Media Release: Grand Final Fever Hits Sydney Media Release 26 September, 2016 GRAND FINAL FEVER HITS SYDNEY A jam-packed four days of special NRL events and experiences awaits NRL fans in Sydney over the long weekend. It’s Grand Final weekend and Sydney is set to hit fever pitch with four days of football-fantastic events and experiences, as the long weekend intersects with NRL’s biggest day of the season. With the Cronulla Sharks taking on the Melbourne Storm in the 2016 NRL Telstra Premiership Grand Final on Sunday October 2 at ANZ Stadium, fans of both teams and those who want to this year's best of best in Rugby League are encouraged to snap up their tickets now and plan their visit to Sydney to take in all of the pre-game activity on offer. Fans can meet their NRL heroes in person at the Sydney Opera House and be part of the audience for the broadcast of NRL360, or make the most of Grand Final day by arriving early to ANZ Stadium for all the precinct activity. Each of the bets struck were on contingencies involving the winner of the 2018 National Rugby League (NRL) grand final and/or the winner of the 2018 Australian Football League (AFL) grand final and the winner of the 2018 Clive Churchill Medal (man-of-the match in the NRL grand final). 3. The complainant advised the Commission that he became aware in early August 2018 that Sportsbet was no longer offering a multi bet betting market that involved the winner of the Clive Churchill Medal, however as the 16 bets that he had placed prior to this time remained active in his Sportsbet betting account, he believed that the 16 bets he had placed were not affected. Nonetheless, when the complainant accessed his betting account on 31 August 2018, he saw that Sportsbet had voided all 16 of the bets that had been struck.

E 1,106,000 Australians 14+ support the Brisbane Broncos, almost three times as many as support the North Queensland Cowboys (389,000). But the Cowboys’ fan-base is much more gender neutral, with women making up 49% compared with just 40% of the Broncos’. In terms of club spirit, the teams are closely matched: slightly more Cowboys supporters attended a match (22% vs 19%), but Broncos fans are more likely to be a financial member of their club (5% vs 4%) or to play the sport themselves (4% vs 3%). The two sides share virtually the same proportions of fans that watch rugby matches on TV (80-81%) or bet on the sport this past year (3%). When deciding whose house to watch the game at, consider this: Cowboys supporters are more likely to have a swimming pool (21% vs 16%) but more Broncos fans have a barbecue (71% vs 66%). Broncos supporters are more likely to have been overseas in the past year (24% vs 21%), donate an average $40 more per year to charity, and spend $19 more going out during the week (although Cowboys supporters spend $8 more on at-home entertainment).     Geoff's commentary on the NRL Grand Final Firstly, the team in the purple shorts and the big V on their shirt, known as the Melbourne Storm, were really big guys with thighs as large as tree trunks. They were much heavier than their opponents, the Penrith Panthers, dressed in black with a red OAK on their chest. I wondered was OAK meant to be 'One of A Kind' ?. We would soon find out! In the first half the purple shorts cut their way through their opponents like rhinos charging into a swamp. It was sheer danger to stand in their way. I felt sorry that the men in black were pitted against this ruthless team in purple shorts. A knee to the neck and a headlock and dump twist was all part of the punishment inflicted on the guys in black. I murmured, "call it off - this is murder". At times the umpire threw his arms up into the air in desperation and made the sign of a square hole. I could not see what this was about, oh yes, everyone stopped as they played a replay which magnified this rare achievement called 'TRY'. Then both teams reached an armistice, the battle was over for a minute or two while the judges examined the film footage, backwards and forwards several times and then 'NO TRY' was announced. After this disappointment, both teams then joined together in a ring and from somewhere in the circle the ball magically popped out and the battle raged again. Players were being dumped and flattened, but this was all part of the game - there did not appear to be any retribution.

They were originally written with the hope to have them included in Steve Haddan’s book “Our Game” covering the history of the Brisbane Rugby League up to 1987. Due to the costs of adding extra pages they were not included. The 3 appendices included in this document include: • The BRL competition from 1988 to 1997 (the last 2 years were just a final series) • The Queensland Cup from 1996 to the present (2019) • A list of all grand final scores from 1909 to the present for the BRL, State League, Queensland Cup and the State Championship as well as a listing of the years that each club has won a premiership. 2 APPENDIX ONE THE POST BRONCOS BRISBANE RUGBY LEAGUE COMPETITION When the Brisbane Broncos and the Gold Coast Giants entered the NSWRL competition in 1988 it marked a point of no return for the Brisbane Rugby League competition. The BRL went from being a top tier to a second tier competition much to the disappointment of many diehard Queensland rugby league fans. Before the entry of the Brisbane Broncos the top national talent was shared between the Brisbane and Sydney competitions with more playing in the Sydney competition thanks to the bigger money offered by clubs that could benefit from poker machine profits which weren't introduced in Queensland until 1992.

    The Newtown District Rugby League Football Club It's Sunday September 30 - or, for the sports-mad, NRL grand final day - and I'm making my way to the Olympic Stadium in Homebush to cover my first ever decider for Rugby League Week magazine. It's a radiant Autumn day but a wintry chill lingers in the air, especially in the cavernous bowels of the 84,000-seat monolith. I reach my seat in time to see the conclusion of the curtain raiser - the NSW Cup grand final - where the Newtown Jets have beaten the Balmain Tigers. Daniel Mortimer hoists the reserve grade premiership trophy. 1 "It's great for this club. You hear all the stories about how they didn't have a team for seven years but the board kept showing up to meetings … the fans have stuck in there, too. They've been through a lot of ups and downs so it's great for them," Daniel Mortimer, Newtown captain. To say the history of the Newtown District Rugby League Football Club has had “a lot of ups and downs” is an understatement. Founded in Sydney's industrial inner-west on January 14 1908, Australia's second oldest rugby league club staved off the threat of merger or extinction for the majority of its 76-year stint in the top division, before the League finally axed the Bluebags in 1983. In 1990, the Jets returned to the playing field in the amateur Metropolitan Cup, and after a decade in park footy purgatory, re-entered the semi-professional ranks in 2000 as a feeder team to NRL outfit the Auckland Warriors before switching allegiances to the Sydney Roosters in 2006 (Whiticker & Collis 2004; Whiticker & Collis 2011).

All the players were present and spent the time signing auotgraphs, playing backyard league and even tug-o-war with the league heroes. A great game awaits the crowd on Friday.
