OLD TESTAMENT BIBLICAL LITERACY Lesson 48 Minor Prophets – Part Two HOSEA and MICAH I. HOSEA Who was Hosea? Little is known about Hosea’s life. What we know is gleaned from the reading of the book of his prophesies that bears his name. Hosea is unique among the Old Testament prophets who have prophecies written (the “literary prophets”) in that he was actually born in the Northern Kingdom. Other literary prophets spoke of and to the Northern Kingdom, but those prophets were actually from Judah (for example, Amos from last week). Some scholars believe that Hosea was a baker by trade, basing their opinion on Hosea 7:4ff. In that passage, sinners are noted to be “burning like an oven whose fire the baker need not stir from the kneading of the dough till it rises.” To extrapolate Hosea’s occupation from that passage is risky. It seems equally likely that Hosea would be a farmer because of his repeated analogies to agriculture. One piece of personal information we know more certainly is that Hosea was married to a woman named Gomer. That fact becomes a core part of the message of Hosea. Background and Message Hosea itself records that the prophet was called and active during the reign of Jereboam II in the Northern Kingdom. That puts the prophecies in much the same context as Amos from last week. This time in the Northern Kingdom was marked by prosperity. The rich were getting richer, but the poor were getting poorer. There was little to no social justice in the country. -

God’s final word on the subject, followed by Hosea’s response. • Hosea condemns Israel’s celebration of their harvest festival as unfaithfulness to the Lord and is denounced. 1. Gathering around threshing floors were features of harvest festivals and occasions for communal worship. Threshing floors were also the site of sexual overtures (Ruth 3). 2. Mourner’s bread – associated with the dead, and is considered unclean. 3. Festival of the Lord = the harvest festival of tabernacles or Sukkoth. 4. The site of Memphis, Egypt (originally Hiku-Ptah), had been the capital of the Old Kingdom. By Hosea’s time it had become a cultural and religious center, but was famous for its ancient tombs. 5. “Sentinel” is often used to refer to prophets. -
Theme and Genre in 4Q177 and Its Scriptural Selections
THEME AND GENRE IN 4Q177 AND ITS SCRIPTURAL SELECTIONS Mark Laughlin and Shani Tzoref Jerusalem 4Q1771 has conventionally been classified as a “thematic pesher,”2 or, more recently as “thematic commentary,”3 or “eschatological midrash.”4 It is one of a group of Qumranic compositions in which the author cites and interprets biblical texts, applying them to the contemporary experience of his community, which he understands to be living in the eschatological era. Unlike the continuous pesharim, thematic pesha- rim are not structured as sequential commentaries on a particular 1 John M. Hosea 13-Jonah 4: September 7: Hosea 13-14 1. Who is responsible for Israel’s destruction, according to 13:9? Who alone can provide the solution? How does this proclaim the gospel to us today? 2. Compare Hosea 14:1-3 with Hosea 6:1-3. One passage expresses genuine repentance, while the other expresses false repentance (compare verse 4 of each to see God’s response). How are the two “repentences” different? Have you genuinely repented? Introduction to Joel: Author/Date: Very little is known about the author of this book. Joel’s name means “the Lord is God” and he seems to be among the earliest of the writing prophets. Joel 1:13 and 2:17 indicate that the temple was still established, while the enemies mentioned (3:2) suggest an earlier date as well. The MacArthur Study Bible suggests that the book was composed during the reign of Joash (835-796 BC), though this is not certain. Themes: The main message of the book of Joel is “the day of the LORD.” In the Bible, “the day of the LORD” refers not to a single day, but rather to a broader timeframe of judgment. Sometimes, it refers to more immediate judgments experienced by Israel and Judah. Other times, it refers to something more remote. For example, I Thessalonians 5:2 speaks of the day of the Lord as a time of future, eschatological judgment, what might be called the Great Tribulation. Likewise, Revelation 16:14 refers to it as a future global judgment. At the heart of the book is a call to God’s people to repent (2:12-17). -

Hosea an Inspiring Quote the Book of Hosea Who Wrote This Book?
Hosea The prophet Hosea in the 8th century BCE protested violently against Israelite religious practices. An inspiring quote “For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings” (Hosea 6:6). The Book of Hosea Hosea came from the north and preached at the same time as Amos. He discovered the tenderness of God through personal experience. He loved his wife, although she behaved badly towards him; through his love he succeeded in restoring to her the feelings she had had when she was young. This is how God loves us: not because we are good, but so that we can become good (Hosea 1-3). The book begins with God’s command to Hosea to marry an unfaithful wife who he loved passionately and the first few chapters describe what happened when he did so. Chapter 4 onwards contains a range of messages from God via Hosea, first to the people of Israel (chapters 4-11) and then to the people of Israel and Judah (chapters 11-14), about the anger God felt because of their betrayal of him through injustice, corruption and their worship of other gods. Woven between these messages of doom are some messages of hope, pointing to what God’s people can look forward to beyond the times of trouble. Who wrote this book? The author is announced as Hosea in verses 1:1-2. He was a prophet to the Northern Kingdom of Israel. Hosea, in Hebrew, means salvation but Hosea is popularly termed “the prophet of doom”. -

GOD IS CONQUERING YOUR HEART HOSEA 5:1-15 Memory Verse: Psalm 51:17 – “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.” Icebreaker: Who knows you better than anyone else in the world? How has this person been able to help you in a way that no one else could? 1. In Hosea 4, God accused Israel of not truly knowing him. Now in Hosea 5, He tells them that He knows them. What does it mean that God knows Israel? In what way is it terrifying to the nation of Israel that God knows them in this way? How often do you consider the fact that God knows you so intimately? How does this reality affect you? Digging Deeper: The doctrine of omniscience teaches us that God not only knows everything about us—He knows everything that happens and will happen in all His creation. Read Psalm 139:1-6 and Proverbs 5:21. How do these passages give you a deeper understanding of God’s omniscience? 2. In Hosea 5:6, God tells Israel that though they seek Him to make offerings, He has withdrawn from them. Why would God withdraw from His people when they want to sacrifice to Him? Why is God’s absence from His people so terrible? Would God withdraw from Christians today? Digging Deeper: In a January sermon titled “Show Us Your Glory”, we learned the importance of God’s presence to His people. How does Israel’s situation in Exodus 33:12-23 compare to the situation in Hosea 5? How could Israel in the days of Hosea be encouraged by considering the way Moses petitioned God? 3. -

Lesson 1 Hosea: God’s Persistent Love July 4, 2021 Background Scripture Hosea 1, 4, 6 Lesson Passage: Hosea 1:2-10; 4:1-6; 6:4-11 (HCSB) Introduction: Hosea, whose name means salvation, or deliverance, was a contemporary of Amos. Hosea was a young preacher in the nation of Israel, the northern kingdom, and he was a contemporary of the prophets Isaiah and Amos. He lived, as we are told in the first verse, during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah (kings of Judah, the Southern Kingdom), and during the reign of Jeroboam. Jeroboam was one of the wicked kings of Israel and the nation was going through a difficult time when Hosea was preaching. Hosea has the distinction as being the last prophet God sent to that nation. The peoples’ conduct was nothing close to that demanded by God. They were guilty of swearing, breaking faith, murder, stealing, committing adultery, deceit, lying, drunkenness, dishonesty in business, and other crimes equally abominable before Jehovah (4:1-2, 11; 6:8-9; 10:4; 13:1-2). The priests were also involved in violence and bloodshed (6:9). The picture painted in the Book of Hosea is truly that of a nation in decay. God was completely left out of the peoples’ thinking. The prophet’s task was to turn the thinking of the people back to God, but they were too deeply steeped in their idolatry to heed his warning. They had passed the point of no return and they refused to hear. The key to Hosea’s prophecy is the parallel of Hosea’s personal life to that of God’s relationship with Israel.
