  • THE HISTORY of the PIETERSBURG [POLOKWANE] JEWISH COMMUNITY by CHARLOTTE WIENER Submitted in Fulfillment of the Requirements
THE HISTORY OF THE PIETERSBURG [POLOKWANE] JEWISH COMMUNITY by CHARLOTTE WIENER Submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS in the subject JUDAICA at the UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH AFRICA SUPERVISOR: MR CEDRIC GINSBERG NOVEMBER 2006 SUMMARY Jews were present in Pietersburg [Polokwane] from the time of its establishment in 1868. They came from Lithuania, England and Germany. They were attracted by the discovery of gold, land and work opportunities. The first Jewish cemetery was established on land granted by President Paul Kruger in 1895. The Zoutpansberg Hebrew Congregation, which included Pietersburg and Louis Trichardt was established around 1897. In 1912, Pietersburg founded its own congregation, the Pietersburg Hebrew Congregation. A Jewish burial society, a benevolent society and the Pietersburg-Zoutpansberg Zionist Society was formed. A communal hall was built in 1921 and a synagogue in 1953. Jews contributed to the development of Pietersburg and held high office. There was little anti-Semitism. From the 1960s, Jews began moving to the cities. The communal hall and minister’s house were sold in 1994 and the synagogue in 2003. Only the Jewish cemetery remains in Pietersburg. 10 key words: 1] Pietersburg [Polokwane] 2] Zoutpansberg 3] Anglo-Boer War 4] Jew 5] Synagogue 6] Cemetery 7] Rabbi 8] Hebrew 9] Zionist 10] Anti-Semitism ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank the following: Mr Cedric Ginsberg, my supervisor, for his invaluable assistance, patience and meticulous corrections The late Mr Wally Levy for his information concerning families and events in the Northern Transvaal. His prodigious memory was extremely helpful to me My husband Dennis and children Janine, Elian and Mandy, for their patience with my obsession to finish this thesis.

Its eastern boundary is the watershed between the Sand River and its tributaries and the eastward draining Letaba and Pafuri Rivers. Its northern boundary is formed by Formations of the Soutpansberg Group that built the mountain range of that name. The western boundary consists from north to south firstly of Waterberg Group sedimentary rocks, followed by mafic Bushveld rocks and lastly by strata of the Wolkberg Group including the Black Reef Formation. These strata build the Highlands Mountains and the east- northeasterly trending Strydpoort Mountains that form the southern boundary.

  • A Taxonomic Revision of Bonatea Willd. (Orchidaceae: Orchidoideae: Habenariinae) ⁎ M.E
South African Journal of Botany 73 (2007) 1–21 www.elsevier.com/locate/sajb A taxonomic revision of Bonatea Willd. (Orchidaceae: Orchidoideae: Habenariinae) ⁎ M.E. Ponsie , T.J. Edwards, S.D. Johnson School of Biological and Conservation Sciences, University of KwaZulu-Natal Pietermaritzburg, Private Bag X01, Scottsville 3209, South Africa Received 23 February 2006; accepted 31 May 2006 Abstract The diagnostic characters for Bonatea Willd. (Orchidaceae) are re-evaluated. The genus is distinguished from Habenaria by the possession of a galeate rostellum, which is clearly separated from the vertical anthers, and a tooth in the spur mouth (secondarily lost in Bonatea rabaiensis (Rendle) Rolfe). Morphological evidence suggests that Bonatea bracteata G.McDonald and McMurtry and Bonatea tentaculifera Summerh. are better placed in Habenaria, where B. bracteata is treated as a synonym of Habenaria transvaalensis Schltr., and B. tentaculifera is renamed Habenaria bonateoides M.Ponsie. A taxonomic revision and key to the species of Bonatea is presented. Fourteen species are recognized, ten of which are found in South Africa. Full descriptions are provided with diagnostic characters and distribution maps. Bonatea eminii (Kraenzl.) Rolfe, known from a single collection destroyed in Berlin, is closely allied to Bonatea steudneri (Rchb.f.) T.Durand and Schinz but is excluded from the revision due to insufficient information. © 2006 SAAB. Published by Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. Keywords: Bonatea; Habenaria; Orchidaceae; Orchidoideae; Taxonomic revision 1. Introduction by a suite of characters, including a galeate median rostellum lobe, the presence of a tooth in the spur mouth, clavate stigmas, The genus Bonatea Willd., a member of subtribe Habenariinae and the basal fusion of the lip with the lateral sepals, lower lobe (Orchidoideae), was named in honour of Guiseppe Antonio of the petals and stigmatic processes (Rolfe, 1898, 1913; Sum- Bonato (Willdenow, 1805).

  • Constitution of the Republic of South Africa: Rationalisation of Magisterial Districts for Limpopo and Mpumalanga
4 No. 39365 GOVERNMENT GAZETTE, 5 NOVEMBER 2015 GOVERNMENT NOTICES • GOEWERMENTSKENNISGEWINGS Justice and Constitutional Development, Department of/ Justisie en Staatkundige Ontwikkeling, Departement van DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE AND CONSTITUTIONAL DEVELOPMENT NO. 1059 05 NOVEMBER 2015 1059 The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996: Invitation to submit comments on the Proposed Rationalisation of Magisterial Districts for the Limpopo and Mpumalanga Provinces 39365 INVITATION TO SUBMIT COMMENTS ON THE PROPOSED RATIONALISATION OF MAGISTERIAL DISTRICTS FOR THE LIMPOPO AND MPUMALANGA PROVINCES The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996 enjoins the Minister of Justice and Correctional Services to manage the rationalisation of all courts with a view to establishing a court system suited to the requirements of the Constitution (Item 16 (6) to the Constitution). The rationalisation of magisterial districts is part of this exercise. In accordance with this constitutional imperative, the Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Adv. Michael Masutha, intends to rationalise magisterial districts in the Republic in order to align the territorial jurisdictions of all courts with the Constitution, thereby correcting the legacy of the old districts which are based on the defunct independent, self-governing states and Old RSA territories. The rationalisation process is undertaken gradually and commenced with Gauteng and North West provinces which were implemented with effect from 1 December 2014 followed by the Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces. Comments are invited on the proposed changes to the magisterial districts indicated in the Schedule below with regard to the Provinces of Limpopo and Mpumalanga. (Proposed changes to the magisterial districts in respect the outstanding Provinces will be published at a later stage).
