Welcome to St Luke’s Morton and St Mary’s

Sunday 4 October 2020 – All Age Worship for Harvest Today is our Harvest Festival and Gift Day. We are holding a Harvest Service suitable for all ages in both church buildings (at 10.00am) and online (on our website, our Facebook page and YouTube Channel, any time from 9.00am onwards). Dave Thornton and Gill Clarke are going to be admitted to the office of churchwarden at the Harvest Service at St Luke’s.

Harvest is a time for Gratitude, for giving thanks to God for all the goodness he has shown to us over the past year. Yes, it has been a difficult year in all sorts of ways, but most of us, I hope, can find things to be thankful for.

Harvest is also a time for Generosity. We respond to God’s generosity to us by giving generously to the church, and by bringing tins and packets of food that will go to the Salvation Army Foodbank in to help local families in need. I know from my involvement in St Mary’s School that many families in our community are finding it very difficult to cope, especially this year.

• Please pray for Elspeth Cansdale who is being ordained Deacon today to serve as curate in the Parish of . • Year 6 from East Morton School will be coming into St Luke’s Church on Wednesday afternoon for their Harvest Service at 2.15pm. So this week the church will be open for Private Prayer only from 3.00-4.00pm. • St Mary’s Church will hold its Annual Parochial Church Meeting on Sunday 11 October after the morning service. • If you are a member of St Luke’s and would like a set of the weekly giving envelopes please let Barbara know in the next 2 weeks. • If you would like to receive Prayer for Healing for yourself or for someone else, Tony and Gareth will be happy to pray for/with you in the choir stalls at the end of the Sunday services – or you can let them know of your concerns and they will pray for you in their own prayers.

In order to comply with social distancing rules there is a limit of 24 individuals/households at St Mary’s and 30 individuals/households at St Luke’s.

All our services are available to watch on Facebook and on the YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCpkQlLNK1zq-bQ_6VC6Ut6A

Greeting Welcome in the name of Jesus Christ. The Lord be with you And also with you.

Hymn – We plough the fields and scatter (290 in our hymn books) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ha628Pj_Rns

Introduction We have come to worship God our Father; to give thanks for all that he has given us; to hear more about his love for us; and to offer ourselves to the service of Christ. He is the Creator of the world; He gives us life and breath. He is Lord of the harvest: He gives us food to eat. He is Redeemer of his people: He shows us his love in Jesus.

O God our Father, we bring you our love and praise, and give you thanks for all your goodness, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Special Prayer for Today (The Collect for Harvest) Creator God, you made the goodness of the land, the riches of the sea, and the rhythm of the seasons; as we thank you for the harvest, may we cherish and respect this planet and its peoples, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Setting the Scene

Hymn – It’s Harvest time https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-3JPZcLjVE

Prayer of Confession Let us confess our forgetfulness of the needs of the poor, and repent of the ways in which we waste the resources of the world. God our Father, we are sorry for the times when we have used your gifts carelessly, and acted ungratefully. Hear our prayer, and in your mercy: forgive us and help us. We enjoy the fruits of the harvest, but sometimes forget that you have given them to us. Father, in your mercy: forgive us and help us. We belong to a people who are full and satisfied, but ignore the cry of the hungry. Father, in your mercy: Forgive us and help us. We are thoughtless, and do not care enough for the world you have made. Father, in your mercy: forgive us and help us. We store up goods for ourselves alone, as if there were no God and no heaven. Father, in your mercy: forgive us and help us. Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon us, pardon and deliver us from all our sins, confirm and strengthen us in all goodness, and keep us in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Affirmation of Faith Let us declare our faith in God. We believe in God the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named. We believe in God the Son, who lives in our hearts through faith, and fills us with his love. We believe in God the Holy Spirit, who strengthens us with power from on high. We believe in one God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

Song – When I needed a neighbour (575 in our books) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqM3MWzkSGo Prayers for others and for ourselves

Prayer for the Parishes of Morton and Riddlesden God of Mission, who alone brings growth to your Church, send your Holy Spirit to give vision to our planning, wisdom to our actions, and power to our witness. Help our churches to grow in numbers, in spiritual commitment to you, and in loving friendship and service to our local communities, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Lord’s Prayer As our Saviour has taught us, so we pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

Hymn - Come ye thankful people come (282 in our books) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3n7IUCdqAM

God the Holy Spirit, whose breath fills the whole of creation, help you to bear his fruits of love, joy and peace. And the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen.

Dismissal Go in peace, to love and serve the Lord. In the name of Christ. Amen.
