CLIMATE GENIUS LOCI SOIL 3 Crus, 3 Municipalities, 3 Gran Selezione Consorzio Vino Chianti Classico has long been working on the Additional Geographic Mentions (UGA). "We are working in this direction" - conrms the president of the Consorzio, Giovanni Manetti - "And we hope to arrive at the introduction of the UGA shortly. For the moment we are focusing on the top wine category of the Appellations, then applying just to Gran Selezione and identifying about a dozen areas, mainly on a municipal basis, with some exceptions". 3 Crus, 3 Municipalities, 3 Gran Selezione 3 Crus, 3 Municipalities, 3 Gran Selezione Fonterutoli, Soil: lime-stone rocky soil, with lots of chalk, very rich in background. Castellina in Chianti Microclimate: very balanced thanks to the combination of the fresher medium-high hilly area climate and the vineyards location, facing the Val d’Elsa, warmer area able to mitigate the above site. Exposure: S, S/W Large range of temperatures between the day and the night, due to the contrast between the day heat Altitude: 470m a.s.l. and the fresh currents blowing from the woods overlooking the vineyards during the night. Vicoregio, Soil: mix of Limestone, with good component of Clay and abundant chalky structure. Castelnuovo Berardenga Microclimate: this vineyard is located on a whole-day very well radiated plateu and it is characterized by huge day/night temperature uctuations. Exposure: S/E, S In the summer days temperatures are slightly above the average in the area; in the night the minimum Altitude: 350m a.s.l. average temperatures are 2,5°C lower than in the other Estate plots. is temperature decrease is due to the ventilated channel that forms during the night. Badiola, Soil: mostly characterized by Schist and Sandstone Radda in Chianti Microclimate: located on the high hills, in the internal area of Chianti Classico which in the summer time benets from fresh currents. Exposure: S/E, S/W e average temperatures recorded at Badiola are the lowest of the whole Estate, with conseuent delay Altitude: 570m a.s.l. in the sprouting phase, later ripening and harvest around mid-October. 3 Crus, 3 Municipalities, 3 Gran Selezione Since the 2017 vintage the Mazzei family has increasingly focused its attention on the peculiarities of their terroirs to create 3 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. e 2017 Vintage It’s hard to remember such a remarkable season as 2017, when a succession of challenging weather events demanded all our instinct and expertise. A frost around 20 April was followed by a spring and summer when it hardly rained at all, with summer temperatures hitting the high notes and inducing a water stress that limited grape growth and reduced bunch weight. Towards the end of the season we took a gamble, waiting for September rains, and were rewarded with 130mm of rainfall in twenty days, which together with an abrupt fall in temperatures (with lows reaching 5 °C) gave the grapes new vigour. Grape uality was therefore good overall with peaks of excellence, far exceeding our pre-rainfall expectations, though yields were down 35% on the yearly average. 2017 turned out to be of those ‘textbook’ years when great experience and a careful monitoring of every single vineyard, on a tailored, plot-by-plot basis, were essential to winemaking success. 3 Crus, 3 Municipalities, 3 Gran Selezione C F Chianti Classico Gran Selezione D.O.C.G Castellina in Chianti Gran Selezione since 1995 Grape varieties: 100% Sangiovese: 6 clones + 8 estate massal selections Provenance: from the best 11 parcels of the vineyards surrounding the hamlet of Fonterutoli Alcohol: 13,80% vol.
