He knew all about life. He lost his mother when he was three; he was sent to the city; he was robbed of his inheritance; his house burnt down; and in the space of a few years he lost three children and his wife. He wrote in another poem that everything he had loved ‘pricked like a bramble.’ The world does this. It confronts. It challenges. It hurts. It is sometimes blesses us, too. But how to respond? Issa came to the same conclusion as many other great artists over the centuries: through art. Art is what defines us as humans. There is no other species that indulges in self-expression in the same way we do. We paint, we act, we write, we sing. Of all these art forms there is none as clean and precise and exacting as poetry. It is distilled language and feeling. It is a painting in works, a snapshot of a moment, or a chronicle covering years.     HORACE SILVER COMPLETE VOL. 1: The 50s Horace Silver Complete Volume One: The 50s Editor: Jay Glacy This book contains lead sheets to all the tunes written and recorded by jazz pianist and bandleader Horace Silver, as sideman or leader, during the 1950s. These lead sheets document indelible performances of tunes many of which, over fifty years, have become jazz standards. There are no chord substitutions or melody alterations included, only the most accurate documentation of the original performances. In some instances the editor has included ancillary musical elements (like bass lines or harmony parts) to give a fuller snapshot of the music; these are notated using cue notes. Contemporary styles can be divided into five overlapping categories: (1) "mainstream," the post- "bebop" style and soul jazz; (2)jazz influenced by other ethnic music; (3) the avant-garde jazz, which is often nationalistic and of social importance;(4) "thirdstream," a combination of jazz, with European classical concert styles; and (5) the new, diversified liturgical music. Aside from lyrics, there are musical signals that are of communicational importance to blacks because of special uses of rhythm, melody, inflection, scale patterns, harmony, and improvisation. Black music has been largely influenced by two durable styles that possess tested communicative powers. One is the antiphonal (call and response) song, issuing directly from African traditions. The other is the blues, the 'foundation of much popular black music and an embodiment of those elements which characterize black culture and the life style of . blacks.     Quintessence 2020 What’s in a Game? (COVER) Annalise Schuck, ’22 From childhood, gamesINTRODUCTION have been how we learn about the world around us. When we play chess, we practice thinking ahead and strategizing; we’re forced to look at the board through our opponent’s eyes as well as our own. In playing pretend, we envision futures for ourselves as doctors, princesses, firefighters, and parents. The uninhibited imagination of youth can take us to Disney World, the Eiffel Tower, or Middle Earth without ever leaving the safety of our backyards. And when we play cards, we find that sometimes no amount of clever logic or creative thinking can change the hand we’ve been dealt. Games emblemize life: the fun and the tedious, the individual and the cooperative, the triumphs and the defeats. For our 2020 edition of Quintessence, we ask the question “What’s in a game?” in celebration of all that games have taught us and continue to teach us. Thinking logically is not always as simple as adding A and B; more often than not, we have to think outside the box to come to the right solution. Riddles teach us not only to think in unexpected ways, but that sometimes there can be more than one satisfying answer to a question. A sharp mind is perhaps the most powerful tool one can have—so don’t underestimate the strength of a tough riddle! The lure of chance is always present throughout life, especially when a decision is just out of control. There is no greater usage of this than in a game.
