Roby Paul Scherrer Donna Susens Tracie Wells Bill Yoerger Honorable Gerald Zore Honorary Board Bryan M. Hadin James Irsay At Noble, we know that dreams not only make us unique, but they bring shape to our hopes for the future, and help lay out the path forward. For some, it is to land the perfect job or earn that promotion. For others, it is to find just the right place to call home or to find roommates to share it with. Still others dream of pursuing a new hobby or spending Saturday evenings laughing with friends. And parents dream that their child will have the same opportunities as their brother and sister without disabilities or to have someone willing to fight for that right with them.

It is not for any of us to say that a dream is too big or too small to pursue. If it is worth being held close to one’s heart, to captivate their thoughts and take root in the imagination, then it is our job to support them along the journey. So each of the services we offer to the children and adults with disabilities we serve— and to their families—are designed to help those 1,500 people who rely on us each year take the next step forward—and then the one after that. Julia Huffman President and CEO But first, we must help them believe that their dreams are achievable. That what may seem impossible is simply a challenge worth taking on, and that with the right supports and a few friends along the way, nothing is out of reach. And we can make this kind of promise because of the support of people like you. People who believe in our mission of expanding opportunities and enhancing the quality of life for people with disabilities and their families through Hon. Kathy Davis individualized services. Chair, Noble Board of Directors Together we can make good on what we ultimately stand for: if you can dream it, we will help you achieve it. And for that, we thank you. Bethany is a young woman driven to succeed— and Noble is there to help her do just that. Bethany came to us a couple years ago through Project SEARCH. Modeled after the internationally recognized program developed at Children’s Hospital in Cincinnati, Project SEARCH at St.Vincent Carmel Hospital provides transition-age students with a series of eight-week internship experi- ences that prepare them for competitive employment in our community. Through Project SEARCH, interns like Bethany experience total workplace immersion during their last year of high school. This results in a tremen- dous development in their interviewing and job seeking skills, their ability to work in specific job segments, their social and communication skills, and their ability to respond to and exceed employer expectations.

Noble partners with Westfield Washington Schools, Zionsville Community Schools and the Hamilton- Boone- Madison Special Services Cooperative to help students like Bethany complete at least three internship experi- ences at St.Vincent Carmel, resulting in a portfolio that includes their resume, letters of recommendation and any recognitions they achieved during that school year. Even more important, however, is the success that they expe- rience in the job search afterward. Our Project SEARCH has achieved national acclaim four years in a row for our outstanding 88% employment rate after graduation.

After Bethany completed her three internship rotations, she began her job search with the help of Noble’s Community Employment service and quickly landed a job at Kaye’s Beauty College. There she files documents, tidies the administrative offices and helps keep the school looking its best. Director of Admissions Jim Galloway certainly appreciates having Bethany on the team, and shares a quick fist bump with her when asked how much she brings to the table.

Of course, the best part about having dreams is that they evolve as our lives do, and Bethany is already dreaming about her future career path. The next stop on her journey? Landing her dream job at an animal shelter for cats and dogs. And you can bet that you will see Bethany doing just that in the near future.

IF YOU CAN DREAM IT, WE’LL HELP YOU LIVE IT Bethany’s Dream If 60 is the new 50, someone needs to tell Walter. Ask him how old he is, and he will give you a sly grin while telling you he’s 19. Apparently he dropped the other 42 years on the basketball court—one of his favorite places to be. Most Tuesdays and Thursdays, you can find him at the YMCA shooting hoops and drawing others out onto the court with his infectious smile.

Bright and early each morning, Community Living Direct Support Professional Reonna Sublett (or one of her co-workers) arrives at the home Walter shares with his sister to help him complete his morning routine. After doing a few chores and choosing what he wants to wear, the two sit down over breakfast so they can talk about Walter’s plans for the day. It might be a trip to Glendale Mall, with that mandatory stop at Cinnabon. Or it might be a visit to Irvington Library to look through the sports magazines and check out a movie, spending time with his friends at Noble East, or a walk in the nearby park. What matters is that Walter decides how he wants to spend his day.

Of course, some dreams take a bit of work to achieve, so the match-up with LeBron James hasn’t happened yet, but Walter has plenty of time for that. After all, he’s only 19—plus a couple decades. And he’s going to keep practicing his jump shot at the Y so he’s ready.

In the meantime, he is happy living a life that he creates as he goes, with a bit of help from Noble’s Community Exploration and Community Integration Day Services. That gives him the one-on-one time he enjoys with staff like Reonna while letting him stay connected with the friends he has made through Noble’s day services. And his family is happy knowing that Walter is loving life— even if he is still waiting for that shoot-out with LeBron.

IF YOU CAN DREAM IT, WE’LL HELP YOU LIVE IT

Walter’s Dream Almost from the moment of birth, life was difficult for Dane and his family. Even as a baby, he did not want to be held. As a toddler, he didn’t want to play with others at preschool, and he wouldn’t smile or look people in the eye when he responded to them. When he was diagnosed with autism, it offered an explanation, but it did little to make day-to-day life any easier. As a result of his autism, Dane had extreme sensory issues, making hugs and other physical contact out of the question. Tantrums were a daily occurrence, and he was often frustrated and unhappy.

As his mother Amity remembers, “Life was overwhelming for him and overwhelming for me.”

When he turned 8, Amity learned about Noble’s Summer Day Camps, and that became the turning point. Now in their 10th year, these camps were created because families wanted fun summertime activities for their children whose disabilities often excluded them from other summer camps. At Noble’s Camps, Dane thrived. For three summers in a row, he enjoyed everything from Art Camp to Life Skills Camp, where he made both friends and a lifetime of memories. And more important for him and his family, those camps gave him the skills to deal with the everyday challenges of his young life. Today, Dane is 12 and a junior counselor at Vacation Bible School. His dream is to become an elementary school teacher, and sensory issues are largely a thing of his past as he cuddles with his dog Elliott. Tantrums have been replaced with “rock, paper, scissors” to resolve disagreements with his younger sister Reagan. In fact, kids are always asking him to come play with them during Reagan’s softball games.

Ten years ago, Dane’s family dreamed that one day their son would be able to enjoy life and achieve his dreams. And today because of Noble and the support of his family, he is creating a path to a future filled with dreams.
