Bill Stapleton) Anastasia Maksiuta Lazy Bird Adam Landa John Marcellino Jacob Lapidus Luke Murphy Gabe Contino ABOUT THE DIRECTOR At home in both classical and jazz idioms, Interim Director of Jazz Studies, TIM POWELL is an active and established freelance musician in the Baltimore/ Washington Metropolitan areas. He has performed with the Baltimore, Alexandria, and Altoona Symphony Orchestras as well as Frank Sinatra Jr., Gloria Gayner, Ben Folds, The Four Freshman, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Frankie Avalon, Ben E. King, Mauro Marcondes, Origem, the Mike Kamuf Little Big Band and the Steve Fidyk Big Band. Tim Powell received his Bachelor of Science in music education from Penn State University, a Master of Music in jazz studies and a Doctor of Musical Arts in saxophone performance from the University of Maryland, College Park. The focus of his doctoral studies included electro-acoustic music for saxophone, as well as contemporary saxophone sonatas. He has commissioned and premiered several works for the saxophone. Powell is currently on faculty at Rowan University and the University of Maryland.     HORACE SILVER COMPLETE VOL. 1: The 50s Horace Silver Complete Volume One: The 50s Editor: Jay Glacy This book contains lead sheets to all the tunes written and recorded by jazz pianist and bandleader Horace Silver, as sideman or leader, during the 1950s. These lead sheets document indelible performances of tunes many of which, over fifty years, have become jazz standards. There are no chord substitutions or melody alterations included, only the most accurate documentation of the original performances. In some instances the editor has included ancillary musical elements (like bass lines or harmony parts) to give a fuller snapshot of the music; these are notated using cue notes. Contemporary styles can be divided into five overlapping categories: (1) "mainstream," the post- "bebop" style and soul jazz; (2)jazz influenced by other ethnic music; (3) the avant-garde jazz, which is often nationalistic and of social importance;(4) "thirdstream," a combination of jazz, with European classical concert styles; and (5) the new, diversified liturgical music. Aside from lyrics, there are musical signals that are of communicational importance to blacks because of special uses of rhythm, melody, inflection, scale patterns, harmony, and improvisation. Black music has been largely influenced by two durable styles that possess tested communicative powers. One is the antiphonal (call and response) song, issuing directly from African traditions. The other is the blues, the 'foundation of much popular black music and an embodiment of those elements which characterize black culture and the life style of . blacks. Women have participated in numerous ways, and in a variety of complex cultural contexts, throughout the history of jazz in New Orleans. While we do see traces of women’s participation in extant New Orleans jazz histories, we seldom see women presented as central to jazz culture. Therefore, they tend to appear to occupy minor or supporting roles, if they appear at all. This Research Study uses a feminist perspective to increase our knowledge of women and gender in New Orleans jazz history, roughly between 1880 and 1980, with an emphasis on the earlier years. Feb. 3, 1992 Introduction: Oslo Jazz Circle in the old days was very interested in the exciting art of the famous Horace Silver, and thus we also became familiar with Junior Cook. Unfortunately they never visited our backward country although they came pretty close. For me personally though, I solved the problem by visiting New York! History: Played alto saxophone while he was in high school but soon took up the tenor instrument instead. Played with Dizzy Gillespie in early 1958 and joined the Horace Silver Quintet in May; also in that year he recorded with Kenny Burrell. After leaving Silver in 1964 he played until 1969 with Blue Mitchell, who had also been one of Silver’s sidedmen, and recorded with Barry Harris (1967) and organists John Patton and John Patterson (both 1968). Taught at the Berklee College of Music before working with Freddie Hubbard (1973-75). Played in a quintet with with Louis Hayes (from 1975) (ref.
