During the course of the century it underwent a major rebuilding, with the Wide Streets Commission demolishing many of the narrow medieval streets and replacing them with large Georgian streets. Among the famous streets to appear following this redesign were Sackville Street (now called O'Connell Street), Dame Street, Westmoreland Street, and D'Olier Street. Five major Georgian squares were also laid out: Rutland Square (now called Parnell Square) and Mountjoy Square to the north, and Merrion Square, Fitzwilliam Square, and Saint Stephen's Green south of the River Liffey.

The subject site is located on the south side of Dublin City, approximately 1km to the south of St. Stephens Green and bounding the Grand Canal to the south. There are a variety of uses evident in this area of Dublin City including extensive residential in the form of two storey terrace to the north of the site on Portobello Harbour and to the north and west, with three storey commercial buildings towards the east and Richmond Row and educational and office use in the adjoining four storey modern construction building with apartment developments to the west. To the east the site bounds a public plaza area, Portobello Square with Protected Structure, Portobello House to the east of the public road.

    15 The Multi-Centred Metropolis: The Social Topography of Eighteenth-Century Dublin EDEL SHERIDAN-QUANTZ It is here necessary to remark, that the eastern side of the City, contiguous to the sea, is almost entirely laid out in elegant streets, for the residence of the gentry: and the western side, though more remote from the sea, and consequently not so conveniently situated for the purposes of commerce, is chiefly inhabited by merchants and mechanicks.1 IN A PORT CITY IT SEEMS RATHER ODD INDEED that the ‘merchants and mechanicks’ should dwell in the landward half of the city, leaving the area towards the coast to the ‘gentry’. As the following demonstrates, Dublin’s east–west social gradient as described in eighteenth-century and early nineteenth-century accounts, of which a typical sample is given above, was not quite as simple as many contemporaries liked to claim. The eastern and western sectors were fragmented and subdivided by the physical barrier of the River Liffey, so that different neighbourhood characters and subcentres of social and economic activity developed, not only in the eastern and western halves of the city but also within these sectors. With the Restoration of the monarchy in England and the consequent re-establishment of the Irish parliament in Dublin, the city began to expand rapidly again. Dublin in the eighteenth century was a capital city, nominally of a semi- autonomous kingdom, de facto of a state with effective colonial status subject to the English throne; nevertheless, the city had all the associated administrative, legal, cul- tural and economic functions of a capital.

Some separated children /unaccompanied minors have refugee status and others have gone through the asylum process but have been refused asylum. Some young people do not fall into either category but are still referred to as unaccompanied minors/separated children. The project involved the participation of 35 separated children living in the Dublin area. Separated children are defined by the Separated Children in Europe Programme as “children under 18 years of age who are outside their country of origin and separated from both parents, or previous/ legal customary primary care giver”. The project ran from January 2009 to October 2009 and the young people worked on the project intensively during their summer holidays.
