The burglarized homes had foliage that obscured the front or back yards from the neighbors’ view. In all but two of the incidents the residents were on vacation. One victim had left to go out to dinner, and the other victim was at work when their burglaries occurred. The loss has been jewelry, a DVD player, a computer hard drive, and other easy-to-carry items. The thieves used pillowcases to carry away the loot. With all of the work at last completed on Kim Clymer Kelley my friend Charlie’s motor home, we were hitting the road once again. It was on the way home last year that things started to go wrong, first there was the strange light that came on warning about something being wrong with the brakes, then there was the transmission struggling on the hills, and then, with just an hour or so left in our week long trip, a tire blew out. So after a year, several thousand dollars worth of repairs, and a bit of cosmetic and cleaning work, the old rig was ready for a test run. Not wanting to tempt fate too much Charlie decided that we were not going too far the first time out. So after stocking the fridge and the cabinets, packing our bags, and filling the tanks, we hit the road and headed up the coast on the 101. We spent the first two nights at Emma Woods State Beach on the north side of Ventura. The camping at Emma Woods is great. It is not a well-known or well used-campground, but it is one of the few where all of the camp spots are right on the beach. It’s a great little well-kept se- cret of a beach…the surf literally breaks about 10 feet from your door at high tide and it’s only about a 1 ½ mile hike south on the beach to downtown Ventura. The beach at the campground is composed of an interesting collection of well-worn rocks (a real treat for a rock hound like me), but there are sandy beaches nearby. We had two wonderfully cool and breezy days there and then left for points further north…we were not sure where, we were just playing it by ear and letting the trip take us rather than us taking a trip. After stopping off to explore downtown Carpentaria (in all of my trips up the coast, I had never ventured into the adorable downtown) we continued north through Santa Barbara and saw the exit for Gaviotta State Beach. Neither of us had ever stopped there, so we decided to check it out. Since camping spots are at a premium in August, we decided that if any were available, we would stay there. We put our name on the waiting list and were told to check in about noon to see if any would be available for the night. Since it was nearing lunchtime and we had a couple hours to kill, we headed up to Buellton to pick up some pea soup at Andersen’s for lunch. We returned to find that the last available spot was ours. After enjoying some tasty (but very salty) soup and a really yummy cream puff, we set out to explore the area. The campground is situated under a very high railroad trestle and offers a long fishing pier that has a hoist to lower boats into the water. We joined all the fisherman out on the pier and were happy to find some seals and pelicans also checking out the scene. The seals were on the bottom of the steps below the dock where boats loaded and unloaded, and the pelicans were very aggressively seeking din- ner from the fisherman on the dock. Since it was high tide and there was no access to the beach to the north of the park, we decided to head south for a beach hike. The coastline rose sharply from the beach in steep rocky cliffs that in one area were stark white…a sharp contrast to the sepia and sand color of the surrounding cliffs. Upon returning to the campground from our venture, we stopped to investigate the river that flowed out of the pass to the ocean, then headed back to the RV to relax and have dinner. We returned to the fishing pier for sunset before retiring for the night. Our journey continues next week. For Your Funny Bone There was a man who had worked all his life, had saved his money and was a real miser. Just before he died, he said to his wife, “When I die, I want to take my money to the afterlife with me.” He got his wife to promise him with all of her heart that when he died, she would put all of the money in the casket with him. Well, he died. He was stretched out in the casket, his wife was sitting there in black, and her friend was sitting next to her. When they finished the ceremony, just before the undertaker got ready to close the casket, the wife said, “Wait just a minute!” She had a box with her and came over to the casket and placed it inside. Then the undertaker locked the casket down and rolled it away. “I know you weren’t foolish enough to put all that money in there with your husband,” said the friend. The loyal wife replied, “Listen, I can’t go back on my word. I promised him that I was going to put that money in the casket with him and I did,” said the wife. “I got it all together, put it into my account and wrote him a check. If he can cash it, he can spend it.” Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.” Quote: ~ John Dewey Activities: Monthly Excursions: Unless listed differently, all activities are at the Hart Memorial Park (Senior Center) 222 W. *For reservations and further information Sierra Madre Blvd., Sierra Madre call Susan Clifton at (626) 355-7394 or stop by and see her at the Hart Memorial Park Lunch Program: Monday- Friday at House- 9:00 AM- 2:00 PM the Intervale Café -12:00 Noon-Call (626) August 29- Hollywood Bowl- John Williams 355-0256 to make your daily reservation.
