CLASS AAA By Scott St. Lifer PREVIEW Burke County at Gainesville BURKE county GAINESville Opponent Score Opponent Score fter stunning a Sandy Creek team that had won 41 straight games, Gainesville looks to Aride the momentum into a semifinals matchup against Burke County. The Red Elephants Baldwin (W) 31-14 Buford (L) 0-49 won the coin toss on Saturday to gain homefield advantage. Josey (W) 56-14 White County (W) 40-3 Throughout the season, quarterback Deshaun Watson and wideout Caleb Hayman have led the Red Elephants’ offense and hope to continue that in tonight’s game. During the 35-21 Lowndes (L) 21-31 North Hall (W) 55-15 victory over Sandy Creek, Watson finished 25-for-35 passing with 220 yards and five total touchdowns, two of which went to Hayman. Westside, Augusta (W) 63-0 Franklin County (W) 42-13 In order to stop the Bears of Burke County, Gainesville must have another impressive Glenn Hills (W) 62-6 Johnson, Gainesville (W) 47-0 defensive outing. With dual-threat quarterback Corey Mayton leading the Bears, Gainesville will have to try to slow him down through the air and on the ground. Last week, the senior Hephzibah (W) 55-6 Oconee County (W) 66-7 gained 146 total yards in the Bears’ 32-28 quarterfinal victory over Allatoona. The Bears rushed for 220 total yards on the Buccaneers with running back Donquell Green leading the Cross Creek (W) 84-7 Monroe Area (W) 41-21 team with 84 yards on 14 carries. Washington County (W) 28-20 Walnut Grove (W) 48-0 The semifinal appearance marks the second consecutive trip for the Bears andthird all-time, while Gainesville advanced for the first time since 2009. This experience has given Butler (W) 35-0 West Hall (W) 41-0 many of the players the mentality of what it takes to win in a high-profile game. Even with both programs’ successes over the years, this will mark the first-ever meeting between the Thomson (W) 31-8 Stephens County (W) 62-7 two teams. Drew (W) 42-7 Dalton (W) 48-27 Burke County hopes it can get to the championship game this year after losing 49-15 to Carrollton last season in the semifinals. Gainesville, on the other hand, seeks to return to the Woodward Academy (W) 35-7 Monroe (W) 16-13 finals for the first time since 2009 when they lost to Peach County. He also had a game-ending interception in the end zone to clinch the win. Westover (W) 28-20 Perry (W) 24-6 In order to pull out another victory, Peach County will need to contain the Syrupmakers’ rushing attack led by running back Terrell Cason. CLASS AA By Sean Conway PREVIEW Buford at Carver-Columbus Buford carver-columbus Opponent Score Opponent Score hen Buford and Carver-Columbus kick it off in the semifinals, there will be plenty of Wfamiliarity. “Familiarity” as in these teams have played each other in each of the last Blessed Trinity (W) 42-0 Spencer (W) 52-0 two regular seasons during the non-region portion of the schedule, and “familiarity” as in both Gainesville (W) 49-0 Buford (L) 7-35 schools are used to making deep playoff runs every fall. Buford is the four-time defending state champion, dating back to 2007. Carver-Columbus Carver, Columbus (W) 35-7 Hardaway (W) 46-14 won the Class AAA title in 2007, and has been to at least the quarterfinals in Class AA or AAA every year since 2006. Yulee, FL (W) 49-7 LaGrange (W) 26-8 In September, coach Jess Simpson’s Wolves defeated Carver-Columbus 35-7 in Buford, Therrell (W) 49-0 Heard County (W) 40-6 but in 2010, the Tigers beat Buford 14-0 at Kinnett Stadium in Columbus. It was Buford’s only loss since early 2009. For this meeting, Carver-Columbus will use Memorial Stadium as its Lovett (W) 35-7 Manchester (W) 41-0 home turf in the semifinal. Both teams have dominated opponents on both sides of the ball in their quest for a state Decatur (W) 66-13 Callaway (W) 28-14 championship. Clarkston (W) 71-0 Kendrick (W) 47-0 The least amount of points Buford has scored in any game is 28, and that includes the three playoff victories. Quarterback Sam Clay is an accomplished passer, but he also likes to hand the ball GAC (W) 28-0 Jordan (W) 67-6 off to a stable of more than capable running backs, including /fullback Nathan Staub. In Buford’s 49-13 quarterfinal win over Elbert County, Staub accounted for two touchdowns and led Blessed Trinity (W) 49-10 Temple (W) 42-0 the Wolves’ stifling defense. Buford has only allowed one team to score 14 points this season. Temple (W) 49-13 Lovett (W) 38-7 Tigers coach Dell McGee will rely on a dominant running game featuring Marquez Hol- loway. Holloway, listed at 5-foot-7, rushed for 248 yards and a touchdown in the Tigers’ 34-21 Jefferson County (W) 31-0 Laney (W) 31-6 quarterfinal win over Fitzgerald. Much like Clay, quarterback Torrance McGee is also a dual- threat weapon for the Tigers. He rushed for two scores and tossed another against Fitzgerald. hen Calhoun hosts Appling County in their semifinal matchup, it will be a game pitting Dodge County (W) 20-0 Dalton (W) 24-14 Wa powerhouse program against an up-and-coming team. Wayne County (W) 35-25 Armuchee (W) 38-7 Calhoun, the Region 7 champion, is a perennial power, known for its high scoring of- fense. The Yellow Jackets have scored more than 60 points twice this season and have broken Coffee (W) 28-21 Pepperell (W) 39-7 the 40-point mark eight times. The Yellow Jacket defense has been effective as well, with two shutouts in 2011. Brantley County (W) 26-13 Chattooga (W) 41-0 Deep playoff runs are nothing new for Calhoun (13-0). The Yellow Jackets are the three Toombs County (W) 37-0 Sonoraville (W) 66-0 time Class AA runners-up (losing each time to another 2011 semifinalist, Buford). Coach Hal Lamb will rely on a familiar face to guide his offense: his nephew Taylor Lamb. In last week’s McIntosh County Acad. The Commerce (W) 35-13 Calvary Day (W) 49-7 reason for the Wolverines’ run, though, has been their explosive offense. The offensive line has been mashing opposing defenses while allowing the running game to churn up yardage Athens Christian (W) 29-14 Bryan County (W) 45-0 to the tune of 328 yards and 31.7 points per game. Prince Avenue has rushed for nearly 4,000 yards this season. Wingback Rob Farriba and quarterback Carl Mattox have a firm grasp Riverside Military (W) 48-25 Treutlen (W) 41-7 on the offense for coach Mark Farriba. Both players also excel for a defense that gives up Washington-Wilkes (W) 21-8 Dooly County (W) 37-0 just seven points per game. On special teams, Prince Avenue Christian has to like the cold- blooded leg of Adam Hayden, who nailed two second-half field goals to knock off Bremen. Charlton County (W) 21-3 Bowdon (W) 38-7 The Wolverines have previously taken down Charlton County 21-3 and Washington Wilkes 21-8 after winning Region 8-A. Bremen (W) 20-15 Lincoln County (W) 22-14
