UPDATE for MEMBERS 13Th June 2019 UPDATE for MEMBERS 13th June 2019 Notification from SIPTU Trade Union of Industrial action in the Health Service Dear Colleagues The INMO have been advised by SIPTU Trade Union that they have served notice on the Health Service Executive of Industrial Action for their support grades and grade of Chef. The industrial action has been notified to the HSE in 38 locations as follows: 1. Cork University Hospital 2. Cork University Maternity Hospital 3. Kerry University Hospital 4. UL Orthopaedic Hospital Croom SIPTU Trade Union has requested that the normal Trade Union practice of workers not in dispute continuing to work as normal but not undertaking any duties normally assigned to the striking worker. Therefore, we request that all members observe this principle. If instructed to take on duties normally assigned to the grades in dispute, advise that you have been instructed by your union in accordance with normal Trade Union practice not be undertake those duties. The INMO official with responsibilities for the particular areas will also notify the nurse / midwifery managers and the hospital and HSE management that they are not to ask our members to undertake these duties as this will cause an unnecessary conflict in the workplace as normal Trade Union principles will be expected to apply as they would in any dispute. The INMO has also written to the Director of HR at the HSE requesting the employers contingency plan in respect of the grades in dispute and advising our members will not be taking on the duties of the striking worker. Thank you for your attention to this note and for those of you who work in the particular locations the IRO with responsibility for your area should be contacted if any issues arise.     The Ombudsman and the Public Hospitals The Ombudsman is Impartial Independent A free service 2 Who is the Ombudsman and what does the Ombudsman do? Peter Tyndall is the Ombudsman. The Ombudsman can examine complaints about the actions of a range of public bodies, including public hospitals. All hospitals providing public health services come within the Ombudsman’s remit. The Ombudsman can examine complaints about how hospital staff carry out their everyday administrative activities when providing public health services. These include complaints about delays or failing to take action. However, there are certain complaints that the Ombudsman cannot examine. These include complaints about: private health care regardless of where it is provided and clinical judgment by the HSE (diagnoses or decisions about treatment Is the Ombudsman independent? Yes. The Ombudsman is independent and impartial when examining complaints. 1 What can I complain to the Ombudsman about? You can complain about your experience in dealing with a hospital. This might include, among other issues, a hospital: applying an incorrect charge failing to follow approved administrative procedures, protocols or reasonable rules failing to communicate clearly failing to seek your informed consent to a procedure keeping poor records failing to respect your privacy and dignity having staff who are rude or unhelpful or who discriminate against you being reluctant to correct an error failing to deal with your complaint in accordance with the complaints process. 2 Which

The MHC welcomes the determination and resolve of the Minister for Mental Health and Older People, Mary Butler TD, to progress new and reforming legislation. The MHC was invited to comment on the draft Heads of Bill to amend the Mental Health Act, 2001. We established a working group, which was chaired by our General Counsel and included the Inspector of Mental Health Services and the MHC’s Director of Regulation. This group worked with the Commission’s Legislation Committee to provide a detailed, evidenced-based, person-centred, and rights-based submission to the Department of Health. Efficiency savings target 10.8 Increased income target 8.9 The RCSI Hospital Group serves populations in five counties – North Dublin, Meath, Louth, Cavan and Monaghan. The area stretches from the north banks of the River Liffey in Dublin City Centre, north to the border with Northern Ireland, and west to the border with County Donegal. It comprises urban, rural and commuter belt areas, and covers approximately 6,817 square kilometres in total. There is considerable variation in population density from a low of 39 persons per square kilometre in Cavan to a high of 4,139 persons per square kilometre in north Dublin city. Residents of neighbouring areas such as South Dublin and Kildare also access hospitals for secondary care and maternity services. Beaumont Hospital, which is the largest hospital in the group, in addition to providing emergency and acute Secondary Care services to the local community is also a designated Cancer Centre, the Regional Treatment Centre for Ear, Nose and Throat and Gastroenterology and also the National Referral Centre for Neurosurgery and Neurology, Renal Transplantation, and Cochlear Implantation - as such treating patients from all parts of the country.

  • The Chronological History of the Rotunda Hospital
    HISTORY OF THE HOSPITAL In 1745 Bartholomew Mosse, surgeon and man-midwife, founded the original Dublin Lying-In Hospital as a maternity training hospital, the first of its kind. In 1757 the institution moved to a different location where it became “The New Lying-In Hospital”. This is the hospital complex that is referred to today as simply “The Rotunda”. The Rotunda Hospital is therefore unique as an institution in that it has continued to provide an unbroken record of service to women and babies since its foundation in 1745 and has occupied its present premises since 1757. Should you wish to learn more about The Rotunda Hospital’s history, the book Masters, Midwives, and Ladies- in-Waiting (edited by Alan Browne, a former Master of the Rotunda, published by A&A Farmar, Dublin, 1995) gives a detailed account of developments in the Rotunda over the period 1945-95, which was the fifty-year period of greatest change in the history of obstetrical care. BARTHOLOMEW MOSSE 1712 Bartholomew Mosse was born the fifth child of Rev Thomas Mosse, Rector of Maryborough, now Portlaoise, and his wife Martha. 1728 Mosse, who had been privately educated by a tutor at home, was sent to serve as apprentice to a Barber Surgeon, Mr John Stone, in Dublin. 1733 Mosse was examined and qualified to practice as a surgeon by Mr John Nichols, joint Surgeon-General to the army in Ireland. Mosse obtained glowing testimonials from his master and his examiner. It is probable that he was surgical assistant to these men (themselves surgeons to Mercer’s and Dr Steevens’s Hospitals respectively) within a short time of his qualification.
