A New Inquiry by the Science & Innovation Committee
Committee Secretary Standing Committee on Science and Innovation House of Representatives Parliament House CANBERRA ACT 2600 Email [email protected] Dear Committee-members, I am pleased to provide the response of the Australian Geoscience Council to the Inquiry by the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Science and Innovation into Australian technological innovation and pathways to commercialisation. The Australian Geoscience Council is the Peak Council of geoscientists in Australia. It represents nine major Australian geoscientific societies and has a membership of over 7000 professionals. We believe that the geosciences are critical for Australia, as shown by the accompanying sample of innovative technology case studies in the geosciences. Our submission is made in four parts: • This cover letter and a one page Executive Summary containing the Geoscience Council’s eight recommendations, • Eleven pages responding to the eight Terms of Reference for the Inquiry and developing the rationale behind the Geoscience Council’s recommendations, • Twenty one appendices (pages 14 to 46), each providing a summary case study of technological innovation in the geosciences, • Appendix 22 (page 47) which describes a relevant activity from another country. The resource industry in Australia is characterised by sustained innovation, and the sector continues to create new wealth for Australia with long lead times. Resources (including gold) achieved more of Australia’s export earnings in 2004 than any other sector, while also delivering employment and other flow-on benefits to the community in both urban and remote regions. However, these achievements derive from successful exploration of decades past. In order to project past performance into the future, Australia needs greater innovation in technologies, concepts and knowledge, as well as sustained levels of qualified people. -

Roommate groups have to be made through the housing software, eRez life. eRez software will automatically place the roommate groups together. It is very important that if you have a specific person/people you are wanting to live with, all parties get on and create the roommate group. There may be an insufficient number of empty rooms, so there maybe a time where the roommate group can't be fulfilled. What if I want to change my room assignment or roommate? We do not allow any room changes to occur the first two weeks of the term. After the first two weeks, students will receive an email with instructions on how to request a room change. There will be a $50.00 room change fee applied. -

BRIAN REDDAWAY William Brian Reddaway 1913–2002 I PROFESSOR W. B. R EDDAWAY, invariably known to friends and colleagues as Brian Reddaway, was an exceptional economist who had a huge influ- ence on how economics in Cambridge has been taught and researched. He held leadership positions in the Faculty of Economics and Politics at Cambridge for twenty-five years, between 1955 and 1980. For nearly the first fifteen years he was Director of the Department of Applied Economics (DAE), succeeding Sir Richard Stone, the founding Director. The DAE was established after the Second World War on the initiative of J. M. Keynes. It was set up as the research arm of the Faculty of Economics and Politics, providing facilities for teaching staff to carry out applied economic and social investigations. In 1969, almost at the end of his tenure as DAE Director, Reddaway was elected to succeed James Meade in the Chair of Political Economy, the senior chair in economics in Cambridge. Reddaway held this chair until 1980, when he formally retired. He continued his association with the Faculty for many years after this, doing occasional lecture courses, or one-off lectures: he posi- tively loved lecturing on applied economic subjects and helping younger colleagues with their research. As is the custom in Cambridge’s collegiate university structure, in addi- tion to his successive university posts in the Faculty, which began in 1939 on his appointment as University Lecturer, he held a Fellowship at Clare College for sixty-four years (1938 to 2002). He took a very active part in college life, including college teaching and helping to manage the college’s Proceedings of the British Academy, 138, 285–306. -

The universities of Oxford and Cambridge had developed different attitudes towards the award of honorary degrees through the early and middle decades of the twentieth century. Recently, both have adopted a similar cautious and apolitical stance. This essay describes the role of honorary degrees in the production and reproduction of their cultural and intellectual authority of these two ancient universities. INTRODUCTION This paper offers the first systematic analysis of the politics of hon- orary degree conferment in Britain, drawing on the experiences of Oxford and Cambridge universities.1 As medieval foundations with collegiate structures, Oxford and Cambridge stand apart from the other English universities, most of which received university status in the twentieth century.2 The term ÔOxbridge’, coined in 1849 by William Thackeray, perfectly encapsulates the mystique of these institutions. Their aura of Ôeffortless superiority’, artfully cultivated in countless novels and films, has been sustained by an intense riv- alry that permeates laboratory and library alike. Oxford and Cam- bridge have reputations for world-class research and teaching, an excellence regularly affirmed in Ôleague tables’ that purport to mea- sure university performance.
