  • Biography Boss Ac
BOSSAC BIOGRAPHY BOSS AC Inheriting a passion for music from his mother Ana Firmino, one of the greatest Cape Verdean talents, Boss AC soon revealed his rare talent. His first appearance on record, “Rapública”, was released back in 1994. It featured on a compilation which brought exposure to some of the most prominent underground Portuguese rappers such as Black Company, Zona Dread and Líderes da Nova Mensagem. He is one of the few artists from that era who still go on releasing nationally successful rap hits. His debut album, “Mandachuva”, from 1998 was recorded in the United States and produced by Troy Hightower, one of the most requested Hip-Hop producers in the US. Early on AC demonstrated his strong open minded vision, foretelling the maverick route he would follow. During the following years he embarked on several career paths – he produced and promoted shows, released records, composed music for TV programs (“Masterplan” and “Último Beijo”) and films (“Zona J” and “Lena”), and still found time to participate in works of some of the greatest national music artists, such as Xutos & Pontapés and Santos e Pecadores, among others. His second album of originals “Rimar Contra a Maré” – fully recorded, produced and mixed by the author himself – was an exploration of Portuguese- African music, fusing its traditional roots with the modern sounds of the street. It was also perhaps a more autobiographical and introspective record, revealing the artist’s wiser mindset. Success was slowly but inexorably on its way. The success of “Rimar Contra a Maré” crossed continents; a result of which was the nomination of the music video “Dinero”, at the African Video Awards, in the category “Best Special Effects”, by the well known South-African “Channel0”, a sort of African MTV.

  • Ana Moura a Fado with World There Is No Other Fado Voice Like Ana Moura's. a Voice That Traipses Freely Through Tradition
Ana Moura A fado with world There is no other fado voice like Ana Moura’s. A voice that traipses freely through tradition, but that also takes time to flirt elegantly with pop music, to broaden the scope of this Lisbon song form in a highly personal way. But what really sets her apart is not just the deep and sensual timbre that few others can produce, it is her adroitness at instantly transforming into fado any melody she lends her voice to. There is practically no fuse on this emotional explosion, fired unhesitatingly at the listener’s heart. Fausto, José Afonso, Ruy Mingas, Angolan music and fado. These were the favourites at the Moura family’s musical soirées, in Coruche. Ana Moura was just a slip of a girl - she was born in Santarém, also in the Ribatejo district, in 1979 – with a love of singing. Her parents sang, all her mother’s family sang, and any family get together would always end with music and song. Although she would sing anything, Ana soon began to feel that, for some reason, she had a special fondness for fado. At the age of six, she sang her first fado, “Cavalo Ruço” (Dapple Horse), and she would also often hear her mother crooning “O Xaile de Minha Mãe” (My Mother’s Shawl). Then came adolescence and she put fado to one side for a while. She got into other types of music, more befitting her age and her school friendships. In a full-blown adolescence of discoveries and rebellions, and also highly curious about other musical forms, the 14-year old Ana Moura arrived in Carcavelos to start the 10th year at school.

  • Celebrating Forty Years of Films Worth Talking About for Sale
2 FEB 18 1 MAR 18 1 | 2 FEB 18 - 1 MAR 18 88 LOTHIAN ROAD | FILMHOUSECinema.COM CELEBRATING FORTY YEARS OF FILMS WORTH TALKING ABOUT FOR SALE. 2001 Ford Fiesta. As new. One careless owner. Avid readers of this column will remember a few months back I spoke about the folly that was the Autosafe Car Park – a ‘state-of-the-art’ car park behind our offices that, in theory at least, parked your car for you, but which went bust before it had even opened or worked properly – and how we had half expected to see cars still in it as it was being dismantled to make way for a new office block. At the time it seemed to be empty, but the last of the outer panels were recently removed to reveal two cars that simply must have been in there since the thing closed back in 2001! Ha! I can’t help wondering who owned the cars, and did Autosafe have to buy them new ones? And how did they get their shopping home that day? If anyone out there knows, I’d love to know... As promised last month, our February programme is dominated by awards-hopeful films, some of which have already won big at those events that have already taken place. Three Billboards… (the big winner at the Golden Globes last night) continues and we’ll be screening Steven Spielberg’s The Post, accompanied by a short season of films paying tribute to the crusading journalist. PT Anderson’s stunning Phantom Thread (featuring the last ever film appearance of triple Oscar® winner Daniel Day-Lewis) gets its highly anticipated release, as does Andrei (Leviathan) Zvyagintsev’s astonishingly good (though undoubtedly bleak) Loveless, including a preview with director Q&A on Sunday 4 February.
