  • The Chemical Brothers: Elektrobank (Spike Jonze 1997) And
The Chemical Brothers: Elektrobank (Spike Jonze 1997) and Star Guitar (Michel Gondry 2001) Once you feel you’ve got the trust in the director, then it’s their thing and they make the video. (The Chemical Brothers – Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons) For some types of music, particularly electronic dance, there is almost a sub-genre of videos in which the artist either does not appear at all or merely makes a token cameo appearance. Specialists in this are the directors Spike Jonze and Michel Gondry who have both taken music promos in new directions, effectively finding a mass audience for experimental filmmaking. Though both directors have made plenty of videos featuring the artist as central performer, their willingness to push the boundaries of the conventions of music video has led to some interesting work. In Electrobank, Jonze used the idea of the Svengali coach training a young gymnast, based on his reading about Soviet coaches of young girls preparing for the Olympic Games. His (then) girlfriend, Sofia Coppola, appeared as the main character – a high school competitor – and had to learn gymnastics, dance and ribbonwork for the part. Jonze created a back-story for her and the other characters, where she chooses this music for her routine (counterpointed by the classical music which plays as she arrives in the hall). This short film represents a melodrama in which the young gymnast battles against a leg injury with the encouragement of both her coach and her family to narrowly win at the end. It is a simple story, told visually, mainly through exchanges of looks between characters and through the routine she performs, but what makes it memorable is the context – this is a music video.

  • Began Her Professional Career in 1966 at the Cafe Wha? in Greenwich
SUSAN COLLINS began her professional career in 1966 at the Cafe Wha? in Greenwich Village singing with Jimi Hendrix in Jimmy James and the Blue Flames, the ground-breaking guitarist’s group just before he left NYC for London. Then a sophomore straight out of Brooklyn’s Lafayette High, Susan was managed by singer-songwriter Richie Havens, with whom she later attended Woodstock, flying in by helicopter. In 2011 Susan’s close friend and musical director of 35 years, Paul Shaffer stated: “Susan Collins is my favorite singer…period!” Paul calls her “my BFF and a singer’s singer - what a voice!” In 2006 Susan sang a song she co-wrote with Paul, on a bill with Harry Shearer, Marshall Crenshaw, and They Might Be Giants at NYC’s Canal Room. Of this performance, Fox News.com’s Roger Friedman wrote: “Collins is terrific. She can hold her own with Ronnie Spector any day of the week.” Susan appeared with Spector, Lesley Gore, Lala Brooks et. al. at Lincoln Center’s girl group tribute SHE’S GOT THE POWER in the summer of 2011. YOU CAN TAKE THE GIRL OUTTA BROOKLYN, Susan’s autobiographical musical revue (originated at bergenPac NJ before its NYC run), tells the story of how she started singing a cappella on the street corner of her housing project in the 1960s and went on to a career in the music business, making key vocal contributions to numerous hit records, TV shows, movies and advertising. Recipient of the ASCAP Award for songwriting, Susan’s first day job was writing for legendary producer/TV host and 2012 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, the late Don Kirshner.

  • The Heart of Rock and Soul by Dave Marsh
The Heart of Rock and Soul by Dave Marsh 20 BE MY BABY, The Ronettes Produced by Phil Spector; written by Phil Spector, Ellie Greenwich, and Jeff Barry Philles 116 1963 Billboard: #2 DA DOO RON RON, The Crystals Produced by Phil Spector; written by Phil Spector, Ellie Greenwich, and Jeff Barry Philles 112 1963 Billboard: #3 CHRISTMAS (BABY PLEASE COME HOME), Darlene Love Produced by Phil Spector; written by Phil Spector, Ellie Greenwich, and Jeff Barry Philles 119 1963 Did not make pop charts To hear folks talk, Phil Spector made music out of a solitary vision. But the evidence of his greatest hits insists that he was heavily dependent on a variety of assistance. Which makes sense: Record making is fundamentally collaborative. Spector associates like engineer Larry Levine, arranger Jack Nitzsche, and husband-wife songwriters Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich were simply indispensable to his teen-art concoctions. Besides them, every Spector track featured a dozen or more musicians. The constant standouts were' drummer Hal Blaine, one of the most inventive and prolific in rock history, and saxophonist Steve Douglas. Finally, there were vast differences among Spector's complement of singers. An important part of Spector's genius stemmed from his ability to recruit, organize, and provide leadership within such a musical community. Darlene Love (who also recorded for Spector with the Crystals and Bob B. Soxx and the Blue Jeans) ranks just beneath Aretha Franklin among female rock singers, and "Christmas" is her greatest record, though it was never a hit. (The track probably achieved its greatest notice in the mid-eighties, when it was used over the opening credits of Joe Dante's film, Gremlins.) Spector's Wall of Sound, with its continuously thundering horns and strings, never seemed more massive than it does here.

  • The Twenty Greatest Music Concerts I've Ever Seen
THE TWENTY GREATEST MUSIC CONCERTS I'VE EVER SEEN Whew, I'm done. Let me remind everyone how this worked. I would go through my Ipod in that weird Ipod alphabetical order and when I would come upon an artist that I have seen live, I would replay that concert in my head. (BTW, since this segment started I no longer even have an ipod. All my music is on my laptop and phone now.) The number you see at the end of the concert description is the number of times I have seen that artist live. If it was multiple times, I would do my best to describe the one concert that I considered to be their best. If no number appears, it means I only saw that artist once. Mind you, I have seen many artists live that I do not have a song by on my Ipod. That artist is not represented here. So although the final number of concerts I have seen came to 828 concerts (wow, 828!), the number is actually higher. And there are "bar" bands and artists (like LeCompt and Sam Butera, for example) where I have seen them perform hundreds of sets, but I counted those as "one," although I have seen Lecompt in "concert" also. Any show you see with the four stars (****) means they came damn close to being one of the Top Twenty, but they fell just short. So here's the Twenty. Enjoy and thanks so much for all of your input. And don't sue me if I have a date wrong here and there.

Cox 2018 DEDICATION For Charles and Bené S. Cox, whose unwavering faith in me has always shone through, even in the hardest times. The world is a better place because you both are in it. And for Laura Ingram Ellis: as much as I wanted this dissertation to spring forth from my head fully formed, like Athena from Zeus’s forehead, it did not happen that way. It happened one sentence at a time, some more excruciatingly wrought than others, and you were there for every single sentence. So these sentences I have written especially for you, Laura, with my deepest and most profound gratitude. ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Although it sometimes felt like a solitary process, I wrote this dissertation with the help and support of several different people, all of whom I deeply appreciate. First and foremost on this list is Prof. Charles Hiroshi Garrett, whom I learned so much from and whose patience and wisdom helped shape this project. I am very grateful to committee members Prof. James Borders, Prof. Walter Everett, Prof.
