Wilkinson: Configurations of the Indic States System 63 CONFIGURATIONS OF THE INDIC STATES SYSTEM David Wilkinson In his essay "De systematibus civitatum," Martin Wight sought to clari- fy Pufendorfs concept of states-systems, and in doing so "to formulate some of the questions or propositions which a comparative study of states-systems would examine." (1977:22) "States system" is variously defined, with variation especially as to the degrees of common purpose, unity of action, and mutually recognized legitima- cy thought to be properly entailed by that concept. As cited by Wight (1977:21-23), Heeren's concept is federal, Pufendorfs confederal, Wight's own one rather of mutuality of recognized legitimate independence. Montague Bernard's minimal definition—"a group of states having relations more or less permanent with one another"—begs no questions, and is adopted in this article. Wight's essay poses a rich menu of questions for the comparative study of states systems. -

This study focused on five major ethnic groups (Gujars, Jadoons, Syeds, Tanolis, and Yousafzais) of Buner and Swabi Districts, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, Pakistan, through investigations of variations in morphological traits of the permanent tooth crown, and by molecular anthropology based on mitochondrial and Y-chromosome DNA analyses. The frequencies of seven dental traits, of the Arizona State University Dental Anthropology System (ASUDAS) were scored as 17 tooth- trait combinations for each sample, encompassing a total sample size of 688 individuals. These data were compared to data collected in an identical fashion among samples of prehistoric inhabitants of the Indus Valley, southern Central Asia, and west-central peninsular India, as well as to samples of living members of ethnic groups from Abbottabad, Chitral, Haripur, and Mansehra Districts, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and to samples of living members of ethnic groups residing in Gilgit-Baltistan. AVICENNA (Abu 'Ali Al- Husayn Ibn 'Abd Allah Ibn Al-Hasan Ibn 'Ali Ibn
AVICENNA (Abu ‘Ali al- Husayn ibn ’Abd Allah ibn al-Hasan ibn ‘Ali ibn Sina)—a renowned philosopher and medical doctor, b. 980 in Afshan near Bukhara, d. 1037 in Hamadan. Avicenna come from a family with Iranian roots. The Banu Sina family must have have been faithful subjects of the Samanid dynasty (ninth and tenth century), known for their concern for culture and good economic practices. Certainly for this reason, Avicenna’s father was name ruler of Jormitan and moved to Bukhara. Although Avicenna says that this took place during the reign of Emir Nuh III ibn Mansura (976–997), the text of his autobiography does not agree with these dates. Avicenna’s father must have moved to Bukhara during the reign of Nuh II ibn Nasra (943–954). According to Avicenna, his father was an Isma’ilite. As a young man, Avicenna was already remarkable for his intelligence. He was sure of himself, although for a long time he remained in the shadow of his teacher of philosophy, Abu ‘Abd Allah Nateli. He studied Islamic law under Abu Muhammad Isma‘il ibn al- Husayna al-Zahida (d. 1012), who taught him the mazhab hanafi (hanafic law). His masters in medicine were Abu Mansur al-Hasan ibn Nuh al- Qumri and Abu Sahl ‘Isa ibn Yahya al- Masihi. It was his medical knowledge that first brought him renown when the physicans of the court of Nuh III ibn Mansura called him to seek his advice because the emir was ill. Since his advice proved effective, the emir as a sign of gratitude gave him access to the right royal library. -

The discovery of an undisturbed hoard of no less than 13,500 coins in Kooch Bihar, inhumed some five centuries since, recently claimed attention both from the number and importance of its representative specimens, which so effect ively illustrated the history of the kingdom of Bengal for a consecutive period of some 107 years. 1 The earliest date thus accorded towards the purely Initial Coinage of the country under its newly-installed Muslim administrators did not reach higher than the reign of the Empress Riziah, a.h. 634 637 (a.d. 1236-1239), or more than 34 years after the first entry of the adventurous Khilji and Tiirki troops into the recognized Hindu capital of the lower Ganges. 2 A stillmore recent discovery of a comparatively poor man's cache, in the fort,of Bihar,3 elucidates an earlier chapter of the local annals ; and though the contents of the earthen vessel in this case are limited innumber to a total of 37 pieces, and restricted in their dates to a term of 13 years, they, in some respects, compete advantageously with the previously- recovered unexampled store, in the value of their contributions 1Journ. -

Pursuing PhD from Himalayan University, Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh. Abstract: Mahmud Ghazni (998-1030 A.D) also known as Mahmud Zabuli was one of the greatest rulers of the eleventh Century. He became the first independent ruler of the Ghaznavid Dynasty. After coming into power, he carried as many as 17 raids in India. He defeated many Rajas in the eleventh century. His am was not to rule over other territories by dilating his empire but he was interested in pillaging everything from the people of India. He was a brave and courageous man who tried to establish Muslim rule in India but he failed somehow to establish the Muslim rule in India. It is said that Mahmud Zabuli had destroyed many temples in India and had assumed different titles at different times. This article helps us to reconstruct the early history of Mahmud Ghazni and it also provides us the information about his early carrier, expeditions and accession of Mahmud Ghazni. The Socioeconomics of State Formation in Medieval Afghanistan George Fiske Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2012 © 2012 George Fiske All rights reserved ABSTRACT The Socioeconomics of State Formation in Medieval Afghanistan George Fiske This study examines the socioeconomics of state formation in medieval Afghanistan in historical and historiographic terms. It outlines the thousand year history of Ghaznavid historiography by treating primary and secondary sources as a continuum of perspectives, demonstrating the persistent problems of dynastic and political thinking across periods and cultures. It conceptualizes the geography of Ghaznavid origins by framing their rise within specific landscapes and histories of state formation, favoring time over space as much as possible and reintegrating their experience with the general histories of Iran, Central Asia, and India. Once the grand narrative is illustrated, the scope narrows to the dual process of monetization and urbanization in Samanid territory in order to approach Ghaznavid obstacles to state formation. The socioeconomic narrative then shifts to political and military specifics to demythologize the rise of the Ghaznavids in terms of the framing contexts described in the previous chapters. Finally, the study specifies the exact combination of culture and history which the Ghaznavids exemplified to show their particular and universal character and suggest future paths for research. Gulam Hussain, Lecturer in History Department of History, Osmania College (A), Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh ABSTRACT: Medieval period is an important period in the history of India because of the developments in the field of art and languages, culture and religion. In the early medieval age India was on the threshold of phenomenal changes in the domains of polity, economy, society and culture. The impact of these changes is visible even today influencing the growth of India as one nation. Early Medieval period witnessed wars among regional kingdoms from north and south India where as late medieval period saw the number of Muslim invasions by Mughals, Afghans and Turks. The impact of Islam on Indian culture has been inestimable. It permanently influenced the development of all areas of human endeavour- language, dress, cuisine, all the art forms, architecture and urban design, and social customs and values. 77 THEME The Central Islamic 4 Lands AS we enter the twenty-first century, there are over 1 billion Muslims living in all parts of the world. They are citizens of different nations, speak different languages, and dress differently. The processes by which they became Muslims were varied, and so were the circumstances in which they went their separate ways. Yet, the Islamic community has its roots in a more unified past which unfolded roughly 1,400 years ago in the Arabian peninsula. In this chapter we are going to read about the rise of Islam and its expansion over a vast territory extending from Egypt to Afghanistan, the core area of Islamic civilisation from 600 to 1200. In these centuries, Islamic society exhibited multiple political and cultural patterns. The term Islamic is used here not only in its purely religious sense but also for the overall society and culture historically associated with Islam. In this society not everything that was happening originated directly from religion, but it took place in a society where Muslims and their faith were recognised as socially dominant. Non-Muslims always formed an integral, if subordinate, part of this society as did Jews in Christendom. Our understanding of the history of the central Islamic lands between 600 and 1200 is based on chronicles or tawarikh (which narrate events in order of time) and semi-historical works, such as biographies (sira), records of the sayings and doings of the Prophet (hadith) and commentaries on the Quran (tafsir). The material from which these works were produced was a large collection of eyewitness reports (akhbar) transmitted over a period of time either orally or on paper. -

Pharmacist and Sufi poet from Nishapur, who combined mysticism with the magic of the story- teller’s art. His Conference of the Birds is an allegory in which the birds of the world take wing in search of Truth, only to find it within themselves. Yusuf BALASAGUNI (Yusuf of Balasagun). Author in 1069 of the Wisdom of Royal Glory, a guide for rulers and an essay on ethics. Written in a Turkic dialect, Yusuf’s volume for the first time brought a Turkic language into the mainstream of Mediterranean civilization and thought. -
