She also represented Serbia and Montenegro at Miss Universe that same year, where she placed 3rd runner-up. “Sanja Papic is an exceptional beauty. Why Are We So Similar? Post-Ottoman Urban Space in Turkey and Yugoslavia Nataša Mišković Why would I feel at home walking down Istanbul’s nine- teenth-century boulevard İstiklal Caddesi the very first time I vis- ited the metropolis on the Bosphorus? How come it reminded me so much of Belgrade’s Knez Mihailo Street? Growing up in Swit- zerland as the daughter of a Yugoslav (Serbian) father, I had al- ways been fascinated when, on visits to Belgrade, my family would show me around and explain at certain instances that something looked this or that way “because of the Turks”. Visiting Istanbul much later as a fully educated historian, I felt instantly at ease and enjoyed blending into the crowd, trying to communicate through the countless words which are identical in Serbian, Bosnian and Turkish because of their joint past in the millennia-old Byzan- tine-Ottoman space. Beyond the usual culprits such as language, food and crafts, similarities and common roots are not easily de- tectable. Memory contested by national master narratives, differ- ent gazes and an equally outdated and demanding administrative language—the Ottoman—obstruct access to further research with more or less intent (Kaser 2013, 2011). A large research project at the University of Basel, financed by the Swiss National Science Foundation between 2013 and 2018, provided me the unique opportunity to study the above questions 43 through an innovative visual approach.1 The following offers a brief insight into this project and some reflections on its find- ings. Since Iraq was first allowed to resume oil sales nearly two decades ago it has paid funds into a United Nations body overseeing compensation for looting and damage inflicted during Saddam Hussein’s seven- month occupation of Kuwait. More than a million claimants have been paid and nearly all the $52.4 billion reparations bill has been met through Iraq’s annual allocation of 5 percent of crude oil exports to the UN Compensation Commission (UNCC). But with its economy now set to shrink for the first time since the 2003 US-led invasion toppled Saddam and end- ed more than a decade of sanctions, Iraq can ill afford to divert a large chunk of the 2015 budget to make that last payment due next year. “We have been really committed to paying this on time up until now,” Zebari said in a telephone interview conducted on Thursday. “We are in discussions with the Kuwaitis, trying to defer the payment for two years or at least a year, to allow some space..
