TRAMES, 2018, 22(72/67), 4, 365–388 SAUDI NOVELISTS’ RESPONSE TO TERRORISM THROUGH FICTION: A STUDY IN COMPARISON TO WORLD LITERATURE Mashhoor Abdu Al-Moghales, Abdel-Fattah M. Adel, and Suhail Ahmad University of Bisha Abstract. The post-9/11 period has posited new questions for the Saudi society that required answers from different perspectives. The Saudi novelists tackled the issue of terrorism in their works and tried to define it and dig for its roots. Some blame the dominant religious-based culture for this phenomenon asking for more openness in the Saudi culture. Others take a defensive approach of the religious discourse blaming outside factors for this phenomenon. This positively connoted research uses the principles of deductive research and puts the Saudi novels that treat the theme of terrorism on par with some world literature that have the same concern excavating the common patterns such as (a) drive for terrorism and the lifestyle of a terrorist; (b) extreme religious groups and religious discourse; and (c) way of life: liberal West versus the Islamist. The selected novels are in three languages: Arabic, Urdu and English. Al-Irhabi 20 and Terrorist explore the background and transformation of the terrorists. Jangi, and Qila Jungi share almost identical events and ideological background, they explain the reasons for apparently irresistible attraction for Jihad. Along such a dichotomy, one can find varied degrees of analysis through a psycho-analytical and textual perspective. Modirzadeh* In many Middle Eastern countries, poverty is deep and it is spread- ing, women lack rights and are denied schooling. Whole societies remain stagnant while the world moves ahead. These are not the failures of a culture or a religion. These are the failures of political and economic doctrines. -George W. Bush' In effect, the Hudood laws have given legal sanction to biased social attitudes towards women, thus not only legitimating the oppression of women in the eyes of the state but also intensifying it: women who seek to deviate from prescribed social norms now may not only be subject to societal censure, but also to criminal penalties. Women and the Caliphate: Women’s Rights and Restrictions in Islamist Ideology and Practice Centre for the Response to Radicalisation and Terrorism Policy Paper No. 7 (2016) Emily Dyer The Henry Jackson Society March 2016 WOMEN AND THE CALIPHATE Summary • This paper seeks to provide an insight into how purportedly non-violent Islamist ideology overlaps with the violent Islamism of Islamic State (IS)1 and al-Qaeda (AQ). It does so by studying the phenomenon of British women travelling to Iraq and Syria to join the Caliphate, and highlighting the common aims of both non-violent and violent Islamist groups regarding women’s roles and obligations in society. • Western societies are grappling not only with the significant numbers of their citizens travelling to Syria and Iraq to support IS, but also with the fact that many are women, often travelling with their young children. In recent years, IS has systematically forced women to live as second-class citizens. Women have been banished from public spaces, while those who do not conform to its restrictions faced brutal punishment. The decision taken by Western women to risk everything in order to live in this Caliphate – giving up their rights and freedoms in the process – has been a source of consternation to policymakers and analysts. • In attempting to add some clarity to this discussion, Women and the Caliphate: Women’s Rights and Restrictions in Islamist Ideology and Practice examines whether IS’ ideology regarding women’s roles in society can be found closer to home, among those living in Britain. This paper examines as its primary case study the prominent Islamist group Hizb ut-Tahrir (HT), with a focus on the messaging and activities of its British branch, Hizb ut- Tahrir Britain (HTB). -

SAVORY ABSTRACT The article outlines the history of relations between the Safavid state and its dhimmı¯ minorities. Important policies derived from and peculiar to Ithna Asharı¯ doctrine are also discussed as well as the importance of the ruler’s discretion in the application and enforcement of the policies within the region. Particular attention is paid to the period of rule under Abba¯sIinwhich multiculturalism and tolerance were prevalent throughout the kingdom. The more hostile relations of the state to its non-Muslim minorities before and after Abba¯s I’s reign are attributed to the eventual decline of the state. Introduction Theological and Juridical Background The qur’a¯nic proof texts on relations between Muslims and adherents of other faiths send a mixed message. On the one hand, we have Q. 2:256: la ikra¯ha fı¯ al-dı¯n, ‘there is no compulsion in religion’, which has been interpreted to mean that Muslims should be tolerant of other faiths; and 109:6: lakum dı¯nakum wa-lı¯dı¯nı¯, ‘to you your religion and to me my religion’, which appears to indicate acceptance of religious pluralism. On the other hand, we have 5:54: ya¯ ayyuha¯ alladhı¯na a¯manu¯la¯ tattakhidhu¯ al-yahu¯da wa-al-nasa¯ra¯ awliya¯’a…wa-man yatawallahum minkum fa-innahum minhum, ‘take not the Jews and Christians for friends …He among you who taketh them for friends is one of them’, which does not seem to augur well for inter-faith dialogue. -

ABSTRACT al-Hedaithy, Mesaid Ibrahim. Ph.D., University of Durham, 1989. Modernization and Islam in Saudi Arabia: a Sociological Study of "Public Morality Committees". This is a study of the dynamics of institutional religious change in Saudi Arabia. Its aim is to analyse the effects of institutional differentiation on the ability of official religious organizations to continue playing their public role. The theoretical framework is drawn from studies in sociology of religion which deal with religious change in the modern world. Three main approaches have been utilized to test the hypothesis that there is a positive relationship between institutional differentiation and secularization (loss of religious influence in public life). Firstly, there is a general review of the main sociological arguments dealing with modernization and secularization. The aim is to test the applicability of these arguments to the situation in Saudi Arabia. Secondly, a comparative and historical approach is adopted to ascertain the changes that have taken place in the public role of religion over the past five decades. And thirdly, a detailed case study is presented of hay'at al-amr bi-'1-maerrif wa-'1-nahy Can al-munkar (Organization for Enjoining the Acceptable and Forbidding the Reprehensible): a unique religious organization modelled after the traditional Islamic institution of hisbah, and commonly known as "Public Morality Committees". The case study provides basic information, much of which has never been published in translation, about the hay'ah. The evidence, collected during fieldwork in Saudi Arabia, demonstrates that a traditional institution can continue playing its unique role in a changing environment with an increasing degree of institutional differentiation. -

18 IDEAS OF SELF-DEFINITION AMONG ZOROASTRIANS IN POST-REVOLUTIONARY IRAN Sarah Stewart he tumultuous events of the Islamic Revolution of 1979 in Iran, followed Tby the eight-year war with Iraq, had a profound effect on the lives of all Iranians. Research conducted inside Iran on religious minorities during this time all but ceased. Moreover, the renewed religious fervour that characterized the post-revolutionary years in Iran, together with the continuation of discrim- inatory legislation, meant that many members of minority communities became reticent about discussing their religion – especially with foreigners. Information about the Zoroastrian religion and its people in Iran over the past 40 years has thus been fragmentary and is derived from a variety of sources. There are the accounts of those who left the country after the Revolution and settled elsewhere, some of them returning regularly to visit family members, maintain property that they continue to own, and to do business. Title: Assessing Apostasy, Blasphemy and Excommunication (takfir) in Islam and Their Modern Application by States and Non-State Actors A Thesis Submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Masaki Nagata Supervised by Dr. Mohamed Elewa Badar Brunel Law School Brunel University June 2016 Abstract In certain contemporary Muslim majority states apostasy and blasphemy are not merely religious sins; they are acts which potentially have legal, or extra-legal, consequences. Although apostasy has not been criminalised in many such states, extrajudicial killings of apostates are carried out by some extremist groups and individuals. Such groups always justify these murders of fellow Muslims and non-Muslims on the grounds of apostasy and blasphemy. The concept and use of takfir (excommunication) is also a serious issue in Muslim majority states. Groups such as Daesh (also known as Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) rely on takfir to attack fellow Muslims, despite there being no legal basis in Shari’a for the use of takfir or for criminalising apostasy. Although the concept was developed by people, not God, takfir are now being used to bypass rational human judgement. Their use plays a major role in many of the religious issues confronting Muslim majority states, such as the criminalisation of apostasy and blasphemy. This thesis analyses the central issues of apostasy, blasphemy and takfir collectively, as their history and their contemporary use and misuse by extremist groups are inextricably entwined. The key finding is that the right to punish apostasy and blasphemy and to issue declarations of excommunication (takfir), all originally reserved in Islam for God only, have been appropriated by man. -

CR5-1 05 05/02/05 11:44 AM Page 111 Political Islam and the New Global Economy The Political Economy of an Egyptian Social Movement J OEL B EININ Stanford University, Stanford, California Since September 11th, 2001, much ink has been spilled dis- cussing “Islamic fundamentalism” or, ostensibly more authoritatively but not necessarily more precisely, “Wahhabism” and its threat to U.S. national security and Western civilization. The armed radicals of al-Qa‘ida and sim- ilar groups, while they have received the lion’s share of public attention, are only one relatively small component of a broad movement of political Islam that has emerged since the mid-1970s. Proponents of “political Islam” or “Islamists” or “Islamic activists”—I use these terms interchangeably—are Muslims who do not necessarily accept received understandings of the Islamic tradition as the ultimate determinants of contemporary Muslim identity and practice. Rather, they self-consciously seek to refashion that tradition in response to the challenges—however defined—faced by their community and to mobilize Muslim sentiment and identity in support of their vision of a proper Islamic society (White 2002, 23; Wiktorowicz 2004b, 3). Even if that vision is presented as a return to an ideal past, it addresses modern political, economic, and cultural problems. The term “fundamentalism” is inadequate to describe this phenomenon because it ● 111 CR5-1 05 05/02/05 11:44 AM Page 112 112 ● Political Islam and the New Global Economy suggests a Protestant literalist reading of the Bible that has no analog in Islam and because it implies a backward-looking rather than a modern social movement. -
