larger banks. The financial crisis temporarily interrupted this trend and costs increased industry-wide, but a generally more cost-efficient industry re-emerged, returning in recent years to pre-crisis trends. We estimate that from 2000 to 2019, the cost-minimizing size of a bank’s loan portfolio rose from approximately $350 million to $3.3 billion. Though descriptive, our results suggest efficiency gains accrue early as a bank grows from $10 million in loans to $3.3 billion, with 90 percent of the potential efficiency gains occurring by $300 million. This claim is in sharp contrast to the followers of Islam, who believes that more than 1400 years ago Islam already provided the best and everlasting ideology for the welfare of humanity. This study thoroughly investigated the claims of these contrasting ideologies. The hypothesis at the core of this endeavour is that neoliberal ideology is linearly associated with social costs, which can also be explained quantitatively as something associated with reduced standard of living. In order to investigate this hypothesis, USA and Saudi Arabia are selected as a sample. Besides analysing the previous literature, descriptive statistics from the most recent 2020 world Development Indicators are used for testing this hypothesis.
