I am head of the Parasitology Laboratory of ICDDR,B in Dhaka, Bangladesh, have over 25 years of research experience in the field of enteric infections, and have managed longitudinal cohort studies in Bangladesh in collaboration with Dr. Petri of the University of Virginia. Early in my career, I had focused on pathogenesis and diagnosis of amebiasis and recently I have expanded my research on other enteric infections as well as malnutrition and underperformance of vaccines. I am undertaking projects on diagnostics and epidemiology of these enteric infections as well as undertaking projects to understand the biological mechanisms of underperformance of vaccines. My areas of expertise include enteric pathogenesis, diagnostics and assay development, and management of human field studies. I am 2 working on other intestinal parasites such as Cryptosporidiosis, Giardiasis, and Leishmaniasis. For the last 25 years I have been working in the field of enteric infections in collaboration with the University of Virginia and Ecolab Inc. Blacksburg, Virginia. Our work together has led to the development of molecular diagnostics of enteric protozoan parasites. Present Involvement in Research Projects at the icddr, b: 1. Morbidity burden of Cryptosporidiosis and other entro- pathogens in Bangladesh. 2. Validation of rapid diagnostic tests for some enteric protozoan parasites. 3. Drug trial for treatment of enteric protozoan parasites. 4. Epidemiology and treatment of Leishmaniasis and Post-Kala-Azar Dermal leishmaniasis 5. Exploration of the Biologic Basis for Underperformance of Oral Polio and Rotavirus Vaccines in Bangladesh 6. Etiology, Risk Factors and Interactions of Enteric Infections and Malnutrition and the Consequences for Child health and Environmental Enteric Dysfunction. PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES: Society Membership: 1. Member, American Society of Microbiology. 2. Life Member, The Bangladesh Society for Parasitology. 3. Life Member, Korean Society of Parasitology. 4. Member, Alumni Association, LSHTM, London, UK. 5. Life Member, Bangladesh Medical Association. Other professional activities: 1. Member, National Malaria Technical Committee of Bangladesh 2. Member, Library committee of icddr,b 3. Member of Vaccine monitoring committee of icddr,b 4. Member, Research Review Committee of icddr,b Editorial Activities: 1. Reviewer of ASM journals 2. Reviewer of Bangladesh Medical Research Council’s Bulletin 3. Reviewer of Postgraduate Medical Journal 3 4. Reviewer of Lancet 5. Reviewer of Journal of Health, Population and Nutrition HONORS AND AWARD: Award: 1. International Research Scholar Award of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute through its InfectiousDisease and Parasitology Program over the five-year term of September 1, 2000 to August 31, 2005. 2. Travel Grant Award of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene in 1995. 3. Gold Medal from the Sofia Medical Academy, Bulgaria in 1983 for excellent academic performance. Advisees: Supervised research works of 30 MPhil and four MSc and PhD students from the Dhaka University. Courses: Course Director of the course entitled “ ICDDR,B-HHMI Advanced Laboratory training course in Infectious Disease Research”, September 7-23, 2003. Funded by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, USA. Course Director of the course entitled “Laboratory diagnosis of common diarrheal disease agents” held in 2000. Participated as a faculty of various laboratory training course organized by the Training and Education Branch of the ICDDR,B PRESENTATION: Scientific meeting: Attended Annual meetings of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene and many other relevant meetings in the field of Parasitology and Tropical Medicine both at home and abroad. Invited Seminars: Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Medicine, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, USA Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand Named Lectureship: 2003 commemorative fund lecture of the American Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene titled, “ Translating recent diagnostic advances to control parasitic diseases in developing countries” 4 Contribution to Science: 1) I have managed longitudinal cohort studies in Bangladesh for over 25 years and have extensive research experience in the field of enteric infections. In my earlier work the main focus was on the development of molecular tools to identify enteric protozoan parasites endemic in Bangladesh. Our work in collaboration with the University of Virginia, USA and TechLab Inc, Blacksburg, Virginia has led to the development of novel antigen detection tests and qPCR tests for diagnosis of these enteric protozoan parasites. The deployment of validated diagnostic assays is permitting new strategies to be developed to deal with the endemic infectious diseases common in low-income countries 2) Identifying the immune correlates that result in protection of young children from parasitic disease has been one of the focuses of my research. This is leading to insights that will allow us to develop vaccines against the enteric parasites 3) In recent work I have begin to focus on the problem of child malnutrition. This has serious consequences in child development. My work has centered on the increased susceptibility of malnourished children to infectious disease and their diminished immune response to vaccines. 4) One of the goals of my current research is to define the source of environmental enteropathy (intestinal inflammation without overt clinical disease). My studies suggest that this condition is linked to child stunting, malnutrition, oral vaccine failure and the resulting impaired development in children.
