THE PROSPECTS FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2016 - 2017 FORWARD FROM THE CHAIRMAN MISSION AND THEMES Next year in December we will be celebrating the twentieth anniversary of the Foundation – although The PROSPECTS Foundation is Hyndburn’s community owned environmental charity and we are PROSPECTS as a whole has already passed that milestone. This means we are approaching the time to something of a unique and wonderful organisation. We were established in 1998 by local people and reflect on what we have all achieved together. But there is no time to sit back on our laurels - this year have lots of skills and environmental knowledge which we use and pass on when delivering projects we look forward to continuing the good work. around the Borough. We support a network of PROSPECTS Panels as well as schools and community groups to help them develop their own ideas to improve the environment. In the tumultuous and “interesting” political year we have just seen, the environment, as ever, has been pushed to the back seat. While President Trump rows back on US commitments to combatting climate We focus our work on 6 Themes of Sustainability, which means that our actions are not harmful to change our own Government has signalled its policy of reliance on fossil fuels by consenting fracking the environment, they take account of both local and global issues and positively contribute to the in Lancashire. Globally environmental indicators are not good – habitat loss, species extinction rates, reduction of climate change. Our 6 Themes are: ocean plastic, city air quality, loss of polar ice - you could get discouraged! BIODIVERSITY One interesting reflection though is that experience shows that giving up, just sitting back and expecting protecting and enhancing local wildlife and plant life “them” to come up with solutions is not going to get us very far.

Aatif Nawaz: The Last Laugh The Newsroom (Laughing Horse) 3 - 27 August @ 11:15pm 'A man with big ambitions - this is brave, important comedy’ Three Weeks Images Footage 2017 marks ten years in comedy for Aatif Nawaz. In that time, he has tackled obstacle after obstacle in a highly competitive and cut-throat in- dustry. He has experienced highs and lows: hilarious interactions with Channel 4; chance meetings with comedy legends (including advice from Jimmy Carr and Omid Djalili) dalliances with the BBC, and harsh, harsh rejections from...well...a lot of people. In his quest for comedy stardom, few stones have been left unturned and - after a long, hard graft - it’s finally time for Aatif to have The Last Laugh. 'Excels in his light-hearted, yet damning critiques of the way the world twists and stretches the truth' Fringe Guru Aatif Nawaz is an award winning stand-up comedian and presenter. Annual Report 2016 SUPER SLOW WAY_ ANNUAL REPORT 2016 2016 has been an extraordinary year for Super Slow Way. WE HAVE SUPPORTED AND DEVELOPED 30 PROJECTS WITH OVER 200 ARTISTS 20 ARTS ORGANISATIONS AND OVER 40,000 ATTENDANCES Bringing great art to the banks of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal Connecting people with artists, each other and their waterway SUPER SLOW WAY: SPARKING A CREATIVE REVOLUTION IN PENNINE LANCASHIRE. Cover image: Shapes of Water, Sounds of Hope. Photo by Graham Kay This image: Kinara. Photo by Matthew Savage superslowway.org.uk 3 INTRODUCTION IN 2016 SUPER SLOW WAY WENT FROM BEING AN IDEA, LOADED WITH POSSIBILITY AND PROMISE, TO AN EXPLOSION OF ACTIVITY. WE SUPPORTED AND DEVELOPED 30 PROJECTS, IN WHICH WE CONNECTED OVER 200 ARTISTS WITH COMMUNITIES IN THE FORM OF COMMISSIONS AND ARTIST RESIDENCIES, MASS PARTICIPATION PROJECTS AND THREE MAJOR FESTIVALS. IT WAS A VERY BUSY YEAR INDEED. Throughout the year we celebrated the Bicentenary of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal – the UK’s longest waterway and the artery that powered the heart of the Industrial Revolution: the mill towns of Pennine Lancashire. Our bold programme has nurtured the beginnings of a creative revolution along its banks, as the post-industrial landscape is transformed and repurposed for social and civic activity. We have watched people come together through art and seen communities begin to think about their self- representation and self-determination, whether through mass participation projects such as Shapes of Water, Sounds of Hope in Brierfield and the thunderous triumph ofSuper Slow Way: A Rhapsody to the Leeds & Liverpool Canal; or in smaller, gentler, but equally profound, projects such as Stephen Turner’s Exbury Egg in Burnley, idle women’s floating arts centre, andBeyond Labels with the young men of Hollins Technology College, among many others.
