___________________________________________________________________ KING, Stephen Junior PRG 627 Item List __________________________________________________________________ King, Stephen junior, 1841-1915, surveyor, member of John McDouall Stuart’s expedition 1861-63, Litchfield's party to Adelaide, Reynolds and Finnis Rivers 1865, survey of Port Darwin 1868 and Overland Telegraph Line survey and construction party 1870-72. Married 1877 Louisa Barnes 1856-1951. John William Billiatt was Stephen King's cousin born in Lincolnshire in 1842. He arrived in S.A. in 1861 and joined Stuart's Exploration expedition. In 1863 he married King's sister Ann Elizabeth and they returned to England. In 1872 the Billiatts went to Paraguay with a group of British emigrants but the venture was a failure. In 1873 he brought his family to SA and opened a private educational establishment, the Lancing School at Glenelg, which he conducted until their return to England in 1889. They went to live at 'Calta Wurlie', Ottery St Mary in Devon; later he lived near Exeter. J.W. Billiatt died in Devon on 16 April 1919. Items 1 - 52 in this list were described by Mr K.T. Borrow in the King-Stuart collection supplement to the Royal Geographical Society centenary exhibition catalogue. (See PRG 627 item 309.) The cataloguing was continued by K.T. Borrow to item 106 and completed by Amanda Hogg, as a university field work student project upon donation of papers by Miss Shirley Cameron Wilson in 1994. Items 338-482 are from a later donation after the death of Miss Cameron Wilson in 2003, transferred by the executors of her estate. They contain more Stephen King and J.W. Billiatt material and that of later generations of the King family. Miss Shirley Cameron Wilson prepared a manuscript about J.W. Billiatt which was edited and published in 2007 by her executors. It is entitled Billiatt: John William Billiatt: explorer, adventurer and tutor. ___________________________________________________________________ 1.
