Nancy Millis
Celebrating 50 years of the Australian Society for Microbiology Nancy Millis Born in Melbourne in 1922, Nancy Fannie Millis studied agriculture at the University of Melbourne, graduating with a Master of Agricultural Science in 1946. She spent a year studying agricultural methods in Papua New Guinea before travelling to the University of Bristol on a Boots Research Scholarship. It was here that Millis was introduced to fermentation, gaining her PhD in 1951. Upon her return to Australia, Millis was appointed to a lectureship in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Melbourne. A Fulbright travel grant allowed her to visit the United States and Japan in 1954, spending time at the Hopkins Marine Station at Stanford and the Institute of Applied Microbiology at the University of Tokyo. Millis was involved in teaching one of the first courses in biotechnology in Japan and later co-authored a textbook based on the course, which was one of the earliest of its kind. Millis pioneered the teaching of industrial microbiology at the University of Melbourne, instituting the applied microbiology course and concentrating on fermentation techniques and the physiology of microorganisms. She progressed to become the fourth woman appointed to a professorial position at the University when she was awarded a personal chair in 1982. Millis retired in 1987 and remains an Emeritus Professor in the Department of Microbiology. Upon its establishment in 1980, Millis became chair of the Commonwealth Government Recombinant DNA Monitoring Committee (later the Genetic Manipulation Advisory Committee). Her ground-breaking research into water quality and long association with the water industry helped to improve water treatment. -

A large proportion of them are able to self-propel in fluids with a vast diversity of swimming gaits and motility patterns. In this paper we present a biophysical survey of the available experimental data produced to date on the characteristics of motile behaviour in unicellular microswimmers. We assemble from the available literature empirical data on the motility of four broad categories of organisms: bacteria (and archaea), flagellated eukaryotes, spermatozoa and ciliates. Whenever possible, we gather the following biological, morphological, kinematic and dynamical parameters: species, geometry and size of the organisms, swimming speeds, actuation frequencies, actuation amplitudes, number of flagella and properties of the surrounding fluid. We then organise the data using the established fluid mechanics principles for propulsion at low Reynolds number. Specifically, we use theoretical biophysical models for the locomotion of cells within the same taxonomic groups of organisms as a means of rationalising the raw material we have assembled, while demonstrating the variability for organisms of different species within the same group. The material gathered in our work is an attempt to summarise the available experimental data in the field, providing a convenient and practical reference point for future studies. B. hyodysenteriae is the causative agent of swine dysentery, a disease with an important impact on pig production while B. pilosicoli is responsible of a milder diarrheal disease in these animals, porcine intestinal spirochetosis. Recent sequencing projects have provided information for the genome of these species facilitating the search of vaccine candidates using reverse vaccinology approaches. However, practically no experimental evidence exists of the actual gene products being expressed and of those proteins exposed on the cell surface or released to the cell media. Intestinal Spirochetosis: an Interesting Cause of Chronic Diarrhea
Case Report Annals of Infectious Disease and Epidemiology Published: 22 Feb, 2021 Intestinal Spirochetosis: An Interesting Cause of Chronic Diarrhea Harshad Joshi* Department of Pathology, Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital and Research Centre, India Abstract Forty-six-year male from India presented with 2-year history of small volume non bloody diarrhea with mild abdominal pain. He had no history of fever or constitutional symptoms and only minimal weight loss. His blood evaluation showed mild iron deficiency anemia with normal serum albumin and renal profile. Routine stool examination showed no blood, pus cells, ova or parasites. Celiac serology was negative. Contrast enhanced CT (Computed Tomography) abdomen showed subcentimetric mesenteric lymph nodes, bowel was normal in size and thickness. Upper GI endoscopy was normal with normal duodenal biopsy; Ileocolonoscopy showed few aphthous ulcers in terminal ileum with mild nodularity. Ileal biopsies showed bluish filamentous structure on surface epithelium forming a thick false brush border appearance, suggestive of intestinal spirochetosis. Rest of ileal architecture was well preserved. Patient was commenced on cyclical antibiotics including Nitazoxanide, Metronidazole, doxycycline and Rifaximin. Patient on follow up showed improvement in symptoms and weight gain. Intestinal spirochetosis is commonly transmitted to human from infected animals. Our patient was butcher by occupation. Our case is an interesting presentation of Intestinal Spirochetosis in form of chronic diarrhea. Workshop on Ethical Engagement in Conflict Research Workshop Participants Kanisha Bond | University of Maryland My research focuses on internal conflict, contentious politics and social movement organizational Behavior. I am particularly interested in the ways in which people Become moBilized into political action, how social movement organizations recruit and manage their memBership, and how these internal processes influence inter-group collaboration. My work in these areas has Been puBlished in top academic outlets, including the American Political Science Review, the British Journal of Political Science, and the Journal International Negotiation. I am currently working on two large research proJects. The first is a Book proJect that focuses on the development of collaborative relationships among violent political organizations in the Americas over the last half-century; the second examines systematic differences in the form, content and organization of women’s participation in violent social movements across world regions. I currently teach graduate and undergraduate courses on terrorism, civil war, social movements and research design. I also serve as a faculty mentor for the McNair Scholars Program and the START Center’s Expanding Access to Security Studies Education initiative.
