    Federation of State Medical Boards Report of the Nominating Committee January 20, 2021 The Nominating Committee met on Wednesday, January 20, 2021 via videoconference at 3:00 pm CST. FSMB Immediate Past Chair Scott Steingard, DO serves as Chair of the Committee. Dr. Steingard expressed his deep gratitude for the Committee’s dedication and emphasized the significance of their work in selecting highly qualified candidates for the elected office positions in the midst of a global pandemic. The Committee reviewed all nomination materials submitted; provided verbal reports of their one-on- one nominee interviews; and focused on the importance of selecting candidates who fulfill the qualifications for FSMB leadership positions as defined in the Committee’s charge. The Committee addressed methods to enhance the process of soliciting quality candidates in the future. Following thoughtful and prudent deliberation throughout the vetting process, the Nominating Committee unanimously approved the following roster of candidates: Chair-elect – 1 Board Member Fellow, to be elected for three years: a one-year term as Chair-elect; a one-year term as Chair; and a one-year term as Immediate Past Chair Assists the Chair in the discharge of the Chair’s duties and performs the duties of the Chair at the Chair’s request or, in the event of the Chair’s temporary absence or incapacitation, at the request of the Board of Directors.

    2017 ANNUAL REPORT The National Board of Medical Examiners® (NBME) is an independent, not-for-profit organization that provides high-quality examinations for the health professions. Protection of the health of the public through state-of-the-art assessment of health professionals is the mission of the NBME, along with a major commitment to research and development in evaluation and measurement. The NBME was founded in 1915 because of the need for a voluntary, nationwide examination that medical licensing authorities could accept as the standard by which to judge candidates for medical licensure. Since that time, it has continued without interruption to provide high-quality examinations for this purpose and has become a model and a resource of international stature in testing methodologies and evaluation in medicine. OUR MISSION To protect the health of the public through state-of-the art assessment of health professionals.     www.medscape.com Students Urge Step 1 Fixes, Physician Leaders Reply With Insult Alicia Ault January 17, 2019 The response of physician leaders to a student proposal to overhaul Step 1 of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) seems to indicate a generational divide in the medical community. Step 1, which medical students take after the second year of undergraduate studies, and which plays a pivotal role in residency selection, has become such a dreaded event that thousands of memes have been created expressing the anxiety that goes along with studying for and taking the test. It has also given rise to a test-prep industry that gobbles up time and money — for those who have the financial resources — and, increasingly, a mindset that studying for Step 1 is more important than attending medical school classes. The pressure to succeed on Step 1 "has gotten much worse" in recent years, said Jed Wolpaw, MD, MEd, assistant professor and residency program director at the Johns Hopkins Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. It was bad enough a decade or so ago when he was taking the exam, he told Medscape Medical News. Now, "it is really all-consuming," with students disappearing for months while they prepare. That hyper-charged environment is what led a group of medical students and a resident to write an article in Academic Medicine proposing to eliminate numerical scoring on Step 1 and make it pass/fail. The article, and a patronizing response, published in the same journal, by Peter Katsufrakis, MD, MBA, president and CEO of the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) and Humayun Chaudhry, DO, MS, president and CEO of the Federation of State Medical Boards, ignited a firestorm on Twitter.

(Sept. 23, 2016) – Humayun Chaudhry, DO, MACP, President and CEO of the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB), was installed as Chair of the International Association of Medical Regulatory Authorities (IAMRA) during the 12th International Conference on Medical Regulation this week in Melbourne, Australia. IAMRA provides a biennial international forum for medical regulators to share best practices in achieving their mandate to protect, promote and maintain the health and safety of the public by ensuring proper standards for the profession of medicine. The organization has 104 member organizations in 46 countries. Dr. Chaudhry, who joined the FSMB in 2009 and remains in that role, will serve a two- year term as IAMRA’s Chair from 2016-2018. He served as the organization’s Chair- elect from 2014-2016. Dr. Chaudhry, 50, graduated from New York University, the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine and Harvard School of Public Health. Big insurers are paving the way for patients to be seen by their provider online for a variety of ailments that would ordinarily require a trip to their provider's office. Margaret Flinter: Well, the expansion of telemedicine's getting a big boost from the insurance industry. Etna currently allows for some three million e-visits with clinicians online, and that number is expected to grow to eight million in the coming year. And WellPoint, another big insurer, anticipates four million e-visits in the coming year. Mark Masselli: It makes good business sense for them, because it saves money. And for patients faced with higher and higher deductibles and copays it's more affordable for them, as well. A trip to the emergency room could cost thousands of dollars or more. A typical Teladoc consult is 50 dollars. Not to mention the convenience for the patient as well. Margaret Flinter: Well, there are some urging that we move into this realm with caution.
