She is an amazing if quiet character but we do get to see why and it's a nice descent into flashback and character development. The Big O. The art style is also very unique and good. My main point of this is that most of the characters are neither particularly interesting nor relatable, especially what with the constant digressions into weird comic relief situations. Watch at least 1 episode. Its mission: to raise "Death Scythes" for the Shinigami to wield against the many evils of their fantastical world. His Weapons are there for some good slapstick but don't do much for story telling. I cant really think of anything else to be honest because everything about the anime is just awesome. On a day in 2000, at a certain pub, the three creators of The Big O got together and to discuss their passionate thoughts…! Kazuyoshi Katayama The director of The Big O, he has also worked on other anime including Sentimental Journey and Giant Robo. An established pro of robot dramas. Keiichi Sato The Big O character and mecha designer/supervisor. He has worked with director Kazuyoshi Katayama since Giant Robo, and has also worked on the City Hunter TV special. Hitoshi Ariga The Big O manga artist (see inside front cover for more information). The Big O is finally starting to be released on video/DVD. Ariga: I‟d like people who weren‟t able to catch it on TV to take this opportunity to check it out Sato: Even people who dismissed it by just saying “I don‟t have cable.” [The Big O was originally shown in Japan on the Wowow cable channel—Ed.] But I guess that‟s how it is. When you can‟t see it, it‟s sour grapes. Ariga: I was hoping that the manga would help to get people interested. I‟m hoping it‟ll get people to buy the DVDs and videos, so it‟s an important piece of media in that respect. I know that I shouldn‟t stray too far. Sato: Well, we‟re going to keep needing your help. (laughs) Ariga: I‟ll do my best. (laughs) Katayama: Well, I‟d like people to enjoy the world of The Big O by both reading the manga and watching the anime.

  • To Film Sound Maps: the Evolution of Live Tone’S Creative Alliance with Bong Joon-Ho
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Repository@Nottingham From ‘Screenwriting for Sound’ to Film Sound Maps: The Evolution of Live Tone’s Creative Alliance with Bong Joon-ho Nikki J. Y. Lee and Julian Stringer Abstract: In his article ‘Screenwriting for Sound’, Randy Thom makes a persuasive case that sound designers should be involved in film production ‘as early as the screenplay…early participation of sound can make a big difference’. Drawing on a critically neglected yet internationally significant example of a creative alliance between a director and post- production team, this article demonstrates that early participation happens in innovative ways in today’s globally competitive South Korean film industry. This key argument is presented through close analysis of the ongoing collaboration between Live Tone - the leading audio postproduction studio in South Korea – and internationally acclaimed director Bong Joon-ho, who has worked with the company on all six of his feature films to date. Their creative alliance has recently ventured into new and ambitious territory as audio studio and director have risen to the challenge of designing the sound for the two biggest films in Korean movie history, Snowpiercer and Okja. Both of these large-scale multi-language movies were planned at the screenplay stage via coordinated use of Live Tone’s singular development of ‘film sound maps’. It is this close and efficient interaction between audio company and client that has helped Bong and Live Tone bring to maturity their plans for the two films’ highly challenging soundscapes.

  • 2. Case Study: Anime Music Videos
    2. CASE STUDY: ANIME MUSIC VIDEOS Dana Milstein When on 1 August 1981 at 12:01 a.m. the Buggles’ ‘Video Killed the Radio Star’ aired as MTV’s first music video, its lyrics parodied the very media pre- senting it: ‘We can’t rewind, we’ve gone too far, . put the blame on VTR.’ Influenced by J. G. Ballard’s 1960 short story ‘The Sound Sweep’, Trevor Horn’s song voiced anxiety over the dystopian, artificial world developing as a result of modern technology. Ballard’s story described a world in which natu- rally audible sound, particularly song, is considered to be noise pollution; a sound sweep removes this acoustic noise on a daily basis while radios broad- cast a silent, rescored version of music using a richer, ultrasonic orchestra that subconsciously produces positive feelings in its listeners. Ballard was particu- larly criticising technology’s attempt to manipulate the human voice, by con- tending that the voice as a natural musical instrument can only be generated by ‘non-mechanical means which the neruophonic engineer could never hope, or bother, to duplicate’ (Ballard 2006: 150). Similarly, Horn professed anxiety over a world in which VTRs (video tape recorders) replace real-time radio music with simulacra of those performances. VTRs allowed networks to replay shows, to cater to different time zones, and to rerecord over material. Indeed, the first VTR broadcast occurred on 25 October 1956, when a recording of guest singer Dorothy Collins made the previous night was broadcast ‘live’ on the Jonathan Winters Show. The business of keeping audiences hooked 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, promoted the concept of quantity over quality: yes- terday’s information was irrelevant and could be permanently erased after serving its money-making purpose.
