King, Jr., as Acting Secretary of Education October 2, 2015 The President. Please be seated, everybody. Good afternoon. Arne Duncan is one of my longest serving Cabinet Secretaries, and he's been a friend for a lot longer than that. So it's with some regret and sorrow that I've accepted his decision to return to our hometown of Chicago. After more than 6 years of living in Washington, Arne's wonderful wife Karen and their excellent kids Claire and Ryan—who are also buddies of mine—wanted to move back home. And that's meant in the interim a lot of time apart. So I'll be honest: I pushed Arne to stay. Sorry, guys. But I also know from personal experience how hard it is to be away from your family on a sustained basis. So while I will miss Arne deeply, he's more than earned the right to return home. Take a look at what Arne has accomplished over the last 6½ years. He's one of the longest serving Secretaries of Education in our history and one of the more consequential. In just a few years, Arne and his team have delivered some incredible results at every stage of the educational experience. More than 30 States have upped their investment in early childhood education. Nearly every State in America has raised standards for teaching and learning and expectations for what our kids can learn, and our high school graduation rate is at an alltime high. -

Kindle Edition, 2015 © The New Yorker COMMENT SEARCH AND RESCUE BY PHILIP GOUREVITCH On the evening of May 22, 1988, a hundred and ten Vietnamese men, women, and children huddled aboard a leaky forty-five-foot junk bound for Malaysia. For the price of an ounce of gold each—the traffickers’ fee for orchestrating the escape—they became boat people, joining the million or so others who had taken their chances on the South China Sea to flee Vietnam after the Communist takeover. No one knows how many of them died, but estimates rose as high as one in three. The group on the junk were told that their voyage would take four or five days, but on the third day the engine quit working. For the next two weeks, they drifted, while dozens of ships passed them by. They ran out of food and potable water, and some of them died. Then an American warship appeared, the U.S.S. Dubuque, under the command of Captain Alexander Balian, who stopped to inspect the boat and to give its occupants tinned meat, water, and a map. The rations didn’t last long. The nearest land was the Philippines, more than two hundred miles away, and it took eighteen days to get there. By then, only fifty-two of the boat people were left alive to tell how they had made it—by eating their dead shipmates. It was an extraordinary story, and it had an extraordinary consequence: Captain Balian, a much decorated Vietnam War veteran, was relieved of his command and court- martialled, for failing to offer adequate assistance to the passengers. -

I am the Deloitte Professor of Enterprise Risk Management and Professor of Accounting in the Poole College of Management at North Carolina State University which is based in Raleigh, North Carolina. It is a pleasure to welcome our audience here at the Jack Morton Auditorium on the campus of The George Washington University in Washington D.C. as well as those who are joining us live via the internet through the SEC Historical Society’s virtual museum at www.sechistorical.org. It is a pleasure to welcome you all here today. Ten years ago today, President George Bush signed into law The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 after it was approved by the House with a vote of 423 to 3 and by the Senate with a vote of 99 to 0. At the time in 2002, we were on the heels of the corporate scandals at Enron, WorldCom and others that followed, Adelphia and Tyco and beyond, as well as the dotcom crisis. We were also dealing with the impact of 9/11 as well. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act was designed to enhance and strengthen corporate governance, particularly over the financial reporting processes in public companies in the United States. As you know, the act had a number of provisions primarily to enhance corporate governance, to place more responsibilities and authority on the shoulders of boards of directors, particularly audit committees, as well as to strengthen the accountabilities for management of public companies, the auditors of the financial statements, and to try to enhance the strength of internal controls, financial reporting and particularly to increase transparency over the financial reporting and disclosure process. -

In the first episode, Vice President Selina Meyer keeps asking her secretary whether the president has called. He hasn’t. Historically, vice presidents have been understudies, have often been disliked or even despised by the president they served, and have been used by political parties, derided by journalists, and ridiculed by the public. The job of vice president has been so peripheral that VPs themselves have even made fun of the office. That’s because from the beginning of the nineteenth century until the last decade of the twentieth century, most vice presidents were chosen to “balance” the ticket. The balance in question could be geographic—a northern presidential candidate like John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts picked a southerner like Lyndon B. -
