Granted to Juan José Dominguez for grazing cattle in 1784, the rancho at one point spanned 75,000 acres, from current-day San Pedro to Compton, Manhattan Beach to Long Beach and Paramount. Te need for a campus in the South Bay region of Los Angeles County became apparent in the late 1950s, fueled by the growth of the aerospace industry and the post-World War II baby boom. In response, the California State Legislature authorized the establishment of South Bay State College, and Governor Edmund G. (Pat) Brown signed it into law on April 29, 1960. Planning for the college began in 1961 with the selection of Leo F. Cain as the frst president. Te following year, prominent L.A. architect A. Quincy Jones was chosen to design the campus. With Palos Verdes as their preferred location, trustees of the California State College system renamed the college California State College at Palos Verdes in 1963, and President Cain and a planning committee began developing a dual-major “small college” interdisciplinary curriculum, drafting a master plan, and hiring an administration, staf and faculty. Despite a decision on a permanent home—sites in Torrance, Fox Hills in Culver City, and former Rancho San Pedro land known as Dominguez Hills were under consideration—CSC Palos Verdes opened its frst fall quarter in a California Federal Savings Bank in Rolling Hills Estates in fall 1965. Te schedule of classes consisted of one page ofering about 10 classes. Between 40 and 50 students were taught by 11 faculty members. Te fedgling college began during a turbulent time for Los Angeles. For six days that August, the Watts Rebellion devastated a community, bringing longstanding grievances and inequities to light. During a tour of Watts, Gov. Brown asked to see the Dominguez Hills site just over fve miles to the south. He is quoted as saying the location would provide greater access to higher education for the region’s minority population. Soon after, the trustees approved purchase of the land and renamed the college yet again. From its beginnings to today, California State University, Dominguez Hills has prided itself on being a diverse community of learners and educators committed to changing lives and communities for the better. Te university provides a wide range of outstanding academic programs and opportunities to approximately 15,000 students annually. Today, nearly 50 years since its frst commencement with four graduates, the university confers more than 4,000 degrees annually and counts more than 95,000 individuals as alumni. Our graduates leave with the skills that enable them to become leaders and productive citizens of a diverse and global society. 7 COLLEGE OF NATURAL AND BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES BEHAVIORAL AND NATURAL OF COLLEGE 8 PLATFORM PARTY COLLEGE OF NATURAL AND BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES KEYNOTE SPEAKER Te Honorable Isadore Hall, III California State Senator CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, DOMINGUEZ HILLS Dr. Willie J. Most specifically, minimal information is related to adult learning that evolves as a result of popular culture influences. Popular culture promotes cultures of learning and teaches and facilitates a more informed literate citizenry. As a form of popular culture, movies inform adults about race, class, and gender issues. The movie, "Waiting to Exhale," challenges adult audiences to think critically about race, class, and gender experiences as they occur in the social context and examine problems that foster intergroup and community misunderstandings. It explores the complex themes of race, class, and gender and the quest for loving adult relationships amid the struggle to be successful African American women.

  • Using Film to Teach Psychology: a Resource of Film Study Guides
USING FILM TO TEACH PSYCHOLOGY: A RESOURCE OF FILM STUDY GUIDES Elizabeth M. Nelson, Christian Brothers University (2002 Instructional Resource Award Recipient) Overview This 106-page resource offers instructors tools for using films to enhance their instruction. Student evaluations consistently indicate that films help them learn the topics, provide an alternative to traditional lectures, and give them a different point of view. However, students also say they do not like to view films if they do not understand the relevancy of the film to the course material. This resource gives teachers of psychology additional tools for using film, such as tested study guides, sample syllabi, student papers, references, and Internet resources. The film study guides contained in this resource have been used in a variety of psychology classes, and may be applicable to a variety of other courses. • BAM Presents Black 90S: a Turning Point in American Cinema, May 3—22, an Exploration of a Pivotal Era for Black Filmmakers
BAM presents Black 90s: A Turning Point in American Cinema, May 3—22, an exploration of a pivotal era for black filmmakers March 29, 2019/Brooklyn, NY—From Friday, May 3 through Wednesday, May 22, BAM presents Black 90s: A Turning Point in American Cinema, a nearly three week-long program of films, both low-budget art films and classic blockbusters, from an era of explosive creativity and newfound studio support for black filmmakers. The 1990s witnessed a historic number of films made by African-American directors who blazed new aesthetic pathways and who created touchstone works that continue to inspire contemporary filmmakers. Bringing together popular hits and unsung gems, this expansive series surveys the rich variety of genres and styles—from indie drama to comedy to romance to noir to queer cinema—upon which black filmmakers left their mark, making crucial strides in a fight for more complex representation that continues today. The series opens with a focus on the 1990s work of trailblazing filmmakers from the LA Rebellion, a generation of artists who studied at UCLA and created a black alternative to classical Hollywood. Opening night kicks off with Charles Burnett’s To Sleep with Anger (1990), a poetic realist masterpiece that weaves strains of black folklore, surrealism, and macabre comedy, with a mesmerizing performance by Danny Glover. It screens with a new 35mm print of Burnett’s short film When It Rains (1995), and will be followed by a Q&A with Burnett. Other films include Zeinabu Irene Davis’ innovative, century-spanning parallel romances in Compensation (1999); LA Rebellion leader Haile Gerima’s time-traveling portrait of the horrors of slavery and the power of revolt, Sankofa (1993); and Julie Dash’s dreamy evocation of early-20th-century Gullah life and black womanhood, Daughters of the Dust (1991).

She is a singer’s singer who has influenced countless other vocalists female and male. Music historians cite Whitney’s record-setting achievements: the only artist to chart seven consecutive #1 Billboard Hot 100 hits (“Saving All My Love For You,” “How Will I Know,” “Greatest Love Of All,” “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me),” “Didn’t We Almost Have It All,” “So Emotional,” and “Where Do Broken Hearts Go”); the first female artist to enter the Billboard 200 album chart at #1 (her second album, Whitney, 1987); and the only artist with eight consecutive multi-platinum albums (Whitney Houston, Whitney, I’m Your Baby Tonight, The Bodyguard, Waiting To Exhale , and The Preacher’s Wife soundtracks; My Love Is Your Love and Whitney: The Greatest Hits). In fact, The Bodyguard soundtrack is one of the top 5 biggest-selling albums of all-time (at 18x-platinum in the U.S. alone), and Whitney’s career-defining version of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” is the biggest-selling single of all time by a female artist (at 8x-platinum for physical and digital in the U.S. alone). Born into a musical family on August 9, 1963, in Newark, New Jersey, Whitney’s success might’ve been foretold.
