The neglect that Rutgers students face due to the lack of care from Rutgers Counseling and Psychiatric Services (CAPS) has reached an overwhelming level. As a public health major but also as a part of the Rutgers community myself, I truly appreciate your concern for the wellbeing of the undergraduate population, especially in regards to your role as the Vice Chancellor for Health and Wellness. As discussed in the presentation, much of the psychiatric dilemmas that the average college student face today are great, but the challenges universities face to help them can be even greater. At Rutgers, I have found that many of the methods that the Counseling and Psychiatric Services executes can have serious deficiencies. For many students, CAPS does not provide mental aid, and rather lacks necessary accessibility and quality of care. Many students find it extremely difficult to find an adequate date for an appointment, and when they finally get to a service center, they are treated with virtually the same regimen as their peers, with no differentiation between each patient. -

The April Meeting in New York
THE APRIL MEETING IN NEW YORK The five hundred fifty-seventh meeting of the American Mathe matical Society was held on Thursday through Saturday, April 23- 25, 1959 at the Hotel New Yorker in New York, New York. About 600 persons attended, including 420 members of the Society. There was a Symposium on Nuclear Reactor Theory, sponsored by the Society with the financial aid of the Office of Ordnance Re search, with sessions on Thursday morning and afternoon and Friday morning and afternoon. The program committee consisted of Profes sor E. P. Wigner, Chairman, and Professor Garrett Birkhoff, Dr. H. L. Garabedian, Dr. S. M. Ulam, and Dr. J. E. Wilkins. The papers presented at the Symposium are to be published by the Society under the editorship of Professors Birkhoff and Wigner as volume 11 in The Proceedings of the Symposia in Applied Mathematics. There was a Symposium on Finite Groups, sponsored by the Soci ety with the financial aid of Project FOCUS of the Institute for Defense Analyses, with sessions on Thursday morning and afternoon and Friday morning. The program committee consisted of Professor A. A. Albert, Chairman, Professors Walter Feit, Marshall Hall, I. N. Herstein, and Irving Kaplansky. The papers presented at the Sym posium are to be published by the Society as a book under the editor ship of Professors Albert and Kaplansky. By invitation of the Committee to Select Hour Speakers for East ern Sectional Meetings, Professor Jun-ichi Igusa of The Johns Hop kins University delivered an address entitled On the Kroneckerian model for elliptic modular functions on Saturday morning. -

JAZZ WRITING? I am one of Mr. Turley's "few people" who follow The New Yorker and are jazz lovers, and I find in Whitney Bal- liett's writing some of the sharpest and best jazz criticism in the field. He has not been duped with "funk" in its pseudo-gospel hard-boppish world, or- with the banal playing and writing of some of the "cool school" Californians. He does believe, and rightly so, that a fine jazz performance erases the bound• aries of jazz "movements" or fads. He seems to be able to spot insincerity in any phalanx of jazz musicians. And he has yet to be blinded by the name of a "great"; his recent column on Bil- lie Holiday is the most clear-headed analysis I have seen, free of the fan- magazine hero-worship which seems to have been the order of the day in the trade. It is true that a great singer has passed away, but it does the late Miss Holiday's reputation no good not to ad• LETTERS mit that some of her later efforts were (dare I say it?) not up to her earlier work in quality. But I digress. In Mr. Balliett's case, his ability as a critic is added to his admitted "skill with words" (Turley). He is making a sincere effort to write rather than play jazz; to improvise with words,, rather than notes. A jazz fan, in order to "dig" a given solo, unwittingly knows a little about the equipment: the tune being improvised to, the chord struc• ture, the mechanics of the instrument, etc. -
