Message from The Portland Foundation

Dear Friends,

The state of Indiana celebrated its 200th birthday in 2016. The Portland Foundation and all of Jay County joined the rest of the state in honoring the past by having a party on September 27 when the Bicentennial Torch Relay passed through the community.

The Portland Foundation honors the past by carrying out the philanthropic wishes of the many donors who have given to the Foundation since it was established December 17, 1951 when John Jaqua, Sr., Hugh Ronald, Jr. and Haynes Starbuck saw the need to create an organization that was designed to assist in the community’s future growth while serving as a vehicle for community philanthropy. While honoring the past the Foundation simultaneously prepares for the future by working to enhance the quality of life in Jay County by building community endowment, awarding grants, and providing leadership on key community issues.

The board and staff are blessed to be able to serve the community by carrying out the Foundation’s mission. Each of us thanks you for trusting us with carrying out your philanthropic legacy for Jay County.

With Gratitude,

Patrick W. Bennett Douglas L. Inman President, Board of Trustees Executive Director

Honoring the Past and Preparing for the Future 1 THE PORTLAND FOUNDATION

On December 11, 2016, the State of Indiana celebrated its 200th birthday. Each county was charged with creating a legacy project that honored one of four pillars: Nature, Youth & Education, Community Involvement and Historical Celebration. Jay County focused on the Community Involvement pillar through a community quilt project, which shined a spotlight on area businesses.

Each of the ninety-two counties in the state participated in a Bicentennial Torch Relay. The torch began its journey in Corydon (the first state capital) on September 9 and finished its trek across the state in Indianapolis on October 15. On September 27, the torch made its way through Jay County where 20 local citizens carried the torch from the Jay County/Randolph County line to the Jay County Fairgrounds. Doug Inman, The Portland Foundation’s Executive Director, was one of the torchbearers. Once the torch arrived at the fairgrounds a community hog roast was held, where approximately 2,000 people enjoyed food and fellowship. The event culminated with a Bicentennial celebration ceremony and fireworks.

Happy Birthday, Indiana!
