I am head of the Parasitology Laboratory of ICDDR,B in Dhaka, Bangladesh, have over 25 years of research experience in the field of enteric infections, and have managed longitudinal cohort studies in Bangladesh in collaboration with Dr. Petri of the University of Virginia. Early in my career, I had focused on pathogenesis and diagnosis of amebiasis and recently I have expanded my research on other enteric infections as well as malnutrition and underperformance of vaccines. I am undertaking projects on diagnostics and epidemiology of these enteric infections as well as undertaking projects to understand the biological mechanisms of underperformance of vaccines. My areas of expertise include enteric pathogenesis, diagnostics and assay development, and management of human field studies. I am 2 working on other intestinal parasites such as Cryptosporidiosis, Giardiasis, and Leishmaniasis. For the last 25 years I have been working in the field of enteric infections in collaboration with the University of Virginia and Ecolab Inc. Blacksburg, Virginia. Our work together has led to the development of molecular diagnostics of enteric protozoan parasites. Present Involvement in Research Projects at the icddr, b: 1. Morbidity burden of Cryptosporidiosis and other entro- pathogens in Bangladesh. 2. Validation of rapid diagnostic tests for some enteric protozoan parasites. 3. Invited Seminars: Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Medicine, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, USA Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand Named Lectureship: 2003 commemorative fund lecture of the American Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene titled, “ Translating recent diagnostic advances to control parasitic diseases in developing countries” 4 Contribution to Science: 1) I have managed longitudinal cohort studies in Bangladesh for over 25 years and have extensive research experience in the field of enteric infections. In my earlier work the main focus was on the development of molecular tools to identify enteric protozoan parasites endemic in Bangladesh. Our work in collaboration with the University of Virginia, USA and TechLab Inc, Blacksburg, Virginia has led to the development of novel antigen detection tests and qPCR tests for diagnosis of these enteric protozoan parasites. The deployment of validated diagnostic assays is permitting new strategies to be developed to deal with the endemic infectious diseases common in low-income countries 2) Identifying the immune correlates that result in protection of young children from parasitic disease has been one of the focuses of my research. This is leading to insights that will allow us to develop vaccines against the enteric parasites 3) In recent work I have begin to focus on the problem of child malnutrition. This has serious consequences in child development. My work has centered on the increased susceptibility of malnourished children to infectious disease and their diminished immune response to vaccines. 4) One of the goals of my current research is to define the source of environmental enteropathy (intestinal inflammation without overt clinical disease). My studies suggest that this condition is linked to child stunting, malnutrition, oral vaccine failure and the resulting impaired development in children.
