  • The Formation of Temporary Communities in Anime Fandom: a Story of Bottom-Up Globalization ______
THE FORMATION OF TEMPORARY COMMUNITIES IN ANIME FANDOM: A STORY OF BOTTOM-UP GLOBALIZATION ____________________________________ A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of California State University, Fullerton ____________________________________ In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in Geography ____________________________________ By Cynthia R. Davis Thesis Committee Approval: Mark Drayse, Department of Geography & the Environment, Chair Jonathan Taylor, Department of Geography & the Environment Zia Salim, Department of Geography & the Environment Summer, 2017 ABSTRACT Japanese animation, commonly referred to as anime, has earned a strong foothold in the American entertainment industry over the last few decades. Anime is known by many to be a more mature option for animation fans since Western animation has typically been sanitized to be “kid-friendly.” This thesis explores how this came to be, by exploring the following questions: (1) What were the differences in the development and perception of the animation industries in Japan and the United States? (2) Why/how did people in the United States take such interest in anime? (3) What is the role of anime conventions within the anime fandom community, both historically and in the present? These questions were answered with a mix of historical research, mapping, and interviews that were conducted in 2015 at Anime Expo, North America’s largest anime convention. This thesis concludes that anime would not have succeeded as it has in the United States without the heavy involvement of domestic animation fans. Fans created networks, clubs, and conventions that allowed for the exchange of information on anime, before Japanese companies started to officially release anime titles for distribution in the United States.

They began working in the early 1900s, at the same time as Walt Disney, but while Disney went on to become a household name, the Fleischers are barely remembered. Our film will change this, introducing a wide national audience to a family of brothers – Max, Dave, Lou, Joe, and Charlie – who created Fleischer Studios and a roster of animated characters who reflected the rough and tumble sensibilities of their own Jewish immigrant neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York. “The Fleischer story involves the glory of American Jazz culture, union brawls on Broadway, gangsters, sex, and southern segregation,” says advisor Tom Sito. The three performances that I examine are: George M. Cohan’s production of Little Johnny ii Jones (1904), Eleanor Powell’s “Tribute to Bill Robinson” in Honolulu (1939), and Terry- Toons’ cartoon, “The Dancing Shoes” (1949). These performances share an obvious move away from the use of blackface makeup within a minstrel context, and a move towards the masked enjoyment in “black culture” as it contributes to the development of a uniquely American form of entertainment. In bringing these three disparate performances into dialogue I illuminate the many ways in which American entertainment has been built upon an Africanist aesthetic at the same time it has generally disparaged the black body.

This edition includes information on 725 elephants, 78 more than the last edition which was published in 2007. 13 of these animals were captive born. The remaining 65 additional elephants were added because we received historical animal records that validated their existence. Of the 725 elephants in the Studbook, 269 (53.216) are living and 145 (31.114) are currently housed in AZA facilities. The “Lost To Follow Up” section lists 9 male and 60 female elephants whose current location is unknown to us. The “Undocumented” section lists 31 male and 203 female elephants that we believe are individuals who existed in North America at one time, however, we lack any official supporting documentation to give them official studbook numbers. There is a chance that some of these elephants already have studbook numbers under different house names, it is also likely that some of the undocumented elephants are duplicates of one another. It is important that we have appropriate supporting documentation to avoid assigning more than one studbook number to the same elephant.

  • Comics and Cartoons As Channels to Transform Classroom Practices
Pramana Research Journal ISSN NO: 2249-2976 COMICS AND CARTOONS AS CHANNELS TO TRANSFORM CLASSROOM PRACTICES A.KAMESWARI Research Scholar (Ph.D.) JNTU, Ananthpur. [email protected] Abstract Introduction: Comics are loved and enjoyed by all the children. Use of comics in the classroom to teach will make the teaching interesting, easy and captivating. Teaching through comics enhances the process of quick learning, recollection and memorizing. Student-participation will be amplified. Scope for pair-work and group- work will be improved. It is like mixing vegetables in a cake batter or decorating a cake with raisins. In a similar way, a teacher can use comics in a class. For higher levels, there are comic books on a specific character. Example: Chatrapati Shivaji. After reading the Amar Chitra Katha comics about Shivaji, the teacher can ask the class to analyse the situations, circumstances and actions etc. It also leads to greater exposure to words and in other sense helps in vocabulary acquisition. It also boosts their speaking competence. As all of us know, student motivation is the requirement for reading comprehension. Motivating students with small texts that interest them leads to improve reading comprehension. After this exercise and analysis, students easily read and able to analyse the text-book related topics. Many character traits can be discussed whether it is about Sindbad or Tintin. Not only Indian cartoons, they can be introduced to Foreign cartoons slowly. Sequencing, vocabulary development etc. skills can be improved among young learners. Studying comic books will definitely help in connecting students to other works of literature, literary analysis and the skills they require for deeper comprehension.

Winkler Productions Directed and written by Walt Disney. Animated by Ub Iwerks, Rollin Ham Hamilton, Thurston Harper, Hugh Harman, & Rudolf Ising. Produced by Margaret J. Winkler With Margie Gay as Alice. Music and effects soundtrack added by Raytone Productions, 1930 Left to protect Alice’s house, Julius the cat soon falls into a vat of home-brew liquor in the basement and drinks himself into oblivion. The rats, free to play, entertain themselves by dancing, playing phonograph records, cavorting with the player piano, and using the bathtub for a swimming pool. Soon the party gets completely out of control. (Why Alice was brewing alcohol in her basement remains an open question.) “Speaking of his studio in later years, Disney was fond of saying that ‘it all started with a little mouse’ – but in fact the foundation was laid in 1924 by a little girl.” – Merritt & Kaufman, Walt in Wonderland Young Walt Disney broke into the movie business in Kansas City, as an illustrator for a company that produced glass slides and advertising shorts for theaters. Along with his buddy Fred Harman, he struck out on his own, hoping to jump-start their new company with a partly-animated comical short called Laugh-O-Grams, produced for the influential local theater owner, Frank L. Newman. This was successful enough that they were able to secure funding to hire additional animators, including now- legendary pioneers Ubbe “Ub” Iwerks, Hugh Harman, Rudolph Ising, and Friz Freleng.

Max fleischer bimbo the dog Continue Hey, everybody, there's an old saying: A dog is a man's best friend. It's true. Dogs are loving and caring and oh-so loyal. They know if you're sad and because they love to play, they can always make you happy. Dogs are everything a good friend should be. I think a dog is a girl's best friend, too - at least mine. I simply love Pudgy. And have you ever noticed that my girlfriend Bimbo is always putting on the dog when he steps out with moi? And so should he. I always say every dog wants his day. So when you have great style, flaunt it! It will get you noticed – and who knows how far you can go to realize your dreams?!? Hot diggety dog! Tee hee. You wonder why all this talk about dogs!?! Well, my family has just mounted a wonderful exhibition on their website about all the wonderful dogs that have been part of our history at Fleischer Studios. From the nameless dog, who spoke the first ever synchronized words in animation history to my Uncle Max's dog, Bimbo, to the heartwarming story, I told you about the real life puppy in Chicago named Betty Boop, this exciting new exhibition has one of the earliest existing examples of Max Fleischer's animation, never-seen-before home movie footage, and just a wealth of cool information about the dogs that had roles in many of my cartoons and throughout my family's storied history.
