The classes considered the similarities between The Lion King and Hamlet, dressing gowns and slippers had to be changed for Games kit and boots. and then began the process of modernising old tales. The resulting scripts came alive when the children performed excerpts for the Year 5 Drama evening in the spring term. The children in Year 4 kicked Mummy Bear was unforgettable, as was Kit’s prop-making for the very modern version of Jack off the day with a Library Mystery. They had to solve book-related and logic-based problems and the Beanstalk. to discover the code to unlock the library, so that the rest of the school could get in there to enjoy the books. We also had a challenge across the whole school to match teachers with their A Midsummer Night’s Dream favourite childhood book, something a number of children successfully achieved. A cast of 21 pupils from Years 6 to 8 came together to put on a sumptuous summer drama performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Despite a busy schedule of lessons, exams and residential trips, they found time to design costumes, source props and learn their lines! Staged in our wonderful outdoor space at Lancing Prep Hove, parents were enchanted to see their children perform with such confidence, wit and excellent timing. From the noble graciousness of Theseus and Hippolyta to the caperings of Bottom and his fellow performers, the mischievous Puck and the warring factions of Oberon and Titania, the children had worked hard to put on a memorable show. It was a wonderful way to bring Drama to a close in the Summer Term.

26 Lancing Prep Hove Annual Review | 2018-19 27 This year in the Prep School PSHE

ersonal Social and Health Education (PSHE) continues to flourish at Lancing Prep Hove. PWith the implementation of a brand new curriculum in the school during the previous year, the shift towards a culture where children are able to bring their own identities to their learning, celebrate their differences, and value each others’ contributions is well established.

The consideration of how children can develop their intellectual characteristics including resilience, resourcefulness, reflection and relating has been complemented by the installation of each year group focusing on aspects of their moral character; kindness, responsibility, respect, politeness, generosity, gratitude, humility and integrity.

Throughout the year special events took place to mark and celebrate community initiatives as well as support children in looking at the world as ever-changing and considering their place in it. Road Safety Week In Anti-Bullying Week and Road Safety Week the school came together to challenge stereotypes, On Yer Bike work together and share positive messages with the local community. ‘On Yer Bike Day’ saw an opportunity for children to work with road safety professionals.

Democracy was seen to be alive and well during Charity Election Week when children campaigned and voted for local and national charities to be the focal points of school fundraising. The Martlets Hospice continued to have huge support from our school community as did the local ‘Snailspace’ charity art installation with the pupils visiting every one of the 50 snails in Brighton and Hove.

The parent community was responsible for delivering inspiring and engaging talks to the children during Careers Week, with World Mental Health Day proving a wonderful opportunity for the community to discuss our ongoing need to support one another. Themes of digital citizenship and literacy were brought to the fore during a visit from The British Board of Film Classification, World Mental Health Day Year 8 visit Royal Courts of Justice with British Values given greater focus during a Year 8 visit to The Royal Courts of Justice.

Education for Social Responsibility has emerged as key to all that we do at LPH. On ‘Make A Difference Day’ the school united to consider what can be done in the new geological age to support future generations. Child-led activities including beach cleans and visits to local care homes allowed for our leaders of the future to flourish.

New partnerships with world-renowned charities including ‘Ditch The Label’ supporting study of gender norms and gender equality have ensured that our provision is meaningful and relevant to the citizens of tomorrow.

36 Lancing Prep Hove Annual Review | 2018-19 37 Sporting Highlights

t’s been a good year for sport at LPH. There have been promising performances from our Irugby players as we now field teams in each year group, following changes to the RFU playing format. In the Pre-Prep there have been lots of impressive performances from our younger pupils in our thriving football and multi-sports clubs. Here are some highlights from the year:

Our U11 Boys’ football team won the Brighton & Hove Small Schools League and two pupils played for teams outside school; Horatio H for the Prep School Pumas U12 team and Henry G for the Brighton Boys’ U11 team. The girls have started to play fixtures and take part in local tournaments. The U11 Girls’ team were runners up in the girls’ Brighton & Hove Small Schools League – a remarkable achievement as it was the first time they have taken part.

In Netball and Hockey the girls are improving as they gain experience. Year 8 pupil, Frankie K. has been selected for Sussex and she has played regularly in Lancing College teams this season.

Cricket is also thriving with several LPH boys playing regularly for College senior teams. We have some outstanding younger players coming through, with William M (Year 4) taking two wickets on his debut for the U12 team in a County Cup match. The U13 and U12 teams both reached the quarter-final stage in their respective County Cups but missed out on the semis on the toss of a coin, due to rain! Jimmy L played for the U11 Sussex County side and several boys represented the Southern Sabres regional squads in various age groups. Girls’ cricket has taken off and our new Girls’ cricket club is well attended, with the first fixtures played this summer.

Our swimmers are also enjoying increased success in galas, with growing numbers attending weekly swim squad training run by Lancing College. Bethany K in Year 7 took part in the IAPS National swimming competition and in her own right swam in the county and regional galas and was placed second overall in her age group at the regionals.

The LPH squash club is ever-popular with some talented players coming through. The U11 team took part in the annual Lancing College Squash Tournament and performed well to book their place in the semi-finals, where they just lost out to the eventual winners.

More pupils have been taking part in Athletics and Cross-Country meets. Miles W represented Sussex in the multi-sports category and won a Gold medal at the Sussex Cross-Country, going on to represent the County at the Nationals. Miles also came first in the Handcross Park invitational cross-country meet. Max S took 1st place in the Oakwood x-country U11 race and Zoe L finished 3rd in the Girls’ U10 race.

Boys and girls have been competitive in both local and county Tennis competitions. Jayden H, Ethan R, Mia H, Alec V, Jacob T and Ben A are all members of Sussex Tennis squad and Jayden and Mia have been awarded Junior and Senior tennis awards, The U9 Boys won two Sussex titles and it was pleasing to see Alec V and Jacob T awarded Fair Play trophies for their sportsmanship.
