Hans Werner HENZE (1926-2012) Violin Concerto No. 2† Il Vitalino raddoppiato* Peter Sheppard Skærved, Violin*† and Conductor* Omar Ebrahim, Speaker† • Longbow* Parnassus Ensemble † • Hans Werner Henze†

Henze’s Violin Concerto No. 2 occupies a space between the theatre and concert stages. A dramatic work with a rôle for a speaker, it comes from the period of his interest in ‘action music’ and is scored for a large experimental chamber orchestra. Equally Janus-faced, but very different, is the Italianate Il Vitalino raddoppiato, vividly coloured and overtly romantic ‘chamber music’ that looks back to the example of Tomaso Vitali. The Concerto is heard in an archive performance conducted by the composer, and this volume concludes Peter Sheppard Skærved’s survey of Henze’s works for violin and orchestra (the First and Third Concertos are on 8.557738).

Key Features • This disc concludes the collaboration on disc of violinist Peter Sheppard Skærved and composer Hans Werner Henze that began on 8.557738. Vytautas Bacevičius remained virtually unknown as a composer during his lifetime, in contrast to the fortunes of his sister Grażyna Bacewicz, who retained her Polish nationality. Rendered stateless by the outbreak of World War II while he was on tour as a concert pianist in Argentina, he eventually settled in New York until his death in 1970, giving acclaimed piano recitals, teaching, and writing astoundingly original orchestral scores. He never lost his deep allegiance to and nostalgia for Lithuania. This recording gives an eloquent introduction to his pianistic virtuosity and to his mystical, Scriabinesque vision of the orchestra.

†WORLD PREMIÈRE RECORDING

Havergal Brian’s extraordinary late creativity is almost unparalleled in musical history. Between the completion of Symphony No. 6 in 1948 and the end of his compositional life two decades later he wrote 26 symphonies. No. 6 marks a crucial point in his adoption of more concise forms and economy of expression in its single-movement span, a process taken even further in the brief but free polyphonic fantasia of No. 31. In Symphonies Nos. 28 and 29 Brian turned to the classical four-movement model but one which is wholly and idiosyncratically re-imagined. The intensity and even savagery of No. 28 is balanced by No. 29, Brian’s most lyrical late work.

Key Features • Naxos continues its exploration of the sequence of symphonies by English composer Havergal Brian with four more examples. The earliest is the Sixth, written when he was 72, but Nos. 28, 29 and 31 are late works, full of his characteristic qualities of individuality and powerful gestures. One of his most intermittently savage symphonies, No.28, is balanced by his most lyrical late work in the genre, No.29. This is the third and final volume of the string quartets of the important but long- neglected Basque composer Andres Isasi. Although he was initially influenced by Grieg and Dvořak, Isasi studied under Humperdinck in Berlin, where he acquired a love of Germanic culture, reflected in both theQuartets heard on this recording. A prodigious talent as a performer, George Enescu was dubbed “the greatest musical phenomenon since Mozart” by Pablo Casals. His compositions occupy a special place among the vast repertoire of works for violin and piano. British music for the clarinet was hugely indebted to the elite interpreters who inspired this important repertoire. They included Frederick Thurston, who first performed three of the works on this recording. Bax’s Sonata, much admired and imbued with Celtic folklore, is heard in a version that restores the manuscript’s original phrasing. The pieces by Roger Fiske and Iain Hamilton are heard in première recordings, while Richard Rodney Bennett’s Duo Concertante was commissioned by the eminent soloist in this recital, Nicholas Cox.

Key Features • The British clarinet tradition is a long and important one. Franz LISZT (1811-1886) Schubert Song Transcriptions Winterreise (Winter Journey) • Schwanengesang (Swansong) Avan Yu, Piano

Liszt had a particular affection for the music of Schubert whom he considered to be “the most poetic musician who ever lived”. Ordered according to key relationships rather than the narrative content of the verse, his transcriptions of Schubert’s two great song cycles, Winterreise and Schwanengesang are outstanding examples of the genre and formed a popular part of his concert programmes during his years as a travelling virtuoso. First published in 1720, the ‘eight great suites’ contain some of Handel’s most beautiful music and were immensely popular in their time. These final four suites illuminate not only his melodic gifts and dramatic flair, but his ability to unify a variety of forms and styles into a complete and magnificent whole. The first of this two volume set, acclaimed by Fanfare magazine for ‘its often assured and inspired playing’, is available on Naxos 8.572197.

Key Features • Our first volume in this two disc set (8.572197) was released in 2010, hitting the U.S. Classical Billboard Charts within its first week. Collectors will find it has been worth the wait for this second and concluding CD, the first having been admired by The Juilliard Journal Online for Philip Edward Fisher’s “exacting rhythmic control and clear articulation… impressive control…

© Christian Steiner [bringing] out the composer’s ability to suddenly touch the heart… Philip Edward Fisher deploying a gentle, yearning quality that is irresistible.” These works have become increasingly popular in recent years, and this set can stand tall amongst any of the catalog alternatives. 8.573397 Playing Time 59:25 Companion Titles 7 47313 33397 4

Music for Brass Septet, Vol. 2 Septura 7 47313 33867 2 Jean-Philippe RAMEAU (1683-1764) Suite from Dardanus John BLOW (1649-1708) Venus and Adonis: A Mournful Masque Henry PURCELL (1659-1695) The Curious Impertinent (1685-1759) Suite from Rinaldo This second volume of Septura’s brass chamber music series takes us back to the 17th century and the music of Baroque opera, in four contrasting works by Rameau, Blow, Purcell and Handel. The astounding variety in content, colour and character of the originals demands especially inventive arrangements, and these pieces are vividly brought to life by incorporating stylistic elements from ‘period performance’. The exhilarating result is a stunningly virtuosic set of new Baroque works for brass. Volume 1 is available on Naxos 8.573314. Key Features • Volume 1 (8.573314) of this series of exciting new Brass Chamber Music was described by The Observer as a “stirring, thoughtful debut CD”, and the prospect of entirely new works for brass ensemble by the likes of Mendelssohn and Brahms has turned this release into a popular choice amongst specialists and the wider public. This second volume meets the © Bethany Clarke same superlative standards as the first and makes strong inroads into the ever popular Baroque period of music. Each of Septura’s members is a leading player from the new generation of British brass musicians, holding principal positions in the London 8.573386 Playing Time: Symphony, Philharmonia, Royal Philharmonic, BBC Symphony, City of Symphony, 70:50 Scottish Opera and Aurora orchestras.

The Social Contract By Jean-Jacques Rousseau Unabridged Read by Neville Jason 9 781843 799023

Man is born free, and everywhere he is in chains.

In The Social Contract, Rousseau explores the concept of freedom and the political structures that may enable people to acquire it. He argues that the sovereign power of a state lies not in any one ruler, but in the will of the general population. Rousseau argues that the ideal state would be a direct democracy where executive decision-making is carried out by citizens who meet in assembly, as they would in the ancient city-state of Athens.

The thoughts contained in the work were instrumental to the advent of the American Revolution and became sacred to those leading the French Revolution.

With traces of Aristotle and echoes of Plato’s Republic, The Social Contract is an exhilarating look at society and the definition of democracy.

Lord Jim By Joseph Conrad Unabridged Read by Ric Jerrom 9 781843 798842

Jim, the first mate aboard a small steamer named the Patna, travels from port to port in the Pacific Ocean. When the ship hits floating wreckage, Jim and the crew are forced to abandon it, leaving hundreds of ethnic travellers on board. However, Jim’s reprehensible actions are soon discovered by the Court and he is compelled to face his guilt and redeem himself − a journey that leads him to a remote exotic location where he is revered as the Lord, ‘Tuan Jim’.

Through beautifully evocative descriptions and ponderous philosophical prose, Conrad delivers a powerful novel about one man’s struggle to reconcile who he would like to be with who he actually is.

Joseph Andrews By Henry Fielding Unabridged Read by John Telfer 9 781843 798941

In one of the first novels in the English language, we follow the picaresque adventures of Joseph Andrews, a virtuous young man who is keen to maintain his innocence, despite being coerced into bed by nearly every woman he encounters.

The episodic journey sees him head home to London with his tutor, Parson Adams, with the aim of finding his sweetheart, Fanny. Much mayhem ensues along the way as they become embroiled in a series of escapades and slapstick brawls.

Fielding is an expert satirist and through the many twists and turns of narration, he combines high and low literature with high and low humour to create a wittily funny novel that he aptly named a ‘comic epic poem in prose’.
