This was the largest survey of its kind ever by any corporate, academic, or government entity. I agreed to take on this project as a part-time IBM employee with the understanding that I could use the data in future academic research. Support provided by IBM for survey administration was about $300,000.

FHSS Work and Family Start-Up Funds (1999-2001). Funds were used to purchase research materials and computer programs, as well as to develop networking relationships with academic leaders of the work and family field ($3,500).

Oversaw development and analysis of a survey to explore the work and personal/family needs of IBM employees in Europe. 25% stratified sample of IBMers in 11 European countries, in 11 languages. Project manager to develop, administer, and analyze a survey to explore the work and personal/family needs of IBM employees. 9% random sample of IBMers in the United States, 247 data points, 7586 respondents, 19880 written comments. Value of IBM support was about $100,000.

USU/Childtrends National Survey of Children (NSC) Project (1992-1995). Research assistant to Brent C. Miller for exploration of the antecedents to adolescent sexual intercourse. Examined longitudinal and reciprocal effects of religious and sexual activity. This was Brent Miller’s project and funding was approximately $300,000.

B. COURSES DEVELOPED

HFL 100/SFL 205 – Home and Family Living (2004). Shirley Klein and I developed this as the initial survey course for the Home and Family Living program.

MFHD 542 – Work and Family (2003). In this class I personally mentor MFHD graduate students in the research process and guide them in undertaking a research project. Altogether 32 students from this class have published 6 peer-reviewed articles, presented at 18 scholarly conferences, and have published 1 scholarly book chapter.

MFHD/HFL/SFL 370 – Work, Family and Community (2000, 2009). Alan Hawkins and I originally developed HFL 370 Families in Communities in 2000. It focused on the interface between the home and its external contexts (e.g., Family and Religion, Family E. Jeffrey Hill Curriculum Vitae –January 2020 Page - 31

and Schools, Family and Health, Family and Media, etc.) It has been an elective course for all the SFL majors and emphases as well as the SFL minor. It also fulfills a requirement for the Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE). In 2009 I significantly upgraded this course to leverage my Work and Family research into this 300-level undergraduate class. We still cover the other contexts, but now spend about half the time on Work and Family.

MBA 549r/MFHD 542/MFHD 590/ORG B 660R – Work and Family (2000). I created this course to prepare future managers to effectively deal with work/family issues in the workplace and to prepare present and future parents to effectively deal with work/family issues in the home. It has been very well received in the Marriott School of Management.

III. SERVICE

PROFESSIONAL SERVICE

A. SERVICE IN DISCIPLINARY PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS.

Work and Family Researchers Network (WFRN) 2011-present. I was invited to be a founding member of this organization that hopes to bring work-family researchers from many disciplines together. The first conference was held June 2012 and more than 750 work-family researchers attended and presented. BYU was a co-sponsor of the organization. I presented a paper at the conference, participated in two roundtables, was a discussant, and participated on a panel of distinguished researchers and practioners of reduced-hours work arrangements. In 2014 I served as a discussant on a session about mobile work and was asked to chair the nomination committee for officers. I was nominated to run for president of WFRN in 2015 but lost the election. I was appointed to the board of directors in 2015.

National Council on Family Relations (NCFR) 1990-present. I have been active in NCFR for more 29 years. I have presented dozens papers and posters. I have reviewed a plethora of conference submissions. I have served in the leadership of several focus groups. I ran for the Policy Section chair but lost. I collaborated with NCFR’s Cindy Winter and Michael Benjamin to organize and participate in the first Work-Life Summit in 2000 in Minneapolis, MN. I was on the steering committee for the 2001 Work-Life Summit in Rochester, NY, the 2002 Work-Life Summit in Houston, TX, and the 2003 Work-Life Summit in Vancouver, BC. I successfully nominated Terry Olson to win the Osborne Teaching Award in 2011. I have been a supporter of the Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE) program. I designed a course at BYU (SFL 370) to meet one of the requirements for this designation.

American Psychological Association (APA) 1992-present. Several of my students and I have presented at the APA national conferences frequently. I played a predominant role in the APA: Presidential Initiative on Work/Family Synthesis. I was selected by APA president Diane F. Halpern because of my background with flexible work to serve on this panel to make data-based recommendations about work and family that were disseminated to legislators, businesses, and families (2003-2004).

Society of Industrial and Organizational Psychologists (SIOP) 1992-present. The SIOP annual conference always has several excellent papers on work and family. I presented a half-day workshop on telework in the 1990s. I have reviewed scores of conference proposals.

Utah Council on Family Relations (UCFR) 1991-present. This organization is geared mostly to graduate students. In my graduate-school days I presented here and won the Outstanding Graduate Student of the Year award in 1993. I have encouraged my students to present here, and dozens have done so. In 2012 I nominated Kaylene Fellows and she won the Outstanding Graduate Student of the Year. I am currently BYU representative on the UCFR steering committee and will be the program chair in 2014 and the president in 2015.

B. SERVICE IN OTHER PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS

Sloan Foundation/Work-Family Directions Work/Life Database and Flexibility Inquiry Project (2005-2008). I served as chair of the analytic advisory committee. Employee data had previously been collected in comprehensive work-life needs assessments, flexibility evaluation studies, women’s advancement studies, and other surveys administered by WFD since 1995 to 200,000 employees in more than 50 companies. These surveys collected data on a wide range of work-life and work environment topics including dependent care arrangements, work-life support, access to and attitudes about flexibility, satisfaction with existing policies and programs, and management effectiveness. I headed a team of distinguished work-life researchers to provide guidance and collaboration in preparing and using these data in scholarly publications. Community, Work, and Family has named Jan Civian and I as co-editors for the January 2008 issue of the journal. Eight articles were published from our project in that issue.

Sloan Foundation: Workplace Flexibility Initiative. Selected to serve on the steering committee of this initiative to promote workplace flexibility in eight major media markets. (2005)
