Atkins on behalf of the British Ministry of Defence in 1994, released in January 1995, into the impact on the marine and terrestrial environment of the test-firing of depleted uranium shells in the United Kingdom into the Solway Firth (from the Dundrennan range near Kirkcudbright, in Scotland) and at Eskmeals (Cumbria, in England)? Is it aware of any similar survey conducted by France into its depleted uranium testing site at Granat? Joint answer to Written Questions E-0884/01, E-0979/01, E-0980/01 and E-0981/01 given by Mrs Wallström on behalf of the Commission (5 June 2001) Test ranges of depleted uranium munitions may be either terrestrial or in a marine environment. In the case of marine test ranges, the Commission stated on several occasions most recently in its reply to Oral Question H-0055/01 by Mrs Kratsa-Tsagaropoulou during question time at Parliament’s February 2001 part-session (1) that no contamination of the marine environment which could be distinguished from naturally occurring uranium concentrations would result from this activity. It is the Commission’s understanding that this issue has so far not been addressed under the Oslo-Paris (OSPAR) Convention..

MURPHY EXECUTIVE SUMMARY An airborne gamma ray survey was conducted for the Scottish Office Environment Department of coastal and inland parts of SW Scotland to define existing background levels, to locate features worthy of further attention, and to demonstrate the emergency response capabilities of radiometric methods. Coastal areas were surveyed with 500 m line spacing. Inland areas were specified to 2 km line spacing, however it was possible to achieve 1 km line spacing in the majority of the inland zone. Fieldwork was conducted between the 1st and 16th February 1993. A total of over 17,000 gamma ray spectra were recorded, using a 16 litre NaI spectrometer mounted in a helicopter flying at 50-75m ground clearance and 120kph. A total area of 3650 km2 was surveyed in 41.6 flying hours, from roughly 4370 line kilometres. The data were reduced in the field using standard SURRC procedures for background subtraction, stripping of spectral interferences, altitude correction, and calibration. Preliminary maps of the distribution of 137Cs, 40K, 214Bi, 208Tl, and estimated ground level gamma dose rate were produced during the fieldwork period using working calibration values derived from previous surveys.
